Cadillac CT5 [Spy Shots] The Forthcoming Cadillac CT5

The Cadillac CT5 is a mid-size luxury car manufactured and marketed by General Motors under the Cadillac brand since 2019. It is the replacement for the Cadillac CTS.
@John Galt ; you were telling us that the XT4 would be the next big thing... it ended up getting a cold response at debut (I was in attendance) and subsequently the “visionary” President Johan de Nysschen (btw a South African @martinbo) sacked before he really did anything substantive.

The XT4 is more of the same half-arsed GM luxury jobs that’s has plagued Cadillac since about 1997 starting with the ill-fated Catera (anyone remember that disaster?). I now expect more the same for this CT5, unless proven otherwise. I don’t think any Cadillac has really penetrated any non-US/Canada market.

The ATS was beating the 3 and C in sport sedan comparos, but it did not help the sales cause. It’s been another flop which will be discontinued.

I think Cadillac should stop trying to be European because they’ve been failing miserably at it. Go back to American roots that made it beloved by successful American immigrants and mobsters alike. Yeah, I know it’s not practical in modern society... it’s the enthusiast side of me talking.

Johan has left, but his shadow is still there :)

Cadillac Will Stick With Johan de Nysschen’s 10-Year Turnaround Plan

XT4 is a good car. And it will sell. Compare it to the Q3, Nx, GLA, X1.

Anyway, I've been always telling that JDN's real first car would be the CT5. He had some influence on the XT4, but it is not his car. What gives me confidence, except for the inside info, is the fact what he has done to the CT6. He has turned a dated and boring looking CT6 into a really good looking car. Of course, you can't change the whole car with just a facelift , but take a look.

Cadillacs will stay american. But there are some rules you have to stick with. Now you cant be a successful brand without going global. Also there are the segments , you can't make a "gangsta", old school, 5 meter yacht and put it the D-class.

We’ll see (a year from now), especially with you claiming the CT5 will dominate the 3... I’ll also be in attendance for it’s debut since NYC is home base.

It's GM guys, what do you expect? It's never going to be a world beating car overall. It may excel at handling but it won't "outclass" the BMW 3-Series. With GM product's it's always wait until next year or when XYZ happens. It never does and in the rare instance it does, it's year late.

Leaving politics aside. Have the previous entry-level Cadillacs been popular in Other markets out with the US?
Remember the rebodied Saab 9-3 the BLS? To capitalise on Europe it even came as a Kombi to chase the 3er and C-Klasse to no success.

The ATS wasn't popular in the U.S. either.

Hubris.

I think Ferrari sells more cars here.
And a Ferrari costs more than your average house.

Cadillac has nothing. You couldn't even buy one if you wanted, because there is no dealership network at all.

Indeed, I believe that many marques situated in the automotive stratosphere (and mesosphere) very significantly outsell the Cadillac brand here in Europe. Ferrari, Maserati, Bentley, Lamborghini, Aston-Martin... Cadillacs' impact in the EU can be likened to a mosquito dropping.

@John Galt

All rumors suggest Cadillac CT5 will replace both ATS and CTS. It will be close in size to CTS III and in price closer to ATS. So something like CTS II was.
CT6 gen II will compete against E class and BMW 5 but it will be bigger(something like a present one...it is not like it can go against S class or BMW 7 now).
Yes both CTS and ATS are praised for their platform and handling capability (Alpha) but in pretty much everything else they are behind the competition. The only sedan (if you read experience of owners on other forums) that came close (in NVH, quality etc) to Mercedes E class is CTS III. And it doesn't have such great sale. At the moment Genesis G80 has better sale than CTS in U.S.A.

So when you talk about outclassing competition...when you are talking about Cadillac you must be precise here because it will probably have better handling, but engines, NVH, quality of interior, room in cabin, reliability etc. might not be there (you never know). It is not all about handling you know. If it is better in one thing and lacks in all the other i wouldn't say that it outclass competition. IMO

I would like to know who and what decides that a Cadillac handles better than its comparable German counterpart. Motoring journalists? Lap times?

You are talking about the old ones. I Have never liked the ATS, CTS. I think they look dated and boring. They have never had a world class interior, poor attention to details etc. This one is gonna be different. Lets wait

I suspect that Cadillac will remain a victim of the "day too late, dollar too short" syndrome. A brand that appears to be seeking its' future by gazing into rearview mirrors and held captive in a perennial game of catch-up. The assumption that the spirit of the departed (in a corporate sense) Johan des Nysschen will guide Cadillac into the next decade is evidence. And yes, should the Car and Driver rendering posted earlier prove to be least remotely accurate, Cadillac will have created a handsome car. One that would surely gather many an approving nod and raise a few eyebrows. Were it 2014.

But looking towards MY 2020 and beyond, it will be the M-B EQ, BMW i Dynamics, Audi eTron, Porsche-developed J1/PPE, Geely/Volvo, JLR E-Pace inspired and KIA/Hyundai offerings (along with the remaining, heavily evolved PHEV and ICE models) that will be firmly planting their stakes in the soil of the coming decades' global automotive territory.

In the more confined parameters of the U.S. Great Plains...or rural Michigan, Wisconsin and Ohio, Cadillac should find its' fans I suppose. It can share the terrain with an abundance of surplus soybeans and other foodstuffs thanks to "TrumpTrade". An appropriate habitat methinks. Farm foreclosures may put the crimp on car financing though.*

*Obviously engaging that ol' sarcasm button.

I'll actually defend Cadillac right here. You really owe it to yourself to drive a CTS or ATS. GM is actually quite capable of tuning a car and I will assert that the ATS outhandled the F30 at launch. Even the British mags complimented the chassis tuning of the ATS model.

The rest of it? Hard pass.

I’d imagine in SA it’s very hard to just show up to a local Cadillac dealership and ask dor a test drive.

I'd assume martinbo is smart enough to know that my message meant "if the opportunity presents itself." When I travel outside of the U.S. I try to sample things not available here, perhaps he could do the same if time allows.

Cadillac

Cadillac Motor Car Division, or simply Cadillac, is the luxury vehicle division of the American automobile manufacturer General Motors (GM). Its major markets are the United States, Canada and China; Cadillac models are distributed in 34 additional markets worldwide. Historically, Cadillac automobiles were at the top of the luxury field within the United States, but have been outsold by European luxury brands including BMW and Mercedes since the 2000s.
