Consumers don't care, they're buying FWD BMWs and MBs, but we here are supposed to care IMO. Yes this E Coupe looks like more of the same IMO. It can be on MRA, but the the E-Class version of MRA would dictate a car that is more upscale and more expensive than the E sedan, not cheaper or the same price. Back in the day the 300CE was like 10K more than the 300E sedan. The S Coupe is clearly pricer than the S sedan, and it should be that way with the E Coupe, but we'll see.

OK so we are going to ignore the fact that the current E-class coupe (at least in the U.S.) already started higher than the sedan?

I can only account for the post-refresh model, but it was never as cheap as the sedan. Further, right now the base model is the E400 Coupe starting at $54,000. Let's not also act like the E-class coupe was offering C-class quality for that price; it's refinement levels, interior trim, customization, and option list was at par with the W212 sedan or higher.

It's 2K man, that isn't even worth mentioning. I'm talking about a real premium over the sedan, not 2K which is pennies. Like I said the S550 is priced at 97K and the S550 Coupe is 122K, that is a real premium. 2K means NOTHING.

That just happened with the introduction of the W213. When the W212 was in the market is started at ~$45k. Granted, that was the entry level E250 diesel model but it is what it is. I'd expect the new couple to maintain that same distance.

There was never a true premium for this generation E-Class Coupe model for model W212 or not, at least not in the U.S. An E350 Coupe was within 1-2K of the E350 sedan, which is my point. True MB coupes at this level are pricier, again like the S Coupe vs the S Sedan.

What is "at this level"? Is the S-class not the odd one out then, given the C300 coupe/sedan are priced similarly? And, given Mercedes crowded market offerings, would pushing the new E-class coupe up much farther not get in the way of the CLS that we now know is coming back? That served as a bit of a bridge coupe offering in the past.

MB made a mess of the previous "E coupe" it was purely a marketing exercise since it is basically a C class underneath with a different exterior and interior design. Then MB went ahead and launch the C class coupe, which has to have the 63 AMG version because it would be crazy not to, and effectively kill of any purpose of launching the E 63 coupe.

The current E-coupe was conceived as a CLK. Sometime just before launch they decided to call it an E-coupe. A cynical marketing exercise that paid off somewhat, but it was never a true E-coupe.

The CLS is not a coupe for one, no matter what MB says. No the S Coupe follows tradition that was broken with the CLK/current E Coupe of having a mid-size coupe around the same price as the sedan (2K is nothing). Like I said before the 300CE was a big step up from the 300E, that being the last true E Coupe IMO. They just did a CLS Final Edition didn't they? That would indicate it's gone IMO. The 4-door AMG GT4 or whatever it's called will take that spot and be real competitor to the Panamera and the CLS may return in 2021 after the new generation S-Class is presented....as a 4-door S Class coupe as the tag implies. A CLE is a possiblity for the CLS's direct replacement, but I'd bet that MB is going to let AMG have that segment because of the strength of the Panamera range.

Right, I thought the same thing. Elsewhere in this forum it was confirmed there was going to be both a CLS and GT4 though.

It's shaping up very nicely. 2 bold statements:
1. there will be a chrome strip above the taillights;
2. there won't be a by a thin pillar divided side window.

Future will tell...

There is absolutely zero evidence to indicate a chrome strip. Actually if you look at it, there is nowhere to put it.

The way the pillar is and an interior spy shot three, it will have the small B pillar.

It's shaping up very nicely. 2 bold statements:

Future will tell but won't have the chrome strip above the taillights. Over the the thin pillar in the rear windows, won't be. That is obvius. All people can see in this shot, watching by the rear window.

Autobild can't make up their mind about the shape of the rear window in those renderings. In the first photo, it looks like the S-class, and in the second it looks like the C-class. Also, I agree, there won't be a chrome strip over the lights, but it does appear that they've done away with the sidelight window.

It won't be an ongoing chromestrip, as I stated already sometime ago, but a chromestrip above each taillight as long as that taillight. The same way as can be seen on the GLC Coupe.
