Out next year
Renault's all-new Koleos mid-size SUV is being previewed in a couple of unofficial renders ahead of next year's launch.

The Kadjar is about to receive a bigger brother as Renault will finally replace the aging Koleos with an all-new model which they say will be considerably more upscale. Cavalino decided to render the mid-size high-riding model using the latest batch of spy shots and also infusing some of the Talisman's cues. It's bound to go on sale in the second half of next year and will essentially be Renault's version of the Nissan X-Trail but obviously with an entirely different design both inside and out.

Expect the overhauled Koleos to be more than 5 meters long so it will be significantly bigger than the aforementioned Kadjar which has an overall length of 4.45 meters. Renault is thinking about whether a seven-seat layout is necessary taking into account they sell the seven-seat Espace, but one possible solution to this problem is to sell the seven-seat Koleos in those markets where the Espace is not available.

Renault has already announced the second-gen Koleos will be sold in Asia and Australia while a decision regarding an European launch is still pending. The model is being developed in China where it will be locally produced and chances are Samsung will also be in charge of assembly in South Korea where the model will be known as the QM5.

Renault needs to do things in 2015:

1. Get their model names right. Koleos and Kadjar? No. I expect something better.

2. If they are to use one set of headlights and taillights throughout the line-up (those of the Talisman obviously), they need to make the rest of the design up to date. The massive rocker panel needs to rest in bloody peace.

Renault Maxthon spied getting ready to replace Koleos

Renault Maxthon spy photo

Spy photos show Renault is putting the finishing touches on its brand new midsize SUV which will reportedly be called “Maxthon.”

The Koleos has been on sale since 2007, so it’s obviously in dire need of a replacement especially since the model’s poor sales have prompted Renault from withdrawing it from several markets. Seen here is its direct replacement, the Maxthon, a midsize SUV which will share most of its underpinnings with the Nissan X-Trail. As a matter of fact, Renault's design chief Laurens van den Acker said in Geneva: "essentially we have made a Renault version of the X-Trail."

All that camouflage on the body can’t hide the fact it will borrow many styling cues from the Talisman midsize sedan and will be way bigger than the Koleos. Although we can’t see the interior in these pics, we expect the cabin to have a lot in common with Renault’s D-segment sedan/wagon.

Some of the goodies it will receive include those fancy LED headlights, Renault’s latest R-Link 2 infotainment system with a large portrait-style touchscreen, and a digital instrument cluster. While previous rumors indicated it would get an optional third row of seats, Laurens van den Acker said it will be sold strictly with five seats. He went on to specify there aren't enough families with four kids to justify having an optional third row of seats on the new SUV.

Expect to see the Renault Maxthon (name not confirmed) break cover next month at the Beijing Motor Show. The reason why the company with the diamond logo has decided to unveil the new SUV in China (rather than in Geneva) is because that will be its main market and the model will be assembled locally.

Besides China, Renault's latest high-riding model will also be sold in Australia, Asia, and Europe, with the former getting the SUV early 2017. Chances are it will also wear the Samsung badge for South Korea and it could be produced there as well for the local market.

Renaults choices for models' names goes from bad to worse.

I don't believe that the name will be "Maxthon". The name's strategy from Renault and for SUV is using the letter "K" as Kadjar. Only Captur is different, because in some markets, written with "K", sounds bad and "dangerous". By this reason, the preferred to keep the name Captur with "C".

And one chief from Renault has told that they've not any problem with the name "Koleos" and they are disposal to keep the same name. By these words and the name's strategy, I think the name "Maxthon" is onle one invented idea from any journalist.
