Boxster/Cayman (987) [Spy Shots] Porsche Cayman GT3 / GT4 in the works

The Porsche 987 is the internal designation for the second generation Porsche Boxster sports car, built from 2004 to 2012. In 2005, it was joined in the range by the new Cayman fastback coupé (project 987c). Production: July 2004–2012 (Boxster), August 2005–2012 (Cayman). It was succeeded by the Porsche 981 in 2012.

While the ex-generation Cayman was topped by the R model, the current incarnation of the mid-engined coupe is set to crown a future GT4 as its king. Nonetheless, the Cayman GT4 will have a deeper mission - to take on the 911.

As you well know, Porsche has always kept the Cayman in a bit of leash, making sure this doesn’t truly threaten the 911. With each new generation though, the Cayman gets closer and, like we said, the GT4 is set to raise the mid-engined bar once again.

Still, 911 fans shouldn’t fret - Porsche will continue to follow the Achilles and the tortoise paradox model, so the 911 will always remain ahead. For instance, by the time the GT4 hits the market, its rear-engined big brother will have already received its facelift.

Power-wise, the GT4 will go where no Cayman has gone before. The vehicle is expected to borrow the setup used in the current 911 Carrera S. 400 hp set free by a 3.8-liter flat six, to be more precise. For the record, the currentCayman S and GTS (340 hp) upper tier models share the 3.4-liter unit with the base 911 Carrera (350 hp).

Another route would be for the Cayman GT4 to feature the future confirmed turbocharged flat four engine. Porsche has stated this will go into the Cayman / Boxster, but the move could wait until the next generation of the models arrives. One way or another, you can check out the unofficial Porsche four-cylinder Boxer engine plan here.

Probably mirroring the 911 GT3’s setup, the Cayman GT4 will skip the manual, only being offered with a PDK. By the way, Porsche works drivers like to explain these cars are so fast that very few drivers would be able to extract the performance via a manual.

The Cayman GT4 won’t be mistaken for any other Cayman, since it will come with a fixed rear wing and a generous splitter up front.

Porsche should hit us with the Cayman GT4 early next year, but we’ll definitely be hearing more on the topic by then. The pricing will be just as niche as the car itself - a loaded Cayman GT could climb up to $125,000 (EUR 90,000).

And we haven’t even gotten to the part where Porsche test the Boxster echo of this...

Porsche Cayman GT4 prototype flaunts its rear wing in latest spy shots

Believed to have 450 HP
Our spies have sent us a fresh batch of photos with a more hardcore Porsche Cayman rumored to receive the "GT4" designation.

We know Porsche is working on a faceliftfor the Cayman but they are also cooking up a hotter derivative which will be slotted above the GTS version. While the latter packs a 340 HP punch from its six-cylinder 3.4-liter boxer engine, the GT4 edition is believed to come with a larger 3.8-liter twin-turbo rated at 450 HP (331 kW). This sounds a bit over-optimistic but be sure the GT4 will be significantly more powerful than the GTS while possibly weighing less.

Matching the added oomph will be a more aggressive body which will include a fixed rear wing as seen on the prototype spotted here which also has ceramic brakes and an additional front air intake. There are also talks of a track-only version which will be positioned below the 911 GT3 Cup but nothing is official at the moment.

The road-going Porsche Cayman GT4 (name not confirmed) will probably be unveiled next year together with a facelift for the lesser models.

Porsche accidently confirms the Cayman GT4

Porsche Cayman GT4 screen shot
The Porsche Cayman GT4 is one of the worst kept secrets in Germany and that trend continues as the company has accidently listed the model on their North American Driving Experiences website.

While the site doesn't reveal anything about the car itself, its listing helps confirm that Porsche is working on a new range-topping Cayman to slot above the Cayman GTS.

As we have previously reported, the model will feature an aggressive front bumper, a front lip spoiler and a prominent rear wing. The car will also have lightweight wheels and a high-performance braking system.

There's been a lot of speculation about what will power the model but the most likely candidate is a detuned version of the 3.8-liter flat-six engine that is used in the 911 S. Of course, there have also been rumors about everything from a plug-in hybrid powertrain to a twin-turbo 3.6-liter flat-six with approximately 450 PS (331 kW).

This could be heaven for everyone...

It totally will be. I have seen a few Cayman GTSs there past month - and some with a fixed rear wing. They were total head turners - more so than a 991 Turbo.

A 450hp output sounds unlikely though. At most, I expect the car to have a 10hp advantage over the GTS.

@Centurion

10hp over the GTS would be useless. I can't believe Porsche would develop this car and then seriously underpower it. Since this version has apparently been given a green light, 400hp seems like a minimum.

On a second thought the brake discs are massive and much larger than the ones on the GTS so it could well have more than 400hp. If it does then the Cayman will finally be good enough for use in racing series.

My guesstimate is around 375-380HP and US$ 85-90K. What engine? is probably more tricky... the Carrera S 3.8 will be cheaper and effective option. A dedicated smaller capacity 3.4 or 3.6l higher revving unit more emotive. I guess there is also a outside chance of a 4cyl turbo unit.

A GT4 may never threathen anything above the C2S. Bar should be set there. A 450 hp Cayman would be the best Porsche on the new car market and that can't be had.

I agree with your read based on what most believe is in the best interest of Porsche from a sales perspective but in terms of capabilities, this chassis is screeming for more hp. The competition is gaining ground on all of the 911 variants with every passing year so it is likely that all derivatives will see more hp moving forward. That would open up some room to let them be more aggressive with the GT4. They could also introduce the GT4 with a very high sales price and limit production to minimize the negative impact it would have on the 911.

here is my prediction

1- lighter than current cayman 20lbs give or take
2- pdk from the GT3
3- revs to above 8k rpm
4- 20hp over GTS

This will be one heck of a sports car to look forward to. Can't wait to see it, in the track shots in disguised form it still looks fantastic. I reckon it will be close to 400PS and close to 4.0sec from 0-100kmh, Nurburgring in 7:30!

my prediction....
- 375 to 380 hp....fits between standard 911 and a 911S, and is about 100 bhp less than the GT3
- PDK from the GT3 OR a 6-speed manual to appease the purists
- weight reduction of about 40 lbs
- will definitely rev over 8000

something seems to move...From a Rennlist forum user:

The Cayman GT4 is now configurable on the Porsche site, by the dealers, all without pictures, only option lists and prices, all the different options are listed, but what was missing is the cars BASIC PRICE. At the moment the car is only available as a "Manual"/3.8 ltr and 380 PS, sports seats plus and 20 inch GT4 wheels, no mention on tire size, but could be 265F-295R.
