Bad news for the powertrains, they gonna use 4-cylinder engines!
Mercedes plans Mini-G-Class with 4-cylinder: Change of course with the "Little G"
Mercedes-Benz As is well known, the traditional
G-Class a new, more compact model. The off-road vehicle (Mini g), which is traded internally as "Little G", is to be
2027 will come onto the market – and will
not be offered exclusively electrically after all. According to information from industry circles, Mercedes is also planning
variants with combustion or hybrid drive.
Moving away from the purely electric approach
Originally, the little brother of the G-Class was intended as a consistent electric vehicle. CEO
Ola Källenius had positioned the model as part of the electrification strategy. In the meantime, however, there are many indications of a rethink: Demand for large electric SUVs is developing more cautiously than expected, even within the company's own portfolio. Against this background, Mercedes is now focusing on
a variety of drive systems instead of a one-way street with the "Little G". In addition to an all-electric version, at least one variant with a classic combustion engine – presumably electrified – is to be offered. The idea is to focus on the motorization of the
CLA model of the
MMA models, thus with the 4-cylinder M252 from Geely cooperation.
Technology: Two worlds, one claim
According to the current status, two basic concepts are planned: An
electric version with all-wheel drive, modern battery technology and a long range, and a highly
optimized combustion variant, presumably with a compact turbocharged gasoline engine and electric auxiliary drive. Regardless of the drive, the "Little G" is said to offer
real off-road capabilities. Unlike many urban
SUVoffshoot, Mercedes apparently relies on a robust design with a focus on traction, ground clearance and a controllable all-wheel drive system. This is intended to clearly distinguish the model from soft-washed lifestyle SUVs.
Design: Small shape, big genes
Visually, Mercedes remains close to the iconic G-
Design faithful: angular silhouette, short overhangs, upright front. The "Little G" will be noticeably more compact than the original, but should
remain recognizable as a G-Class at first glance. This is precisely a central part of the brand strategy: recognizability without mere copying. With the model, Mercedes wants to further develop the G-Class
as an independent sub-brand – similar to
AMG or
Maybach. The "Little G" is to be positioned well below the classic G-Class and appeal to new customers for whom the original is too big, too expensive or too uncompromising. The series premiere is expected at
the end of 2026, with the market launch in
2027. Prices are not yet official, but are likely to be well below the current G-Class.
Nach der G-Klasse bringt Mercedes nun auch die "kleine g" Klasse - intern "Little G" genannt - neben Elektro aber auch mir 4-Zylinder Motorisierung.
