The car is a huge letdown so far. Imagine how sleek it would be without just that top character line or with none at all. The car is a mess from the first look at it. I hope to god the S doesn't have this stupid look.

I really had high hopes for this car as well, espicially after the pretty cool concept... if this is really it, it looks bad!
It`s obvious the designers had to "beef up" the inner components of the production version for strength and extra crash protection.

This makes the car look really goofy from profile view... the hood is too puffy. It looks like the head of a fish with the rest of the car. Compare this with the concept.

MB really needs to think about where they want to go with their designs.. some say the A class looks good but how? it just still look like a nose heavy van and its headlights looks like it got plaster over it (that strip of LED or something). With the side profile lines, you got to agree that MB did not have a "tradition" for side profile lines, it was there on the pretty old models but since models like W124 there has been none, so it's never an iconic thing. Obviously they saw Bangle having all the fun with BMW's flame surfacing and making use of its traditional side swage, and decided stupid random lines to apply on its cars. I am sure these stupid lines will make it onto the S class, they are obviously trying to create tradition. You notice that it's kinda opposite angle to BMW's body line, well BMW used to have it parallel with the car, but recently obviously it curves down towards the front, while MB's curve down towards the back. Quite clearly i think parallel is great, the car looks to be in motion all the time, while curving towards the front adds a bit of strength to it but curving towards the back is weird, they are doing it for the sake of having a line on the side.
And wow look at the rims, the one at the petrol station looks like some toy from transformers, the AMG package has these black rims as standard? are you sure? really need to so intentionally make it sporty by using black rims on a Mercedes Benz? We are not Honda Civic Type R here.

The front of this car (from what I see) is horrible, It gives me low expectations for the next C-Class and low expectations for MB design in general.

I told everybody, it will look NOTHING like the Concept! I see right through Wagener, he's a showoff and I wouldn't trust a word that he says (he said it would be 99% like the Concept). It's COMPLETELY different! The whole front, and the bottom character line which more elegantly disappears on the Concept after going a shorter, straighter distance, is now this childish, halfwitted bending-upward line that just jarringly jams to the end of the rear door..... not to mention, it's not even drawn straight. The whole car looks like it was drawn by crayons. Sheesh.

If it looks like that old rendering it will be fine. Very nice even.

There's so much kerfuffle on here about nothing but some poorly taken spy shots.

It looks 'nuggety' just like the current 1-er coupe. And rightly so, because you can't exactly create a graceful silhouette on such a short vehicle without ridiculously unusable back seats.

not so good for me...thought it will be better...looks like an older Subaru WRX for me..will buy a Passat CC - the old one..

I don't know why anyone is surprised. When I saw the gorgeous concept I knew that the production car would end up as a cartoonish over designed mini sedan. I applauded Mercedes for finally being a first mover in the small car segment rather than letting BMW take the lead but they need to stop with oversized headlights and grill.

It looks plain terrible in those spyshots! Ouch! Proportions are just off. But I'm sure the car will look great IRL - just like A-class does, apart from nose-heavy proportions with huge front overhang. Some other brands manage the FWD proportions better. I hope MB do better work next time. Eg. they can ask Renault for some help. ;)

Otherwise ... I'm not happy with current MB design language at all. It appears to vulgar to me. To flashy. Not elegant enough. Too toy-ish.

Eg. ODC showed some great lines: dynamic, modern, elegant ... but they opted for those more sculptured "relief" lines & surfaces which make MB cars a bit too extravagant for my taste & my comprehension of MB brand (image & values).

But I guess design change is necessary to revive the MB image (& sales) among younger customers. But will it work?

ODC reintroduced the 300d dropping line for newer Benzes, as Rob showed us? ;)

It could never be this extreme, they did mention somewhere else recently that they would reserve this kind of excessive body treatment for their cheaper/younger cars.

if this is the real deal...it is first time ever the normal version looks way better than AMG

That looks good too me. Again, I liked the accent lines on the concept much better. But this is nice. Of course the live shots are what concerns me.
