Press Release

The new dimension of driving pleasure is the RUF Rt 12 S. This high performance sports car connects high end performance with complete road capability. The refined biturbo boxer engine with 504 kW (685 hp) develops a maximal torque of 880 Nm and even satisfies highest demands. The roll cage which is integrated in the ceiling has been developed by RUF and belongs to the standard equipment of the Rt 12 S.The new RUF sets a new course with the dynamic design of the front with separate LED alternative lamps for the position light and the turn signals. A discreet carbon rear spoiler with tearing edge, air ducts which are harmonically integrated in the widened rear fenders and exterior mirrors from the RUF CTR 3 complete the appearance of the Rt 12 S.The RUF has forged 19 inch light alloy wheels in the front and in the rear. Behind you can see the ceramic brake discs of this high performance brake system. The chassis and the aerodynamics are tuned to a maximum speed of 360 km/h.Optionally we can deliver a height adjustable front axle which hydraulically offers 50 millimetres more chassis clearance by pushing a button for passing basement garages and higher curbs easily. The interior is constructed for a RUF known functionality. Extremely contoured bucket seats or comfortable sport seats and a steering wheel with maximum grip offer the right ergonomics for fatigue-proof driving. Applications in varnish, aluminium or carbon are possible and offer the client an individual scope of design.
The RUF Rt 12 S coupé can optionally be delivered with rear drive or four-wheel drive and costs 255,900.00 Euro (plus VAT).

RUF do such an excellent job with aftermarket 911 conversions. So much more complete and thorough looking than the horrors from 9ff and (particularly) Gemballa.

I agree. Ruf is an excellent carmaker. Their creations are not tacky, very reliable, very thoroughly engineered.

They're not only squeezing the most hp and air intakes they can into the car like some do.

If it's a Ruf, it must be great! Ruf is probably the best thing ever happened to the Porsche! :usa7uh:

Careful you guys, your making Ruf sound like just another tuner company.

^ Technically, that's exactly what they are. Irrespective of how good they are.

RUF is recognized as a manufacturer by the German govt. And the RUF cars get their own VIN (they use unmarked Porsche as the basis). Also that is the reason you can find RUF cars in some versions of the game Gran Turismo even though Porsche didn't give Sony the license to have Porsche cars in the game. But having said that, I also consider them to be tuners in the end though probably the best ones around.

This is true.

Ruf is, legally speaking, an independant carmaker and not a tuner. The amount of mods on the cars allow them this status.

The fact that they are allowed, like Sunny said, to have their own VIN number is further proof of that. Only a carmaker can have his own chassis numbers.

Interestingly enough, 9ff is an independant carmaker too, since few years.

The thing with Ruf is that in their core business activity they are deemed as manufacturers BUT what they do is re-manufacture existing automobiles that were designed from scratch but the actual car maker. What we see here is an aftermarket re-engineered 911.

Yeah, true. But as they often go from the body-in-white and change pretty much everything else...

The Ruf CTR3 doesn't even share the platform with an existing Porsche. And the 9ff GT9 "Veyron-killer" shares 2% with existing Porsches...

The mods are so extensive that it cannot be spoken of tuning, as much more is redesigned than is just improved, I fully understand the status of carmaker.

The body may look similar, the motor architecture follows the same principles, the interior too looks similar. However, the technic is totally bespoke on certain models of Ruf or 9ff, it's not just adding a pair of turbos.

Everything is new, from suspensions to motor and gearbox, on many models.

For instance the stunning Ruf RGT: looks like a 997 with a bodykit. Even the motor looks like one of the GT3, only bored out to 3.8l: high-revving, 445hp @7600 rpm.
In fact, it's based ont the crankcase of the 964, and everything else is Ruf specific... That is not tuning, that is car building almost from scratch!

Cool thing. Now tell them to design, engineer and construct their own cars from scratch. Like a proper manufacturer does. ;)

^^ Ruf CTR3 my friend.

Remotely resembles a Cayman, but it's a Ruf-designed car, and the chassis is a Ruf rear tube-frame structure...

Even CT3 uses the Porsche 3.8L engine as the base. But I guess that alone would have been okay, after all Zonda does use AMG engine or Konisegggggggggg a ford based engine. But it uses too many many Porsche body panels and parts to be RUF's own design. There is something about designing your own body that makes the car yours.
