Boxster/Cayman (987) [Spy Shots] Porsche Cayman GT3 / GT4 in the works

The Porsche 987 is the internal designation for the second generation Porsche Boxster sports car, built from 2004 to 2012. In 2005, it was joined in the range by the new Cayman fastback coupé (project 987c). Production: July 2004–2012 (Boxster), August 2005–2012 (Cayman). It was succeeded by the Porsche 981 in 2012.

I would think the 981 GTS will "only" have 350 PS, same power as Carrera. I doubt any wider rear quarter panels as 991 4/GT3.

here is what i'm hoping for:
-lighter than standard cayman by roughly 50-75lbs
-365 hp with 8500 rpm redline
-available in 6 speed manual
-keep the R nomenclature, GT3 doesn't sound right on a cayman
-reasonable pricing ( not keeping my hopes up on that one)

mmmm, that sounds finger-licking good. One thing I would add though, make sure that they have the same guys that worked on the 991 GT3's steering work on this delightful project.

Not sure where to put it. Porsche CEO interview, covers several topics. I like the guy, straight shooter. I mean, which CEO has the balls to criticize one of their own current designs. But then again he drives a GT3 RS 4.0!

Talks about possibility of GT3 special edition with manual. But even better possibility of Cayman GT4! And even admits Cayman is really better car than 911, so they have to neuter it!

If they do bring a GT3 version I'm sure it will steal some potential 911 customer but you already know Sunny there's nothing drives quite like a 911.

Cayman GTS right? or a GT3 version? I think we saw some slides showing the former is going on sale next year.

If the rumours are true we will see a Cayman GTS with 15hp more than a Cayman S. That small power bump is likely to be felt but I fear the price of the GTS will be far too close to a 911 to be considered good value.

I don't think the consideration is value, I think Porsche has two concerns. Will it sell and will it jeopardize the status of the 911.

Pushed until next year.

Can't be selfish, got to give some love to the Boxster as well ;)

Can anyone translate what it says about Cayman GT4 (in the red box)?

Cayman GT4: 'new six-cylinder biturbo boxer engine, due spring 2015'

I think Auto Bild - is that the magazine - have mixed up the caption and picture of the Cayman GTS/GT4. The green car above is probably meant to be the 400 PS GT4, and not the GTS, which has just been launched, with 340 PS.

^Thanks. I believe that scan is from an an issue 6-9 months old, so from before the GTS was launched.

Packaging of turbos and related ancillaries is going to be fascinating.

Anymore than it is on 911 turbos today? If It is indeed turbo, I think chances are it will be a 4 cylinder one.

Ja - I gave it a good thinking (and viewing of cutaway pics) over and whilst I'm not saying it's impossible there is a distinct packaging difference. The 911 with its engine out back, beyond the rear axle has somewhat more "free space" I feel.
The Cayman, with its mid-engined layout, does seem to have less space to work with. It's purely an impression of mine, however, and by no means a fact.

Could the 911 killer be from the same company that made the 911!?

Porsche’s mid-engine Cayman coupe has nipped at the heels of the 911 in terms of dynamics almost since the day it was created, and now that tiff may be about to break out into al all-out fistfight. A Motor Trend report suggests Porsche is working on a super-high-performance Cayman variant along the lines of the hard-core 911 GT3—and that it’ll likely be called GT4.

While a potential Cayman GT4 makes sense in a vacuum, in the context of Porsche’s current lineup, it’s a bold move. That’s because Porsche has been extremely careful to keep the Cayman’s output figures and performance just beneath those of the 911. We’ve said it before and we’ll said it again: The Cayman can handle much more gusto than it’s been given. And it appears the GT4 would finally tap that potential while breaking through the Porsche’s glass performance ceiling.

While it’s easy to surmise a GT4 would boast more power and higher handling limits than the already hot-to-trot Cayman S and recently revealed Cayman GTS, just how it will reach those metrics is a mystery. MT speculates the GT4 could use a turbo-four/hybrid setup inspired by the 919 race car’s powertrain, but that seems a bit far-fetched to us.

More likely is that the GT4 would retain flat-six-cylinder power, perhaps getting an uprated version of the 3.4-liter unit in the Cayman S, where it currently makes 325 horsepower. (That engine is also in the 350-hp base 911 Carrera, while the Cayman GTS gets a 340-hp version.) Of course, the 400-hp 3.8-liter six from the 911 Carrera S would be nice. Regardless, a potential Cayman GT4 should be an absolute hoot to drive, what with 350 horsepower (or more) onboard. It’s unknown exactly how soon we could see this mightiest of Caymans, although it could be as little as a year away.
