The car was designed to meet the needs of the European customers and the American ones in the same time.

I had always thought that the Edsel was focused solely on the North American market and that it was FoMoCos' reply to the multibrand cultures prevailing at GM (U.S) (6 brands including GMC) and Chrysler Corp.(U.S.) (5 brands). Prior to the Edsel, FoMoCo had only 3 U.S. brands.
