2016 Kia Optima spied inside & out
Will feature an evolutionary design
The 2016 Kia Optima has been spied undergoing testing in Europe.

Since the outgoing model was one the more stylish entries in its segment, it looks like designers aren't going to mess with success. As a result, the car has a familiar shape but there appears to be longer rear doors and a lower roof. We can also see a sportier front bumper, LED-infused headlights and what appears to be a dual exhaust system.

The interior is camouflaged but features a three-spoke steering wheel, an infotainment system and plenty of chrome trim. The center stack is also angled towards the driver for easier access to commonly used controls.

Engine options will likely echo the Hyundai Sonata so expect choices to include a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with 185 bhp (138 kW) and 178 lb-ft (241 Nm) of torque as well as a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that develops 245 bhp (182 kW) and 260 lb-ft (352 Nm) of torque.

2016 Kia Optima breaks down on the Nurburgring

A 2016 Kia Optima prototype has broken down on the Nürburgring.

Details are limited but the car was participating in an industry pool session when something went wrong and had to stop at the Hohenrain which is just a few hundred meters away from the where the Koenigsegg Agera R development car crashed a couple of months ago. As a result, the track was briefly shut down so a tow truck could rescue the Optima and bring it back to Hyundai's European Technical Center for evaluation and repairs.

As we have previously reported, the 2016 Optima is expected to follow in the footsteps of its predecessor and adopt an evolutionary design with a sportier front bumper, longer rear doors and a lower roof.

Engine options will likely echo the Hyundai Sonata so expect choices to include a 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 185 bhp (138 kW) and 178 lb-ft (241 Nm) of torque as well as a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that develops 245 bhp (182 kW) and 260 lb-ft (352 Nm) of torque.

Current Optima looks good but engines and the way the car drives has let it down. If they improve these things then it will be more competitive. But certainly not that of exciting car to look forward to unless you are a die hard Kia fan

Agreed Derek, but also, I wonder if part of the development money went to the the style (Schreyer) and they cut it on other areas....not that I'm implying that they are Alfa Romeo

That's what I have always thought Kia has spent their money. Eye-catching design has to take the largest part of Kia's budget.

2016 Kia Optima first official image released

Debuts April 1

Following last week's teaser, Kia has published the first revealing image of their next generation Optima mid-size sedan.

Adopting an evolutionary design, Kia's new Optima shares many similarities with the SPORTSPACE concept and has retained the corporate tiger nose grille only now it is a little bit more flashy as seen on the larger K900. The front bumper gills are an interesting choice and adopt a similar chrome surround to create a more premium feel while the sculpted hood and stylish large alloys enhance the upscale look.

Kia says their fourth generation Optima will be available with "multiple engine choices" and will provide a more roomy interior cabin as well as "class-up premium features" along with an array of technologies the outgoing model doesn't have.

The sedan will likely be joined by a wagon version as seen in the aforementioned SPORTSPACE concept while the engine lineup will probably be sourced from the Hyundai Sonata. Chances are the US-spec model will get a 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated motor and a beefier 2.0-liter turbo. The European Optima will likely get an uprated version of the 1.7-liter CRDi which could also find its way inside a diesel-electric Optima hybrid as previewed by a conceptlast year.

Kia will unveil the new Optima on April 1 at the New York Auto Show.

2016 Kia Optima unveiled in New York with three different engines
Kia has unveiled the 2016 Optima at the New York Auto Show.

Designed to appeal to "consumers looking for a fresh alternative," the Optima has an evolutionary design but adopts a new front fascia with sweptback headlights, a slimmer grille and more prominent air intakes. The model can also be equipped with new HID headlights with a High Beam Assist system that automatically switches to low beams when oncoming traffic is detected.

Bigger changes occur in the cabin as the 2016 Optima features higher quality materials and a "cleaner, more unified design." The model also has more comfortable seats, additional soft-touch materials and a six-speaker audio system. Other highlights include a six-speaker audio system and an infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.

Higher-end variants boast an assortment of options including heated and ventilated front seats, leather and Nappa leather upholstery as well as an Infinity audio system with 14 speakers and a 630-watt digital amplifier.

The Optima can also be equipped with an assortment of safety gear including an Around View Monitor, Advanced Smart Cruise Control and a Blind Spot Detection system. Customers can also order Rear Cross Traffic Alert and an Autonomous Emergency Braking system which will automatically bring the vehicle to a stop to avoid a collision.

Under the hood, three different engines will be available including:

• A 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 185 bhp (137 kW) and 178 lb-ft (241 Nm) of torque
• A turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder with 178 bhp (132 kW) and 195 lb-ft (264 Nm) of torque
• A turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 247 bhp (184 kW) and 260 lb-ft (352 Nm) of torque

A majority of the engines are connected to a six-speed automatic transmission, while the 1.6-liter turbo is paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

Speaking of performance, the 2016 Optima has a lighter and stiffer chassis that uses more high-strength steel. The model also has more structural adhesives and hot stamped components which help to improve crash protection and handling while also reducing NVH levels.

The 2016 Optima will go on sale towards the end of the year and pricing will be announced closer to launch.

I'm actually a fan of this car, especially when you compare it to say a Camry or Accord. This thing actually has some style and swag to it .... but ooof! that hood shutline is terrible in white...and not really like the third window at the C-pillar. Overall, too much facelift and not enough newness.

Still attractive, especially in that red!
