So I went to the BMW dealership here in Miami today and they had an X5 in the showroom so I decided to take a long look at it since I had to wait for my friend's car to get serviced. Here are my impressions:
Exterior: The car looks better in real life. This was a black on black model. I really liked the rear of the car, but didn't like the are where the hood wraps around the headlights in the front. The gap between the two seemed weird and unfinished. From the profile it looked like a sportier revision of the previous X5. The wheels as you will see in the pic looked small. This model had sidestep bars which I found to be more in the way than helpful.
Now to the interior: I liked it. It felt more luxurious than the Q7 and especially unfortunately, more luxurious than the ML. I liked the leather on the door panels (which the ML lacks) and i liked the extensive amount use of wood. The wood itself though was ugly and to me looked like the fake wood found on american cars. The wood/real metal that stretches the width of the cabin was real nice. I think this is the best BMW interior on the market in terms of design. I liked the little slot infront of the iDrive that hold your cell phone.
There were some quality issues i noticed though. The plastic used for the air con vents felt cheap and flimsy. The overhead panel (which I took a picture of) was made out of cheap plastic. Also the glovebox in the X5 is very innovative and I took a pic of it, but when closed the gap between the dash and top door of the glovebox had a considerable gap and you could see the black metalic mechanical bits which was dissapointing.
The plastic trim on the tailgate also felt cheap. One thing I did like in the tailgate area was the fact that the floor opened up to the tire and tools below, but the cover to the floor actually had a strut and it made it feel of real high quality.
The rear seat was pretty comfortable and had good leg room. This was not a 7 passenger version.
Overall I did like the interior, and it felt a step above the ML. I think the ML in the facelift will add the GL wood strips and leather on the doors to stay competitive. Pretty nice overall though. Enjoy the pics, and feel free to ask questions.
