4 Series (F32) [Spyshots] 2014 BMW 4 Series Spy Pics & Info

The first generation of the BMW 4 Series consists of the F32 (coupé version), F33 (convertible version) and F36 (five-door liftback version, marketed as 'Gran Coupé') compact executive cars. The 4 Series was created when BMW spun off the 2-door models (coupé and convertible) of the 3 Series into a separate series. Production: July 2013 – September 2020
In short: I don't care about the numbering - just launch the car already! I can't wait!

With the introduction of even numbers in the regular passenger car range BMW is afforded greater scope for model differentiation and clearer competitor identification against rival models; e.g. 4er vs. A5; 3er vs A4. It also creates better nomenclature uniformity e.g. 5er vs 6er and clearer distinction between 3er and 4er Gran Coupé for example.

It's time now.

Many of the old traditions have been busted anyway - so what's in a number?

+1.

E90 sedan on streets in UK 2005, E92 coupe on UK streets 2007.

Make sense that if F30 sedan is on streets Feb 2012 that coupe could be late 2013/early 2014?

Doesn't the spy shots make the coupe look huge/long? Kind of like old 6er? Rear wheel way back past rear quarter light.

It was only a matter of time before it ended up being scooped , you would have seen it earlier if the scoop photographers actually spent their earnings on night vision goggles and went out after dark.

Just to prevent the unnecessary comments - The car is a prototype it is in full camouflage and no it will not get circular taillights and singular double headlamps. And yes this is the new 4er.

I think that's too soon. These are the first spyshots ever, so it won't hit the market before Spring 2013 at the earliest, more likely even Fall 2013.

But Scott says the prototypes have been driving around for some time, AND, I would guess a lot of the development work has been carried out with the F30, so maybe it won't be as slow to make production.

It's all about that new automotive reality show called Plug That Niche [Before your Competitor does].

And by differentiating the coupe from the sedan, BMW can get away with charging a bigger premium for very little extra costs.

The E90 was launched in March 2005, and the coupe in the summer 2006. Normally the coupe is just over a year after the saloon. Even if the coupe is launched 18 months after the F30, it would still mean a launch of March 2013. I would be amazed if it's as long as 2014 until the Coupe is on UK streets.

Hasn't Scott just confirmed it with his statement?

Scott says a lot of things, and has a history of deliberately misleading people. It's his job. I would take anything he says about THE FUTURE with a huge pinch of salt.

What I think is so obvious that has to happen is that:

The previous M3 sedan sales were not as good as expected, I have heard or read, no longer will make the next generation version of the M3 sedan.

On the other hand would be extremely foolish not to use the name M3 in the coupe it is an icon, for which I'm sure there will be an M3 coupe (if bmw make the sedan, as well as M3).
GC will be the only - M4
opinions or statements of insiders??

^There will be a M3 sedan - there are tons of spy pics unless they are all part of some massive and expensive plan to mislead us. Have no idea if the coupe will be called M3 or M4. I hope it is sticks with M3 for historical reason, but as long as there is A M3 - sedan or coupe - I couldn't really care.

Sure, but it's usually two years from first spyshots to production. Was the same for the E92 which shared a lot of parts with the E90 btw.

The E92 was launched in September 2006, a year and a half after the E90. The F30 will be available in February, add 18 months and we're talking about Fall 2013.

Agreed, there will be an M3 sedan and it might be the only M3.

Some drop little hints or branches to let you know something is afoot.

Interview with Ian Robertson for UK Publication.

There have been rumors that the new Coupe and Cabrio will be carrying a 4-series badge. What does this mean for the M3?
"The M3 is enormously important to us" I cannot confirm the rumours, but whatever the badges on the bootlid, there will be an M3 Model.

Note- Whatever the badges. and There will be an M3 model instead of model(s).

^Cool, but it brings me to my next rant - it would suck if they deliberately made the M3 less powerful/sporty than a M4 coupe in order to justify a higher price tag for the M4 like we keep hearing they will do with M5 and M6 (I still hope that won't be the case).

Well we know the new M5 is a hell of a performer, but we also know that it is still an executive sedan first and foremost. I'm guessing the reason why the M5 wasn't developed to the potential that the M6 will be is because of the requirement that the M5 be a civilized daily drive (one of the key complaints about the E60 M5). With the M6 I imagine they won't have to worry about that issue, ...which might explain the message we've been hearing of the M6 being even more performance-orientated than its 4-door sibling.

Whether they do the same for the M3 sedan.... ?? ...

It's not the number as in "3" that's important but the letter before it as in "M". Audi and Mercedes aren't thought of as a model, it's the breed of "RS" and "AMG" that people look for.

All you need worry about is that it carries the "M" badge, it's that letter that tells you it's special.
