4 Series (F32) [Spy Shots] The BMW 4 series GranCoupe is spied cold-weather-testing in Sweden

The first generation of the BMW 4 Series consists of the F32 (coupé version), F33 (convertible version) and F36 (five-door liftback version, marketed as 'Gran Coupé') compact executive cars. The 4 Series was created when BMW spun off the 2-door models (coupé and convertible) of the 3 Series into a separate series. Production: July 2013 – September 2020
I think this has the potential to outsell the sedan. The 3er sedan is immensely popular amongst young guys, some of who probably want the 4-series coupe but badly need two doors. Let's just hope the car looks more like the 4 series than the 3er GT.

The article in BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe - Spy Photos says

"Design wise, the four-door 4 Series Gran Coupe features a longer rear window that flows into a conventional trunk, a design feature that visually increases the side dimension of the car. The stretched and dynamic design on the side gives the car a more premium look while offering more interior room for passengers."

That gave some hope that it is not a hatchback.

Hmmm...Melbourne Red please!

BTW, guys, why so much hate towards a 5th door in the U.S? What's the deal here? I don't get it..

@EnI BMW should have given the 4er GC a 5er GT style 5th door, that way the U.S people could ignore the hatchback part ;)

I see it is now open season on Americans.

It's actually the other way around. Americans hunting the rest of the world population. ;)

Usually the Americans proclaim anything that's not to US taste "stupid", "unattractive", "pointless" etc ... Forgetting the today's world is heavily globalized & that many products are not US-centric anymore. Some are also targeting Europe etc, while more & more of them are now tailored to suit the (East) Asians - especially to Chinese market.

If US market was the sole merit carmakers would only produce pickups, full size SUVs, large sedans, family vans, muscle cars & posh cabrios.

PS: I don't really understand what the problem with the liftback / 5th door is. If the car has an overall attractive shape, liftback should not be a problem. Look at Tesla S, Panamera, A7 - all liftbacks & selling well in US.

Totally agree with this. I doubt the fact that it's a hatch would bother anyone. When you make it ungainly like the 5 GT, that's when you have a problem :)

When you make it ungainly like the 5 GT, that's when you have a problem :)

The 5er GT suffer from "form follows function" principle: the pitch was to create a car with semi-commanding sitting position & extra headroom in the front YET make the roof & rear more coupeish (otherwise the car would end up being a minivan or a crossover in R-class style or a huge wagon on steroids). So, they give the car a hatch styling. Which ended up in a bit hefty look - high car, mighty rear. To make it more "sedan-like" they give the car "TwinDoor" feature: so you can open either the trunk lid part separately or together with a hatch door.

3er GT isn't as high. It also does not pretend to be a sedan - so no TwinDoor on board. Therefore the the rear can be lower - and the aerodynmics is supported by the pop-up wing which allows the rear end to be lower.Siting on a smaller platform than 5er GT, and also sitting lower gives the 3er GT much more dynamic & sportier and thus more appealing look.

4er GT is a low vehicle. Lower than sedan. And so even much lower than GT. So, no hefty appearance there. No massive rear. Despite the hatch door. The only visible hatchbackish feature - which also indicates 5th door - is the presence of the D-pillar & the 3rd side window. But the overall shape and appearance is VERY sexy & appealing, nothing like the other 5dr BMW large hatchbacks ala 3er GT, 5er GT, X6, X4. Regarding "TwinDoor" on the 4er GC. Perhaps ... ;)

Despite the fact that many premium and ultra luxury cars have it, they must still associate the feature with "cheap" small hatchbacks from Europe/Asia and thus undesirable in their premium cars? I honestly don't know.

Yes. This is exactly what I think. So do many people in the US, and in South America (where I am from). And worldwide to some extend as well, otherwise there would be hatchback versions of E/CLS, 5/6, and Jaguars, Lexus, Cadillacs, etc. in that class (A7 seems to be the exception, rather than the rule).

In the lower class, the situation is not as clear. There is a relatively sucessful A5 sportback (although Audi does not even try selling that in the US), and (reportedly) a sporty 5dr version of the next C-class. So I can understand that the 4 GC would match those. But I would still prefer it to be more like the 6 GC.

Personally, I was looking forward to the 4 GC. I find my 5 a bit too large and heavy, and the 3 a bit too common. I may still consider it for my next car (particularly if it has that more sedan-like "twin-door"), but I am less enthusiastic about it than if it were a real 4-dr coupe.

Really? Foreign cars, both European and Asian cars do better here than foreign (American or Asian) cars do in Europe. Yes, we might have our idiosyncrasies about some types of cars, but Americans have way more eclectic taste in cars than Europeans.

Asian cars are doing just fine over here. Just not in the 'luxury class" (3er and up). Lexus does not exist, and I can't even think of any other proper premium Asian brand/model.
American cars don't exist either over here. You're quite right! We're pretty damn racist over here regarding cars :D

Edit; I do actually see the Tesla Model S popping up more and more. And I have to say, it's a sight to behold!!!
