Ohhh. I am REALLY not a fan of the CC and I don't get the admiration for it at all, particularly post FL in which they ripped out whatever unique character/appeal the car had.

THE CLA's wheelbase to length ratio seems promising. It appears to be a very big car.

Mercedes Announces New 4MATIC System Tailored for FWD Models, Debuts on CLA
For many years, 4MATIC has been Mercedes-Benz’s designation for its all-wheel drive models, from the C- to the CL-Class and of course its ever-growing portfolio of SUVs.

Despite the common name, the German manufacturer offered no less than four different AWD systems, depending on the model and its customers’ needs – i.e., a G-Wagen has a different system than a CLS.

Now, Mercedes has announced details of a fifth 4MATIC system for the upcoming CLA compact sports saloon and its AMG-fettled performance version, the CLA 45 AMG, which it says, is “a completely new development tailored to the requirements of models with front-wheel drive”.

The new AWD system can be combined only with the 7G-DCT seven-speed dual clutch semi-auto transmission. A compact power take-off unit (PTU) that’s integrated in the transmission using the same lubrication system, resulting in less friction and a 25 percent weight saving over rival systems, provides power delivery to the rear axle.

Torque distribution is taken care by an electro-hydraulically activated multi-disk clutch integrated in the rear axle. Under normal driving conditions, the clutch is open and the car is almost 100 percent front-wheel drive for maximum fuel efficiency.

A rotor pump that’s also integrated in the rear-axle gear unit is automatically activated when an ESP-controlled valve detects minimal speed differences between the front and rear axles. In milliseconds, the system pressure builds up and activates the rear clutch, which shifts torque between the two axles according to grip (torque-on-demand).

The way torque is distributed depends on which of the transmission’s program is selected. For example, in ECO mode, less torque is transferred to the rear for better fuel economy, while in SPORT and MANUAL, activation times are quicker and more torque is directed to the rear for more sporting handling, while in the 350HP CLA 45 AMG, it adapts according to the settings of the three-stage ESP.

Ah, yes, the CLA (C117) is an A-Class based Coupe with four doors, which may be similar to a 2er Gran Coupe. Production started and it will be introduced officially in Detroit at the NAIAS in January 2013. A CLA Shooting Brake (X117) follows in 2014.

From 122 to 211 hp - New CLA to launch with four different engine variants

In four weeks the CLA will celebrate its world premiere at the North American International Auto Show 2013 in Detroit / USA. At the start of the new compact coupe, four engine options are planned - other variants follow in the fall of 2013.

At first three petrol engines debut in the new 4.6-meter-long C117 series: the CLA 180 BlueEFFICIENCY with 122 hp (90 kW), the CLA 200 BlueEFFICIENCY with 156 hp (115 kW) and the CLA 250 BlueEFFICIENCY with 211 hp (155 kW). For diesel at the beginning there's only the CLA 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY with 170 hp (125 kW).

In September 2013 two further versions of the coupe follow, the CLA 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY with 136 hp (100 kW) and the all-wheel drive model CLA 250 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY with 211 hp (155 kW).

For maximum performance the top model CLA45 AMG 4MATIC will provide plenty of fun. Under the hood is an AMG-developed two-liter turbocharged petrol engine (M133) with 354 hp (260 kW) in combination with the standard enhanced 7G-DCT dual clutch transmission. The top model comes to market in the fall of 2013.

This engine range is still not the end of the story, as in 2014 three more diesel variants follow: the CLA 180 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY with 80 kW (109 hp) and two others with 4MATIC, the CLA 200 CDI 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY with 136 hp (100 kW), and the CLA 220 CDI 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY with 170 hp (125 kW).

The new CLA can be ordered starting on 14 January 2013 and celebrates its dealer showroom debut on 13 April 2013. The base price for the entry-level petrol engine should be around 28,000 euros, while the diesel (CLA 220 CDI) is to start from around 36,000 euros. The youngest member of Mercedes New Compact Car Generation (NCCG) will be built exclusively at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Kecskemét / Hungary.
