Macan [Spy Shots] Porsche Macan: Spyshots & Info

The Porsche Macan is a compact luxury crossover SUV (D-segment) produced by Porsche since 2014. It is the smaller SUV from Porsche below the Cayenne. The first-generation Macan went on production from February 2014 with petrol and diesel engine options. In 2024, Porsche released the second-generation Macan which is a battery electric vehicle built on the dedicated Premium Platform Electric (PPE) EV platform.
What difference does it make about which platform it is on if Porsche has completely changed everything about it? They've basically gutted the Q5 to make the Macan? Porsche moreso than any other company this side of Rolls Royce or Ferrari, doesn't have all arse do anything. This thing is going to blow the Audi away in every respect except price. Porsche's engineering is second to none and I think we'll all be surprised at how well this thing will turn out IMO.

However it remains a 2006 platform and even if the wheelbase is as long as the BMW competitor the front overhang is longer in Audi and the Porsche compared to the BMW.

Well we don't know yet if it's MLB, MLB evo or if the changes made to it make it fair to call it the same platform as the original MLB from 2006. Too many unknowns.
Also please note that for your statement to be true (with regard to the front overhang being longer in Q5 vs X3) I'm doubtful about that. I don't have the schematics, but if you have virtually the same wheelbase between the cars and the Q5 is slightly shorter overall than the X3, for that statement to be correct the trunk of the Q5 would have to be significantly shorter and thus you'd have either undoubtedly less boot space or far less rear legroom because the rear bench would be pushed more forward to accommodate the trunk, neither of which looks to be the case. In other words you have to take the "overhang" from somewhere and if they have the same wheelbase and the Q5 is slightly shorter then the only way to for the front overhang to be longer is for the rear to be shorter.

Eg.

Macan vs X4
L: 4699mm vs 4648mm (Macan is 51mm longer)
W: 1923mm vs 1915mm (Macan is 8mm wider)
H: 1624mm vs 1622mm (Macan is 2mm higher)
WB: 1807mm vs 2810mm (Macan's WB is 3mm shorter)

So, with practically the same WB dimension yet bigger overall length we can assume Macan's overhangs are slightly longer compared to the ones of X4. The height is almost identical on both vehicles, and the width is also almost the same.

What it gives the Macan (beside the visually massive front overhang due to pointy nose & lower hood) the FWD look is the hatchbackish rear - which seems similar to 3dr Audi A3 rear. But that said ... The Macan's proportions hardly differ from eg. 911 or Cayman. Actually, Cayenne & Panamera are more off when it comes to classic Porsche proportions than the Macan is.

The point was, the Q5 is actually shorter than the X3/X4. Yet the Macan is longer. The increased length could come at both ends, that is true, but it's almost certainly mostly in the back, which is almost never a bullet point in these discussion as it doesn't matter nearly as much.

I'm not sure it's the back. Macan has a very pointy nose tip, and to achieve that hood & bumper has to be a bit longer. But we are talking 2 inches here. Probably 1 at the front & one at the back, or so. It's purely a cosmetic / aesthetic issue. It's not that nose will be heavier due to an extra inch of plastic & the extra weight would effect handling in any way.

Porsche went public and announced that they had to re-engineer the q5 platform because it was not suitable for the Macan in terms of what they wanted to accomplish. The Audi CEO was furious.

I would agree with that statement after all the Q5 was design to compete directly with the X3 as a small SUV, the Macan on the other hand has to behave differently, it has to feel like a Porsche.

^No I don't think you do get the meaning. If you drive a Q5 you will know it feels nothing like a Porsche, the Q5 like the X3 have to appeal to a wider audience than the Macan so they less focused and more geared for comfort and performance.

^Was just listening to it and I instantly thought it sounded like the Audi S4 3.0TFSI which also sounded like a Porsche.

Wait, I was under the impression that the Macan uses the Q5 platform?
What all did they change? The wheelbase is the same.
But it would make sense that they did since the first driving impressions from the magazines are saying that it is by far the best driving (small) suv.

This is why I don't get what the uproar is about concerning Porsche using the Q5 platform. Porsche doesn't half-ass do anything. They gutted the thing. This will be a real Porsche down the lugnuts.
