XC90 [Rumors] Next Generation Volvo XC90 v3 a.k.a. Embla

The Volvo XC90 is a mid-size luxury SUV manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars since 2002. The first generation was introduced at the 2002 North American International Auto Show and used the Volvo P2 platform shared with the first generation Volvo S80 and other large Volvo cars. It was manufactured at Volvo's Torslandaverken in Sweden. Volvo moved production equipment of the first generation to China and ended Swedish production at the end of 2014, renaming the car as the Volvo XC Classic (or Volvo XC90 Classic). In late 2022, the electric-only EX90 was introduced as the successor of the XC90. However, in September 2024, Volvo launched the second facelift of XC90, and stated that both models would be sold together.

Where's that Embla name come from? It won't be called XC90 anymore?
Embla is the first woman according to Norse Asatron.
At that launch, Samuelsson said that Volvo would diverge from its long-running XC nomenclature for SUVs by giving the new car “a name, like a child”.
Samuelsson too:
“We’re talking about a totally new architecture, a new-generation of born-electric, all-electric cars with central computing. It’s good and clear to mark that this is a new beginning, and that’s why we’re not going to have numbers and letters, an engineering type of name. We’re going to give them a name as you give a newborn child a name.”

As early as the end of last year, we reported that Volvo registered the "Embla" trademark, in the Norse mythological system, Embla is the name of the first woman after the gods created mortals, and the new car is volvo's first pure electric SUV flagship, which is a name that is very in line with the Nordic cultural background and meaning.

The Volvo XC90 successor, most likely known as Embla's all-electric SUV flagship, will prototype the REFORM concept and will be the first to be built on the SPA2 platform, which is compatible with both fuel and pure electric products.

This is the reason for the “sporty wagon-like”vehicles that Automotive News described. These new SUVs cannot be as tall as the XC60 or the XC90. Being lower reduces the frontal area, consequently making them more aerodynamic. For them to accommodate passengers with the same comfort, they have to be longer. That said, the V546 should be as roomy as a XC60: although it is longer, it should also be lower.

Automotive News recently broke the news that Volvo will have an EV codenamed V546 that sits between the XC60 and the XC90 in terms of size. It is not the Embla – an electric SUV aimed to eventually replace the XC90, which looks more like a station wagon on steroids. This information will be relevant when you read more about Volvo’s plans.

They were revealed to 800 dealers from North and South America in a recent meeting in Miami. According to Automotive News, the five electric cars will consist of a small and a large crossover, a sedan, and two “sporty wagon-like models.” The description fits the Embla – based on the Volvo Concept Recharge – and the V546. And there’s a reason for that.

Electric cars cannot be like most crossovers and SUVs, because battery packs do not retain as much energy as a fuel tank. That said, they have to be as efficient as possible in dealing with that energy. If it spends too much resisting air with a boxy design, with an awful drag coefficient, it will not travel as far as a more streamlined EV would.
The electric sedan is the only one we have not heard anything about so far. The crossovers Automotive News mentioned should be an all-electric XC60 and an EV smaller than the XC40, which already has its electric version, the XC40 Recharge. Its lousy range reinforces what we told you about the tall electric station wagons Volvo plans to sell. The PHEVs should be the refreshed versions of the S90 and XC90.

rear squared lights makes me think this is a Polestar and not the XC90 successor. Then again, the Polestar would shorter roof height to give it a more squatter, wagon-like profile.

?‍♂️

Agree it looks like a new sporty front glued to the existing car. The upcoming Polestar 3 looks much more sporty and attractive in that respect and in line with the ‘stationwagon on steroids’ description above.

These three all look absolutely tragic, and the current XC90 looks far better.

you sure it's not 'LieTimes'? Jonny Lieberman, not sick, gone solo? Cheeky feckers. In the real world the XC40 BEV does a bit more, range, than the I-Pace, but no one has ever come out and said that was lousy, so implying its 300 miles range was fraud.
Agreed. He’s definitely one of my least favorite journos.

No it's not the Polestar model.
Polestar model will be Polestar 4, and then Volvo XC100 (name not knowed yet)

Next-Generation Volvo XC90 Accurately Rendered After Patent Images
Fresh patent pics show a good chunk of the interior.

Volvo unveiled the second-generation XC90 over eight years ago and it's safe to say the midsize luxury SUV has aged gracefully. It still looks relatively fresh despite being around for quite a while during a period virtually all of its rivals have switched to next-generation models. A successor is inevitable and last week we took a good (albeit indirect) look at it through patent images. These have now been transformed into unofficial renderings.

Looking quite familiar, the XC90 seemed to be the purely electric model judging by the closed-off front grille. The overall exterior styling won't be a significant departure and should have some Polestar design cues. Pop-out door handles and a fresh take on Volvo's traditional upright taillights are earmarked for the new model

Volvo has said the next-gen vehicle will get an actual name rather than an alphanumeric designation. The Geely-owned marque has said the first letter will be a vowel, with some reports claiming the XC90 will be renamed Embla. However, a recent trademark filing shows the Swedes have taken legal measures to register EXC90.
Perhaps the newly registered moniker will be used for the current model as Volvo plans to continue production. It's even getting a facelift, which might come along with a purely electric derivative that would be called EXC90. However, nothing is official at this point and this is all speculation on our part in an attempt to decipher the mystery.

Meanwhile, fresh patent images show a good chunk of the interior, albeit it's missing some parts. Even so, we can easily tell the SUV will have a portrait-oriented infotainment and a continuous air vent design The lateral spokes of the steering wheel suggest it'll incorporate capacitive-touch buttons, while the "floating" center console offers ample storage underneath the armrest.

It should be noted the next-gen XC90 / Embla will only be a temporary flagship SUV as Volvo is cooking up a fullsize XC100 (will have a different name) that should take after the 2021 Recharge concept. It too will be electric as part of the company’s ambitions to drop combustion engines altogether by the end of this decade. Volvo was among the first automakers to announce plans to gradually retire ICEs and go all-in on EVs.

This is the route I expect manufacturers to take with some ICE models over the next year's. Either discontinue, consolidate or just do a big facelift.
