Samsung Electronics Co expects sales of its new Galaxy S III, launched at the end of last month as a main rival to Apple’s iPhone, to top 10 million during July, making it the South Korean group’s fastest selling smartphone.
It also predicted earnings from its handset division would be higher in the current second quarter than in January-March, countering market concerns that tight supplies of the new Galaxy model and the weak global economy would pressure earnings at Asia’s most valuable technology firm.
Shares in Samsung dropped 4.2 percent on Monday to a four-and-a-half month low, after more brokers cut their quarterly profit outlook, citing concerns over its chip and telecoms businesses. The benchmark KOSPI stock index was down 1.2 percent.
“The overall market condition was challenging due to euro zone issues and tight supply of components … but (our) second-quarter results will be better than the first quarter,” JK Shin, head of Samsung’s mobile division, told reporters.
Profit from Samsung’s mobile division nearly trebled in January-March to $3.6 billion, accounting for 73 percent of group operating profit.
“Looking beyond its current weakness in the chip sector, it appears investors are also worried that global macroeconomic woes may eat into handset sales in the second half,” said Han Seung-hoon, an analyst at Korea Investment & Securities.
OUT OF STOCK
Samsung kicked off global sales of its Galaxy S III on May 29, but shipments have been affected by the tight supply of parts such as the handset casing for the pebble-blue model.
In the United States, where sales were launched last Thursday, major carriers including Sprint Nextel Corp, T-Mobile and AT&T have not been able to offer the Galaxy with 32 gigabytes of memory, partly due to tight supply.
“Due to overwhelming demand for the Galaxy S III worldwide, Samsung has informed us they will not be able to deliver enough inventory of Galaxy S III for Sprint to begin selling the device on June 21. We are working closely with Samsung on a delivery schedule to support our launch,” Sprint said on its web site. It has yet to start shipping pre-orders for the 32 GB version.
“We’re getting far better reviews on S III than we did with its predecessors globally … and supply simply can’t meet soaring demand. We’ve sent executives and staff to almost all our (component) suppliers to ensure a smooth offering and hopefully things will get better from next week,” Shin said.
Samsung launched its first Galaxy model two years ago in a rush to counter Apple’s iPhone success. Then, Samsung’s smartphone market share was below 10 percent. It has since overtaken Apple, and the company said in late April that new Galaxy smartphones would “substantially contribute” to second-quarter results.
Analysts have downgraded estimates for Samsung’s second-quarter smartphone shipments in recent weeks, predicting that sales of the latest Galaxy model have triggered a steeper than expected drop-off in sales of earlier products. They also cited tight supply of the S III model and growing competition from low-end manufacturers such as Huawei Technologies and ZTE Corp.
Shin said Samsung was also doing well in the low-end segment of the smartphone market.
JPMorgan cut its forecast for Samsung’s second-quarter smartphone shipments by a tenth to 50 million units.
Samsung sold 44.5 million smartphones in January-March – equal to nearly 21,000 every hour – giving it 30.6 percent market share. Apple sold 35.1 million iPhones, taking 24.1 percent market share.

This is good news for Apple. That means the iPhone 5 will sell over 10 Million within the same time frame. :D It would be nice if a China Mobile deal would be signed by then. Apple's phone sales will literally double without them doing anything more than literally signing a paper.... that doesn't even take into account natural growth and their own progression.

Isn't the GSIII a plastic cased phone? I can't imagine tactile quality (and I've heard people state this who have held it) is the same as the iPhones anti-plastic, high quality casing.

Yeap the GS 3 has an all plastic case, I have held the phone on my hand before, it feels more solid than it looks, but it still cannot match the glass and metal casing of the iphone. Samsung products are quite reliable so even if the S3 looks a bit cheap it will last.

Interesting. So it's still plastic which is naturally cheaper than the iPhone's material, but for plastic it's a high quality piece. Sounds like some car discussions we have. :D

I can't wait for iPhone 5 to see what Apple has in store. I think it's gonna be a brilliant piece of machinery. Apple know they have to come correct, apparently Steve Jobs was working on it up until his last day, it'll be one of the first all-new designs we see from Jonathan Ive and co in a while, and of course, those pesky copycats (Samsung, Google, and co. :D) have been nipping at their heals with some formidable iterations of their own.

What pisses me off about that video is how obvious the Samsung is a blatant ripoff of the iPhone. Looks like an iPhone on steroids.

Must be nice when Samsung, Google, etc. let someone else do all the R&D and innovation, and then just one up them on specs when they launch their models afterward. It reminds me of the relationship between Kia/Hyundai and Mercedes/BMW to the "T".

man you really have no idea what are you talking about. Try an android and we'll speak. the whole system is different, it makes apps look like a minor thing with the customizations of widgets on endless number of pages. Nvidia tegra engines, quad processors, upgradable memories, touchwiz .... etc etc etc. Shall I go more ?

Must we start this apple vs android war in this forum as well? We all know this debate will never end.

many debates will never end in the forum yet I keep seeing the same thing over n over. at least I based mine on something solid :p

Funny thing is my old phone's screen broke. I needed a new phone and was hoping to get the Samsung, but now it's delayed on all networks. So I had to get the iPhone. The Samsung was my choice, but that's what happens when you don't make enough phones.

I did, last month, and I returned it. ;) It was an HTC Android.

I don't need much complexity out of my phone, therefore they all work well for me. I at least respect and support Apple's business model, their innovation, and would rather take the OG than a copycat. Not to mention, the iPhone's handheld quality still can't be matched, and I like Apple's IOS ease of use, and I like that with Apple, everything is approved by "Apple", it makes for a simpler and less chancy user experience (this goes big time for computers, i.e Windows VS Apple's OS).

HighestofHigh: The reason that Apple makes such concise phones is why they were able to generate a cult like passion from their enthusiast base and why their profit margins are so high, and overhead so low (comparatively speaking). It's the same argument I make toward M-B/BMW diluting their product lines with so many models. Apple's business model is that of a high end one. I.e, they run their operation like a "Luxury Manufacturer", but the popularity they've generated has them producing them as a mass-market manufacturer. Putting in low end iPhones or too many models would make them just like "everyone else", and that's what Apple need to be careful from.

Samsung make some of the most POS low end phones you can find (I looked at one and couldn't believe how cheap it felt and the OS looked even compared to the entry-level LG next to it). As a business, it's fine for them, but as someone who's trying to copy Apple's "high quality or no quality" outlook, it just doesn't work with products like that, and due to that, they'll continuously copy Apple so desperately while they scratch their heads wondering why they still can't develop as powerful a brand-cachet (then put out commercials and lamely throwing in the towel by making fun of Apple's passionate fan base, as Samsung has done).

Also, like I said, it's easy to out-spec IOS when Android is a ripoff of it. Google's ex-CEO was on Apple's board, all of a sudden quits, then months later, Android is launched! Talk about shady business.

To me, comparing this to cars, Android is like Toyota, and the higher you go, you get to Lexus. Mercedes, BMW, will innovate, set the trends, put out the highest tactile quality they can (historically speaking, at least), then Lexus will come out with copied elements, increase the HP a little, increase the screen size, outperform it on paper (look at the GS VS 5-Series and E-Class in Magazine tests), yet that underlying quality still isn't "there", if you're paying attention. People ACCEPT Android, most people just take the cheapest free Smartphone upgrade and don't even know it's called "Android". People WANT an Apple product, and know what they're paying for when they get it.

I apologize for the waxing here, but as I'm an enthusiast passionate about CARS and not the business of cars, with these "tech" products I'm heavily interested in the business that revolve around the products.

Yep, heard about that! Huge victory for Apple, and very righteous.

If you read the timeline, the Samsung CEO all but admits during each "statement" about their Tablet (when it was being released) that they kept rushing it into production due to Apple's lead, not to mention, mentioning how "Apple made it thinner... our next one will be out with fixes" or something like that.

Please Apple isn't exactly guilt free when it comes to stealing ideas from its competitors, plus you can say whatever you want about Samsung, fact is they are they ones who makes the processor for the iphone and ipad. Also it takes more than a few months to create a new phone operating system from scratch.

Yes, Samsung makes many great things, and does supply what Apple hires them to, and Google "does" many great things as well. However, Android wouldn't exist if it weren't for IOS, and Samsung would still be making whatever it is that they were before they linked onto Apple's "modern revolution" of gadgets. If it weren't for the iPhone, Samsung wouldn't have the Galaxy.... or it certainly wouldn't look anything like it does now, and let's not even get into the frenzied copies of Apple's one significant Tablet with whatever iteration that these other guys will throw at the wall whilst crossing their fingers in hopes that it sticks. Of course, Google's blatant ripoff of IOS is well obvious. I mean, Google's ex-CEO was on Apple's board, resigns, then as if out of thin air.... Android appears (from a Search-Engine company at that).

Apple's full of ruthless business tricks as well, but at least they paved their own way in creating their own concise identity. Samsung nor Android have much of an identity in the media field other than dropping whatever Apple does after Apple does, with various exceptions. Apple isn't winning so many of these patent trials for nothing.

I find it to be just like what we see from Kia/Hyundai VS M-B/Audi. Apple's key goal here is to not slip up in keeping up their identity and evolving their products, with hopefully some more revolutions under their belt (it's kind of funny that people will say that "if Apple does revolutionize again, they'll fail", as if revolutionizing is so easy.... as if every big company revolutionizes even once in their life-spans). As long as they stay on course, I don't see their highly respected brand and products (highest satisfaction rating of pretty much any company in any field in about any survey taken) faltering any time soon.

Basically, at this point in time, Apple's biggest threat is Apple.

It's funny, because I'm not a tech-enthusiast, I'm a car enthusiast. But I'm not a fanboy of any one car maker, however I would full admit that I'm an Apple fanboy without blinders on. They've simply earned me as such. And without them, I would have never been able to be as successful in my field of demanding creativity which requires advanced products that are DURABLE (my Macbook is an absolute WARRIOR, whilst every PC my family has had has crapped out multiple times during my current most-used Macbook's life span), not to mention, thus far been the smartest investment anyone with any rationale can make.
