M3/M4 [Reviews] BMW M3 Saloon & M4 Coupe

The BMW M3 is a high-performance version of the BMW 3 Series, developed by BMW's in-house motorsport division, BMW M GmbH. M3 models have been produced for every generation of 3 Series since the E30 M3 was introduced in 1986. The BMW M4 is a high-performance version of the BMW 4 Series automobile developed by BMW's motorsport division, BMW M, that has been built since 2014. As part of the renumbering that splits the coupé and convertible variants of the 3 Series into the 4 Series, the M4 replaced those variants of the BMW M3. Official website: BMW M

I don't think the ratings are comparable with other cars. This is a single car review and not comparison.

I've been having nasty thoughts these last 24 hours about what to replace my A1 with in September this year. I was all set for ordering the M135i when the facelift is launched imminently, but I just can't stop thinking about the M4. The one thing that has always been at the back of my mind though is the engine being an anti-climax compared with the E92 V8, and these first reviews seem to confirm my fears.

Anyway, I went to my local BMW dealer to discuss an order this afternoon and I'm in completely two minds about what to do. The M135i, with the M Performance exhaust (around €1,000) sounds wonderful. Better than the M4. I think the best way to sum it up is the M135i is 80% of the M4, for 50% of the price.

Maybe I'll wait until the Competition Package is launched or one of the numerous specials which will no doubt be launched in the next couple of years......

Wonder if the competition package will become available once the facelift arrives.

I think it will and there will be many other additions, including uprated engines. Just like the M5. It's been out a few years and we've already had a 575hp version and now a 600hp version.

So, three years in an M135i and then jump into a face lifted, competition pack M4 Coupe. Sounds like a plan.....

Here you go @martinbo

I think you might like the the first ten seconds of this video. Sutters doing what comes naturally in an F80 M3.

The last minute of this video sums up EXACTLY what I've been saying all along about the engine. It's the HEART of the M3 and this new one is lacking in that department according to Sutters.

5 star rating
Despite promising to be lighter and lower, the BMW M4 feels nearly identical to the M3 on which it’s based. It really didn’t need to improve on that formula anyway, though, since that car’s pin-sharp handling, monstrous engine and excellent everyday usability are second-to-none. But BMW expects to shift 1000 M4s a year and only 180 M3s and that’s got to be down to the M4’s gorgeous looks. It’s clearly not as practical but when it looks and feels as good as this, that doesn’t seem to matter.

5 star rating
Releasing a new BMW M3 always brings a huge weight of expectation with it, but this latest model more than rises to the occasion. The turbocharged engine signals a big change but it’s done nothing to dent the appeal of the M3 – it’s now blisteringly fast and more flexible than ever, with the only downside being it doesn’t quite sound as nice as the old V8. You can easily forgive it that, though, when it’s not only as comfortable and easy to drive as it is, but also when it’s this much fun.

That is not what rating means.

Lol. Don't take the literally. Go read som comparisons reviews by Evo and see if the ratings is the same as the single review. They have hundreds of single reviews, it's just impossible the ratings are comparable with other cars. I might be wrong but I doubt it.

I have been reading Evo reviews for many years already, I don't need to familiarise myself with the way that Evo reviews are done. If ratings aren't comparable then they aren't actually ratings at all and they are misleading and pointless.

The M5 got 4.5 stars so at least the M4 is consistent with that. Porsche Cayman GTS just got a 5.

Bottom line: I respect Evo's ratings above all other mags and the M135i wasn't worth a 5 star rating, in my opinion.

I doubt all these ratings are on an absolute scale. More probably a measure of expectations vs what was delivered. And I am sure the expectations of M3/4 is much higher than than what was expected of M135i.

Autocar just gave 918 a 4.5 and I am sure there is a hot hatch somewhere that got a 5 from them, but I doubt any of them will consider the hot hatch better in absolute terms.

I know it is not an absolute rank regardless of price, it is a rank relative to its similarly priced peers. How would you know what their expectations were?

^ I doubt it is even that at this point. I know they have had actual comparison tests where their rating differed from their previous rating for the same car(s).

Edit, just looked it up, even evo gave 918 a 4.5.

Betty, I say go with the M4! I have no idea what your financial situation is, but based on your current lineup, I'm sure you can afford it. With that said, that dang M4 is gonna turn heads everywhere you go! And I have no doubt you will have a blast driving it!

Just my 2 cents. Good luck with your decision!

The new M3 is a very good package for a daily driver, I like it. However, I have a feeling the new C63 will easily better the M3. Much more horsepower (476/510) from a proper V8, nicer interior on top of it...

For the new C63 to better the M3/M4 it should be on M3 GTS level of performance which I think is not happening.
The current C63 also had a lot more power than the M3 but it was enough to only get close to it.

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
