Since 2009 we've been chasing talk of a Black Series version of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, and today, we have photographic proof of its development. Last month, our own Marty Padgett confirmed with Tobias Moers, AMG's head of vehicle development, that the SLS AMG Black Series is a "must do" car for the brand. The stars are aligning.

Of course, turning up the wick on the SLS AMG to Black Series levels won't be easy; it's already a 563-horsepower supercar with more performance than any two average humans can access. The Black Series will be simply mental.

To get more out of the SLS, it's likely AMG will start with lightening the car through extensive use of carbon fiber, including body panels and interior elements. More power is also likely, perhaps as much as 650 horsepower, though how Mercedes will get it is not yet clear. Tuning the current 6.2-liter V-8 up is one possibility, as is dropping in a hot version of the new 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-8. We think the former is the more probable path.

A sharper suspension setup, larger wheels and tires, and possibly more driver-controllable elements of the car's setup are also among the potential upgrades.

As for the body, the spy photos reveal a wider front and rear track thanks to flared fenders, a very aggressive front bumper, more pronounced side skirts, and a sleek, tame rear end.

We don't know yet exactly when the SLS AMG Black Series will enter production, but we will likely have to wait until sometime in 2013 for the official unveiling.

Holy shyte........here it comes........only question is what engine. New 5.5 turbo V8 or 6.2 V8 tuned even higher? Paris debut next year with the S-Class would be nice.

Mercedes should market AMG as its own brand now. A full-line AMG brochure should be used and a seperate section in the biggest dealerships around the world, just for AMG cars. I thought they were already doing something like this??? SLS Roadster, SLS BS, C63 BS and the usual AMG cars, I would love to be in charge of that marketing department.

The Black Series epidemic has claimed the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG as its latest victim. Our spy photographers recently managed to catch a few photos of the SLS AMG Black Series out for a little testing on the Nürburgring.

What will the vehicle bring to the table when the production version arrives? The whispers kicking around the web indicate that buyers will enjoy around 650 horsepower wrapped in a package that's lighter than the standard car. The extra power and reduced weight should get the Black Series to 60 miles per hour in around three seconds flat.

No one knows for certain, but we feel confident in guessing that the machine will also embrace a host of suspension and brake modifications for an even higher performance threshold. Don't think that all of those toys will come cheap, however. Chances are the model will cost over $500,000.

600 PS doesn´t seem too much. It should have the same output than the SL BS.

Love it!!!! Somehow, this makes the SLS the car it was supposed to be from the very beginning. 650 sounds like a very nice number from the 6.2L V8. But, considering how MB hates meeting fans' expectations, 608 or so seems more realistic. I remember the SL Black was rumored to pump 720, which AMG engineers confirmed as doable, but came to market with 670. Anyway, the SLS does not need as much power as the SL to get blistering performance. The SLS, in its regular guise, already smokes the SL Black. The two models are in different leagues.

And, there is literally no chance for the SLS to get the new twin-turbo. That just isn't how MB does things, changing engines mid-stream for bespoke motors. It is like the SLR was slated to get the v8 kompressor, but the advent of the new new AMG v12, the market thought the SLR would get it, and never did. The twin-turbo would not fit the SLS character as well as the 6.2L.

AMG makes some of the best muscle cars in the world right now. Argue the definition of that all you want, but they make big cars with big power and huge torque. The trouble is, they tend to err on the side of comfort in their burnout machines. After all, these are for Mercedes-Benz buyers.

Lately, though, Mercedes has realized that there are buyers who want huge power, but also want sharp handling and a less comfortable (more sporty) ride. And that's where the Black Series line of AMGs comes in. They had the CLK63 AMG Black Series, the SL65 AMG Black Series and just recently, the C63 AMG Black Series Coupe.

Now Mercedes-Benz is adding another badder, blacker car to the lineup: The SLS AMG Black Series. The SLS AMG is already stupid-fast, but it could be sharper, louder, more responsive and, well, faster. And that appears to be what we have here. Bigger tires (the SLS already comes with 265/35ZR19 front and 295/30ZR20 rear), bigger scoops, and a more aggressive body kit set this one apart from the run of the mill SLS. Surprisingly, the exhaust remains the same, this is an early prototype, however, and that's likely to change. The 6.2-liter V8 is likely to get a power bump from 563 to somewhere right around 600.

Damn, that looks good. The SLS is so already a classic and it ain't even close to touching on "old" yet.

A helluva way for ex Design Chief Pfeiffer to go out (it was his passion project apparently), and leave the new guys with something to try and keep up with.

I understand this is just a prototype, but I can't see this design coming out very well with the exaggerated wheel flares. Way to screw up an otherwise attractive design.

This car better be good..it's the gonna face some serious competition when the F458 Scuderia comes out.

The projected price of the SLS Black Series is beginning to worry me. Why would anyone pay more for a Mercedes (admittedly a top of the line model) when they can get a 458 Italia or McLaren 12C for less.....................

I love the proportions of the SLS now, the fender flares make the normally excessive length palatable. In conjunction with the shorter front and rear overhangs, the SLS comes as an altogether attractive silhouette, especially compared to the SL.
