Our army of camera-wielding spy shot masters have managed to snag a few tasty photos of what appears to be the most advanced test mule of the expected Ferrari 612 Scaglietti successor that we've seen to date. As you may recall, rumors have cropped up that Ferrari is hard at work on a new shooting brake interpretation of the 612, and given the cladding slathered all over this particular vehicle, it would be easy to believe that the Prancing Horse pictured above is that very creation. Still, we have reason to believe that additional camouflage on this mule is covering up something a little more conventional – a 2+2 coupe bodystyle, though a rakish two-box shape may also be in the cards down the road.

A longer wheelbase is expected to help facilitate a little extra leg room, or possibly the components of a new Ferrari all-wheel drive system. There's also some thinking that points to the next 612 as packing a KERS-type system to help boost fuel economy and power off of the line. Either way, we'll find out more as we get closer to the Geneva Motor Show in March, where the 612 successor is expected to make its debut.

Maybe those spy shots are of the 612 Spaghetti's Shooting Break variant which is supposed to be showcased as a concept at an upcoming motorshow.

Never thought about that, but it could be looking at all the camo on the rear end.

Hmmm, it looks as though Ferrari is set to launch yet another caricature of an automobile. Like the 612 Scaglietti, exageratedly long hood giving the car a clowns' shoe appearance. Just my personal perception, mind you.

But in my opinion, Ferrari hasn't produced a truly elegant front engined 2+2 GT since the 456 GT of the early/mid 1990s'. It's all quite a shame when I think of those gloriously elegant and refined Ferrari GTs' of yore. The various 275, 330 and 365 GT cars. The splendid 500 Superfasts.

"Clown shoes":usa7uh:

Yes, I agree Ferrari hasn't produced any truly good looking cars since the 456 and if your memory goes back far enough, the 328GTS. It is probably due to the ever more stringent crash safety legislations and other considerations. To me, the last Ferrari that "looked fast standing still" was the 328GTS. It was the sloping A-pillar and sleek proportions that did it for me.

The test-mule definitely sports a new front-end with a new bumper and headlights. But the profile shot shows a similar A-pillar, roofline, and glasshouse to the current 612. The door handle is also the same as the current 612. Maybe this test-mule is just for climatic testing of the engine and the drivetrain.

I would be surprised if it turns out to be a shooting brake. Ferrari is never that adventurous. After the lukewarm reception of the 612, I think Ferrari and Pininfarina would be hell-bent on making a truly beautiful GT rather than something controversial and divide opinions.

Hmmm...the Swedish person in question who did this rendering is a huge Renault fan if you look at the front-end treatment:eusa_thin

Can you imagine a Ferrari wagon or a Ferrari sedan? :D
OMG!!
I even don't know that they were exist! I thought this was just a rebadge/modified sedan & wagon from past Korean manufacture, Daewoo??
They didn't look like Ferrari at all!

The GG50 also has something you might call a slightly unconventional rear:

Hmmm it makes sense now.., after seeing those mules now i can imagine that maybe the new 612 will be the new modern version of this GG50.. :eusa_thin
Pretty good actually!:D

The interior looks okay, but the biscuit colour is not the most flattering colour.

The Sat-Nav head unit (which was also used by some Chrysler models) is old and looks out of place with the surrounding. Ferrari should replace it with a newer one when the car is launched.

Some of the details are not that well-executed too. It might be a prototype, but the shape of the door trims and the location of the switches are set. Looking at the location of the mirror-adjustment toggle, I'd hate to have to adjust the mirrors. It's typical Italian ergonomics..............or the lack of ergonomics.

Why are they testing it..i thought they where bringing a hatchback concept to geneva to check reactions..
Have they actually green lighted a hatchback..
Ile just give up on ferrari if that is so..

PS
That interior looks very dated..

Yes, the instrument binnacle and the steering wheel aside, the interior design doesn't break any new grounds. It's very California - and that is not a compliment.

The only thing encouraging from these pictures is that Ferrari is now cold-weather testing their cars in Scandanavia.

Maserati had their GranTurismo camoflaged like that when they were testing it. So I doubt it is a hatchback.

For a second I thought they were releasing a special Thunderdome iteration of their 2+2. Ferrari Mad-Maxissmo, anybody? ;)

Can't tell much about the exterior except it'll have the classic long hood-short rear-deck classic GT proportions and that it'll have headlights derivative of the Italia. I'm fine with that on both counts.

The interior breaks zero new ground. I'm all for tradition but I was expecting some sort of modern/eccentric twist a la the Italia.

And the Arctic Circle testing....I feel comfortable that AWD is all but confirmed. Also, I can't remember of the top my head if the 612 is a hatchback but it sure looks like it's going that route with this one. The GG50 was certainly an inspiration. If Jag and Aston can pull it off, I'm sure Ferrari can too.
