Some amazing headlight tech on the new MOPH S-class.
The new light of the Mercedes S-Class Facelift
Smarter driving at night with next-generation DIGITAL LIGHT is now coming to the S-Class facelift
On dark roads or in difficult weather, the new DIGITAL LIGHT system in the S-Class immediately adapts to changing visibility conditions:
with up to 40 per cent more illumination, sharper precision in bends and more light output, driving at night is even safer and less strenuous. The new S-Class now features the next generation of DIGITAL LIGHT with Micro-LED technology. A powerful chip is used in the light module, which increases the high-resolution illumination field by around 40 percent and significantly increases brightness. At the same time, energy consumption is reduced by up to half compared to the previous system. The headlight units themselves also conserve resources. They maintain the same customer experience, but their weight has been reduced by more than a quarter. This is thanks to the more compact micro-LED design and the use of a single control unit. All software modules are integrated into the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB. OS) and were mainly developed in-house.
Another major innovation is the dynamically swivelling ULTRA RANGE high beam, which no longer simply shines straight ahead, but adjusts its direction. The partial high beam, which is also available in the USA, now works even more reliably, as the detection of poorly lit road users has been further improved. Thanks to combined camera data and map information, the active cornering light reacts even more precisely to the course of the road.
The S-Class Maybach Facelift (world premiere at the end of March 2026) will feature golden ambient light in the headlights
DIGITAL LIGHT with projection function is available either as an option ex works or as a Digital Extra via the Mercedes Benz Store. In addition to the familiar projection functions for wrong-way driving and lane departure warnings, the S-Class now complements a new cold warning system in which a snowflake is projected onto the road. The bottleneck light has evolved into a narrow lane light that activates automatically on all road types when a reduced lane width is detected. DIGITAL LIGHT with projection function also communicates with the driver: the headlights and taillights react with a short light show when the vehicle is locked, unlocked or the engine is switched off. The animation function can be activated or deactivated via MBUX, with the "Digital Rain" and "Star Wave" light shows now available in a fresh design.
The new Digital Light is also used in the GLC EQ
Mercedes Benz has already tested this lighting technology for the S-Class in its new light tunnel at the Immendingen Test and Technology Centre, which was officially inaugurated at the beginning of 2025. Regardless of the time of day and weather, the experts there can evaluate the light distribution of future Mercedes Benz models under reproducible conditions from the customer's point of view. The more than 100-meter-long drive-through light tunnel has a true-to-scale country road with dotted centerlines and side markings – making it one of the longest facilities of its kind in the automotive industry.
It is interesting that the previous Digital Light worked with very small switchable mirrors. There were 1.3 million small mirrors per main headlight. The new-generation Digital Light in the S-Class facelift, on the other hand, uses 25,000 micro LEDs (i.e. now without mirrors).
