Samsung Galaxy S III dethrones iPhone as world's top seller

For years tech pundits have been searching for an "iPhone" killer -- a mythical new device that would dethrone Apple's mighty handset as the most admired or popular smartphone. It may be already here. For the first time, Samsung's Galaxy S III overtook Apple's iPhone 4S to become the world's best-selling smartphone model for the third quarter (July through September) of 2012, according to new research by Strategy Analytics. The Galaxy S III shipped 18 million units worldwide, compared with 16.2 million for the iPhone 4S. That's 11% of all smartphones shipped on the planet.

Yes, this is the phone in those mocking TV ads that show annoying fanboys and fangirls in a thinly disguised Apple store line, obsessing over their impending purchase while a happy Galaxy S III owner saves a place in line ... for his parents. Released in May, the Android-based Galaxy S III boasts a bigger touchscreen and longer battery life than the iPhone 4S, along with more megapixels in its camera and the ability to run on 4G cellular networks. Some tech sites have rated it the best smartphone on the market.

But the Galaxy S III reign atop the sales rankings will likely be short-lived. As Strategy Analytics pointed out, iPhone 4S sales waned in the third quarter as consumers waited for the iPhone 5, which went on sale September 21. Apple sold 5 million iPhone 5s that first weekend and is expected to sell many millions more during this holiday shopping season.

I have to wait 2 weeks before I get my Galaxy III. It's going to be a long wait :)

Really Andre ? Here it is available in 4 or 5 colors, top of shelves everywhere. Awesome fone.

Only one complain for guys who text and drive or use it as a fone actually, it is a bit wide and you need massive fingers to dial with one hand. Rest is super in terms of data speed, phonecall reliability, GUI, and apps.

I really like it, btw guys, ZERO complains till now as a service provider of Mobile networks from this S3. Unlike iPhone where with each s/w release we have to scratch our heads with what could probably go wrong. Latest issue, Network gone on GSM network only for iPhones. Man we in communication with Huawei, Ericsson, Alcatel-Lucent to find traces of the issue why it happens on iPhones only.

Before K-A gets in, I will say this is a misleading article with a greatly exaggerated headline.

Thank you. All I'll say is it counts the final months of the 4S vs the first months of the GS3. IPhone 5 is already outselling GS3 massively, and Apple's selling them so quickly that there's a major supply issue where people like me who have been waiting months still can't find one.

Foxconn's own CEO said how the insane demand for iPhone 5 is too much for even Foxconn to handle and that the innovative cell touch technology and innovative/perfected design requirements are amongst the toughest demands of assembly that they ever encountered.

-Sent from my awesome GS3 (but I really want a more awesome and premium iPhone 5 :D)

Also note that Samsung reports phones shipped while Apple reports phones actually sold. Also Apple sold 27 million phones last quarter so this article isn't accurate, and Apple provides no details between iPhone 4S and 5 breakdown so this article is even more inaccurate (probably payed for by Samsung like all of Apple's tear-down articles are nowadays). It's also lame that it compares specs to iPhone 4S when iPhone 5 out performs GS3 in every fundamental way.

Funny, while I'm writing this my piece of crap Samsung keyboard that's stressful to type on because of how horriblyit works is flickering my whole screen and stuttering the whole OS. Also the piece of crap flimsy plastic on the back has one ofthe "teeth" not clipping into the back chassis so the top right corner is sticking out. I've never even dropped the phone.

Sorry guys, the awful material quality and design and fit/finish along with OS unrefinements in how its mated to the hardware make this feel ike a waste of extra money from my perfect 4S. The whole aesthetic feel of it is comparatively tacky. What I do love is the extra screen real estate for my big hands.

Glad some of you like it so much but for my needd its just frustratingly crude in some respects.

Im happy for Samsung, they have come a long way in the mobile phone industry, the only thing that annoys me about the S3 is that there are 5 different variations (for different networks). Pity the international version was not available here.

Either way, the iPhone 5 will definitely outsell the S3 in Q4 and retake its place as the best selling phone.

Just replaced my three year old Original Droid with the S III. Thought about the 5, but didn't want to become a *****.
So far it is a great phone and very fast.

Nothing wrong with becoming an iSheep Nate :D.

In other news, Google just botched their launch of the Nexus 4. I was hoping I could get one since my cousin wants my Nexus, but no luck getting one. Can't believe of all companies, Google can't handle that many traffic/orders. Makes me want to go buy an iPhone, but I'm on T-Mobile.
Blogs are saying they sold out in like 30 minutes, but really? How many did they have on sale, 4?? People on Twitter and Google Plus are complaining about the whole experience.

iPhone 5 FINALLY came into stock at a Best Buy in my area today (have been trying to track it for over a month).

There was a huge line just for it, and they were selling out within the first couple of hours.

Turns out, Samsung ONCE AGAIN is lowering prices and offering incentives to move the GS3. 2 weeks ago you could get one for $99 on Sprint or Verizon, then they announced that for Black Friday you can get one with any carrier for $49.

Today, while I was about to take the second to last White 16GB iPhone 5, Best Buy offered me an additional Sprint $100 cash back on my GS3 AND they'd give me the tax amount back (roughly $107 I got back), AND a free month of insurance. I ended up taking the extra cash and keeping the S3. Now, I got my S3 for a total of $34 out the door WITH a month of insurance. I DEFINITELY wanted iPhone 5 more, but to save almost $200 from the iPhone 5 and keep a decent enough phone in the GS3, was good enough for me today. I still have 22 days to change my mind and locate another iPhone 5 if it bugs me too much.

Samsung will need all the help they can get as evidenced by massive price slashing on the GS3 and iPhone 5 demand so heavily outstripping supply.

But I know, my Apple "fanboy" card has been put in suspension. At least I acknowledge it's still the superior product. :D

Generally phones become cheaper as they reach their mid life cycle, the galaxy has been out for nearly 6 months, so it is only normal for them to discount the phone.

You are the exact opposite of my friend, he dislike apple but he has an iphone, he treats it like crap though.

My phone has arrived. Time to play and explore my phone.
First quick impression: my previous phone is small compare to SIII :)
