Giulia Speculative - Alfa Romeo Giulia (159 replacement)

The Alfa Romeo Giulia is a compact executive car produced by Alfa Romeo. Known internally as the Type 952, it was unveiled in June 2015, with market launch scheduled for February 2016, and it is the first saloon offered by Alfa Romeo after the production of the 159 ended in 2011.

New Alfa Romeo 159 delayed

06 March 2012

  • Alfa 159 replacement delayed
  • Issues with engine availability
  • Should be on sale by 2014
The replacement for the Alfa Romeo 159 is being delayed because suitable engines are not ready for it, Fiat-Chrysler boss Sergio Marchionne revealed to What Car?.
Speaking at the 2012 Geneva motor show he said: 'We are not delaying the Alfa because of architecture but because of availability of powertrains that match the DNA of the brand.'
Marchionne admitted that he would like to see Alfa Romeos have the same character and competence that the Fiat Group achieves with Ferrari and Maserati.
Despite the delays Marchionne expects that the new larger Alfa will be on sale by 2014 and that will also herald the brand’s return to the lucrative US market.

Now Alfa will have only two models on sale; the Mito and the Giulietta. I hope they won't fail till 2014.
"Marchionne admitted that he would like to see Alfa Romeos have the same character and competence that the Fiat Group achieves with Ferrari and Maserati."
This is my favorite quote, but I would like this to happen sooner than later.

Please, Please, Please let the new Giulia look good as an Alfa usually looks, get an alu chassis to lose weight, have powerful petrol engines and be rear-wheel drive.

It would be nice if it had Al chassis and RWD, but it only makes sense if it's a 3er competitor. Especially, if Maserati is serious about a 5er competitor, otherwise there will be some cannibalism amongst the high-end FIAT offerings.

This is the strategy I'd take with Alfa, Maserati, FIAT, and Lancia....

Alfa
MiTo (Mini competitor)
Giullieta (A3/1er competitor)
Giulia (RWD-based 3er competitor)

Maserati
5er competitor
Quattroporte (sporty 7er competitor)

Lancia- I would make it more a niche luxury maker-
- a Quattroporte-based luxury car in the vain of a high-end S-class or RR Ghost
- re-imagined Stratos with a mid-engined turbo V6, possible Cayman competitor

FIAT
Leave FIAT to contend with mainstream offerings

Alright, Marchionne, I did the hard work of laying it out, now make it happen :D

Except for Lancia, the what you have written for Alfa and Maserati is already in the program, add yet one SUV for each. But the problem is not in the planning, but in its fulfillment. We can wait years nothing will change.

I'd love AR to make BMW regain it's old nick again.."the German Alfa Romeo".:)

It hurts me so much to see Alfa Romeo, the maker of the most beautiful mainstream cars strugling so much this days... it's so painful.
Damm Marchionne.

Gianclaudio - what's with all the wild f*ck this and f*ck that anger? We're largely tolerant of such expressiveness but let's not go overboard ok?

Alfa have been struggling since the post WW2 economic boom was over (les trente glorieuses ). Hence why they were bought by FIAT (and that's true for Lancia as well).

The germans got it right, everyone else got it wrong.

I'm quite missing the Flat 4 of my 145. Hope I get the BRZ. But I have a huge project for my 147. Don't know if I'll build it because it is very costly: paint it 8C red, get full-leather poltrona frau in black with red stitching, swap the Autodelta NA 3.7l V6 stage II making about 330 PS, get all other Autodelta parts, swap the 156 Crosswagon Q4 rear transmission, and so get a 330 PS NA RWD 147. Of course I'm dreaming.

An engine IMO that tsits right behind the S54, and in front in terms of beauty. The last most beautiful engine bay a car had.

But I'd really like a worthy 3 Series rival from Alfa. I wonder where has the 3.0l V8 TBI engine Alfa was developping disapeared.

You're right Martin, I'm sorry, I would not happen again. My excuses.

Imhotep: For sure, but I think now Alfa has reached it's lowest point ever, just two cars available, and quite ugly. To end with mediocre looking cars after such a pedigree of absolutely beautiful cars is shameful.

Alex: My uncle had both, 145 and 147. I just loved those two, their wonderful sound, the feel-good look of the instruments and as you mention, those beautiful engines with chromed intake manifolds.

Regards!

Gorgeous looking engine!

I'm also thinking of dropping the NA 3.2 GTA engine in my 156.:D

What models are those two?

:)

Those are 1st and 2nd verion of the Alfa 6, the RWD ancestor of the 164 and 165. The 169 should also have returned to RWD, powered by an I5 disel engine, V6 petrol engine and high-performance V8 petrol engine. The Concept was going to be shown @ Geneva 2007, but the poject was cancelled. 5 years have past, and we are not close to any return of any RWD Alfa. Even the new Quattroporte and entry level Maserati sedan and taking time to come.

Here some spy pics while the car was getting loaded:

Fiat doesn't have money to develop Alfa and Lancia. Better ditch them and keep Ferrari, the milking cow and Maserati to the SUV's and sedans.

^

You are so wrong. FIAT doen't have the brain to develop Alfa and Lancia. Better ditch the CEO get someone like at VAG or BMW, who can make profit from every brand.

FIAT can do good engines (TS, TBI, JTS, JTM,...), Ferrari good chassis, and thanks to Pininfarina, Giuagiaro and Bertone good design, but all the rest is garbage.

Yes but R&D costs alot. You just don't throw an engine in to a chassis. At least a billion for R&D.

Just make them as beautiful as the 159, plz :'(

There are many design era at Alfa. The current one is my least favorite. The older ones, 156, 166,... were design mostly by Walter Da Silva, who is now at VW but passed by Audi, among his works the R8. The 159 is a work of Giugiaro and Centro Stile Alfa. The Mito and Giullieta are desinged only by Centro Stile Alfa, and I don't really like them. A bit to soft and lacking character. 159 is really best of all and its production has stopped.
