X5 Sat in the E70 X5 for a while today. (pics, video and impression inside)

The BMW X5 is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV produced by BMW. The X5 made its debut in 1999 as the E53 model. It was BMW's first SUV. BMW marketed the X5 officially as a "Sports Activity Vehicle" (SAV), rather than an SUV, to indicate its on-road handling capability despite its large dimensions.

So I went to the BMW dealership here in Miami today and they had an X5 in the showroom so I decided to take a long look at it since I had to wait for my friend's car to get serviced. Here are my impressions:

Exterior: The car looks better in real life. This was a black on black model. I really liked the rear of the car, but didn't like the are where the hood wraps around the headlights in the front. The gap between the two seemed weird and unfinished. From the profile it looked like a sportier revision of the previous X5. The wheels as you will see in the pic looked small. This model had sidestep bars which I found to be more in the way than helpful.

Now to the interior: I liked it. It felt more luxurious than the Q7 and especially unfortunately, more luxurious than the ML. I liked the leather on the door panels (which the ML lacks) and i liked the extensive amount use of wood. The wood itself though was ugly and to me looked like the fake wood found on american cars. The wood/real metal that stretches the width of the cabin was real nice. I think this is the best BMW interior on the market in terms of design. I liked the little slot infront of the iDrive that hold your cell phone.

There were some quality issues i noticed though. The plastic used for the air con vents felt cheap and flimsy. The overhead panel (which I took a picture of) was made out of cheap plastic. Also the glovebox in the X5 is very innovative and I took a pic of it, but when closed the gap between the dash and top door of the glovebox had a considerable gap and you could see the black metalic mechanical bits which was dissapointing.

The plastic trim on the tailgate also felt cheap. One thing I did like in the tailgate area was the fact that the floor opened up to the tire and tools below, but the cover to the floor actually had a strut and it made it feel of real high quality.

The rear seat was pretty comfortable and had good leg room. This was not a 7 passenger version.

Overall I did like the interior, and it felt a step above the ML. I think the ML in the facelift will add the GL wood strips and leather on the doors to stay competitive. Pretty nice overall though. Enjoy the pics, and feel free to ask questions.

The car didnt seem to impress, you whined a lot ;) :D I didnt get it, the interior in ML has better qualitymaterials and finish than X5, thats what you trying to say?

Was that the 4.8 liter version?

Nice little review...bad pics :D LOL

My question to you is, what kind of options were on it and what was the sticker price? Did you check that stuff?

Sorry if I wasn't clear. The ML and Q7 interiors are worse, with the ML probably coming in 3rd. The X5 was of higher quality.

This was not the 4.8, this was the 3 litre and there was no sticker on it, so I don't know what the options if any there were on the car.

Yea sorry about the pics, it was with my cameraphone.

you were probably clear, its my head thats not clear :D

These are the rims this car need, big ones.

:usa7uh:

The glove box has to be the coolest thing since sliced bread.

Nope, ... since the wheel. :D

Anyway pretty decent mini review, tough since this is a bimmer things about the driving you have been more important than luxury and so on. :eusa_doh: :t-drive:

No problems mate! Well a few things....it has I drive and I think the running boards on the side are an option as well. But thanks. So you're in Miami Phybenz?

Will have to wait to see the car before I agree with you on everything, but overall a positive review, thanks!

BTW, I'll remind you that this car has only recently entered production, so you can only expect there to be a few quality issues!

Of course you expect from early production models some quality issues, and to be honest I am pretty nitpicky, and a lot of these things are minor.

NarutoRamen I was born and raised in Miami and still am! Are you?

Thanks a lot for this little review mate! I see you liked the car which is a good thing. This means that it's actually very good. I think it will take some time until it comes here though...

NarutoRamen I was born and raised in Miami and still am! Are you?

No, I've never been there. My friend is from Atlanta and he was telling me that him and a bunch of friends used to go to Miami for vacations...he said lots of fine looking women down there!

Many plastic parts of the car seemed cheap yet the interior is better than the Q7's? Hard to believe cause Q7's interior is top notch.:eusa_thin

Anyway thanks for the review.

Nice review, I do enjoyed it thanks.

I don't know if anyone notice that the steering wheel is non-sport steering wheel meanwhile there is that "Sport" button by the shifter. I thought that "Sport" button only available when you order the sport package and if that's the case, shouldn't the steering wheel be different?

I'm little confused here...

By the way, the fanny of the new X5 (E70) definitely look a lot better than the previous X5 (E53).

I was less impressed with the Q7 interior which I also found to have numerous bits of cheap plastic. I found the x5 interior "warmer" than the Q7's.

I drove both 3.0 and 4.8i and like the 4.8i better. Handling is better than E53 4.4i. Do not like the plastic bumpers. You can hide them on black color but otherwise need the aero kit. Sports package and Tech package are a must.

The BMW X5 is easily best in class in my own opinion..... I mean who really buys one of these to venture of road... There designed for luxury and presence.... SOmething that the E70 delivers... The Q7 is a nice car..... But i do perosnally believe it is bettered by the E70!!!! The X5 has a beautiful interior.... I just hope all new BMW's get this sort of interior development and attention to detail re. The new 7 series which is coming in the next 2 yrs.... As the flagship it should offer an unparal interior compared to the other BMW... and it needs to have a brillaint interior if it wishes to compete with the S-Class

wow in my review i had different views......i thought the Q7 was best in interior, then X5, then Ml

I believe that the Q7's interior has superior fit an finish to the X5's, but when it comes to design the X5 has it stomped. Even out of all the newer BMW's the E70's interior feels by far the most well designed. Everything is where it should be and none of the shapes or interior trim is offensive as has been said for many other a late BMW.

Does anyone notice the steering wheel on the X5, that thing is so ugly.
