A3/S3/RS3 [Spy shots] 2016 Audi A3 Sedan Facelift Spied for the First Time

The Audi A3 is a small family car (C-segment) manufactured and marketed by Audi AG since September 1996. The first two generations of the Audi A3 were based on the Volkswagen Group A platform, while the third and fourth generations use the Volkswagen Group MQB platform.

This is the first time we've seen this test prototype, and it proves all the rumors about an update coming in 2016 are true.

Considering the car just started winter testing, we find the Geneva debut suggested by some to be too optimistic. But you never know. Cosmetically, we do not see huge changes here, but there are a few that grab the eye.

For instance, everybody around the office agrees that Audi is trying to make the A3 look like the A4. The headlights have lost some of their character and now have a pure rectangular design, flanking a new grille with a more clearly defined hexagon shape.

Around the back, we literally can't see anything being changed, but that could be because this is an early test prototype and taillights don't have to adhere to such stringent requirements as their partners at the front.

New engines? What new engines?!

This A3 sedan prototype has only one exhaust pipe on the left side of the vehicle. Right now, there's only one model that fits the description, and that's the 1.6 TDI.

That can mean one of two things. Either Audi is re-engineering the 1.6 TDI, or it's working on a new entry-level model. All the other A3 models come with a 1.2-liter TFSI petrol engine, but the sedan doesn't. In addition, Volkswagen has been installing a new 1.0-liter turbo on pretty much every compact car based on the MQB platform, including the big Touran.

However, we'd say the chances of a 1.0 TFSI version of the Audi A3 sedan are slim, as premium car companies hate small engines.

Our sources tell us the A3 facelift will debut with a new type of 1.8-liter turbo engine that will produce 190 PS instead of the current 180 PS and will consume less fuel by adopting the Cylinder on Demand technology from its smaller 1.4 TFSI brother.

That could explain what the TT coupe is doing in the convoy, since the 1.8 is its entry-level engine. However, we don't have definitive proof of this yet.

The updated A3 sedan will probably be ready for its debut by next September, when everybody will gather for the next Frankfurt Motor Show. Updates may also include a fully digitized speedometer and Apple CarPlay.

If they did they'd be waiting for a long time. There is no Frankfurt motor show next year.

Scoop: New Audi RS3 Sedan is on its way, complete with 400 horses

Despite the new Audi RS3 Sedan having been leaked in a presentation back in February, this marks the first time we're able to see it in daylight, surrounded by the straights and corners of the Nurburgring.

Since performance is what this car is all about, you'll be happy to know that the new RS3 Sedan will be using Audi's brand new 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder engine, found in the latest-gen TT RS. This means peak power and torque figures should be roughly identical with the latter's, rated at 400 PS (395 HP) and 480 Nm (354 lb-ft) of torque.

The TT RS also comes standard with Quattro all-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox with paddle shifts (no manual option), a configuration that should make its way to the RS3 Sedan as well, helping it get from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in a rumored 4 seconds flat.

In terms of looks, we know to expect a more aggressive front bumper with larger air intakes, side sills, a rear spoiler, diffuser and two oval exhaust tips, not unlike those found on the current RS3 hatchback.

As for availability, it's already been confirmed that the RS3 Sedan will be arriving in the US, which isn't really all that surprising seen as how Audi had been selling the A3/S3 Sedan as well as the A3 Cabrio for a while here - where the A3 hatchback (Sportback) is only available in e-tron form.

Once out, the new Audi RS3 Sedan will join the Mercedes-AMG CLA45 as the only two compact premium sports-sedans in the world, as BMW has yet to mirror any of these models.

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
