I agree though, this time around it looks to be a photo finish. Judging by the levels of camo on both cars, it seems to be a matter of details in terms of how far development is done...

And the BMW testing has been way more open in the public. Because like 1.5 years ago we were openly wondering wether or not there would even be a new E class.

I suppose that Mrrcedes did the bigger part of the testing by computer simulations. It was not the usual development scheme.

The German car Magazin „AutoBild“ released this information about the upcoming e class today:
World premiere W214 19.04.2023, S214, 16.06.2023.
Deliveries starting W214 08.07.2023, S214, 15.09.2023.
Holy sh!t it is within a few months launching with the G60 5-series. Wow talking about a close launch. No time to benchmark each other lol

When is a new BMW 5 Series coming out?
The new BMW 5 Series (G60) sedan will start production in July 2023. We expect the first units to arrive at dealerships in late 2023. The BMW 5 Series (G61) touring will start production in March 2024. Expect first models to reach dealers in Summer 2024.

Why is this so surprising? Weren’t the last E and 5 released within months of each other just like the X5/ GLE?

@Mick Briesgau

New hint at an upcoming top-of-the-line Diesel for the W214.
I guess that we can deal with the same for the S-Class facelift.

This confirms the info giving to me at an AMG meet and greet back in July at the Merc VPC center in Long Beach. I was told by an AMG engineer from Germany that the E63 is dead. The W214 will offer only the E53 in an E Performance set-up with a modified M256 plus the hybrid drive from the W206 C63 and W223 S63.

Here is what I originally posted to MBWorld:

I attended the AMG engineer meet and greet event this morning at the Merc VPC in Long Beach. It was a small group of customers and main objective was for the German and American engineers to hear feedback from what we expect out of their push towards electrification.

There were an EQS, EQE, and EQE SUV (in disguise) on display along with a GT53.

My main goal was to hear about the future of the V8. All of the engineers were super passionate about their jobs and really love the AMG brand.

I was able to confirm some bad news from one of the German engineers …straight from the horses mouth …regarding the W214 E63. There won’t be one ..the E53 will will be the highest spec with the M256 paired with the same plug-in e drive hybrid set up from the C63 (prob around 650 HP). He mentioned reduction in CO2 is of the highest concern and even the engineers in Affalterbach too were surprised by this decision. The CLE is also getting this set up and not the C63 set up. So there you have it …the 213/205 are the last C/E with a V8.

The V8 will live as long as possible and he mentioned if there is still demand outside of the EU then they will consider continuing production.

We also talked about the one man one engine moving forward. They are trying to retain this tradition some how with EV’s. Apparently, Affalterbach will have some battery production, thus, some components may be hand built. They’re still trying to work this out.

Summary of future models we talked about:
S63e M177 + Plug-In Hybrid
SL63e M177 + Plug-In Hybrid
SL53e M139 + Plug-In Hybrid
E53e M256 + Plug-In Hybrid
CLE53e M256 + Plug-In Hybrid
GLC63e M139 + Plug-In Hybrid

The V8’s are now reserved for the top tier range…S, SL, G, etc. The SL55/63 are going to be the last non electrified AMG’s with the M177 ever.

That is some eye opening reading right there. If true, then a CLE53 or E53 will be the ticket. Particularly a CLE53 Cabriolet. A 4-cylinder SL53 is just sad. Would have been been a perfect SL53 with NO E hybrid nonsense on it. Just upgrade the existing EQ I6 power combo.

They should substitute 53 with 55 - costs them nothing and they’ll have a far more evocative moniker, sufficiently distinct from the other AMG two-numeral badges.

Well, the decision on focusing to CO2 reduction is very understandable and, far more intelligent than electric only.
I'm sure, that we lucky guys here who are able to spend much money for a car, should not have the right to ignore the fuel saving factor.
So any concept, including AMG of course, which reduces CO2 in real driving conditions, is very welcome.

So, yes, V8 should be dead. And, unfortunately enough, the time of cylinders and valves will fade out definetely.

How come Mercedes is the only one with this V8 problem in their line-up but not other manufacturers ?

Why is this so surprising? Weren’t the last E and 5 released within months of each other just like the X5/ GLE?
The W213 E-class was launched in Jan 2016 at North American Auto Show (Detroit) and production started in summer 2016, while the G30 5-series was first revealed in Oct 2016 and then shown first to public in Jan 2017 at North American Auto Show (Detroit) and production started in Mar 2017.

So a gap of approx. 9 months between both models.

I'm wondering if they sell too many v8's compared to rivals and not enough eco models, that they receive EU carbon penalties? I mean, they sold 40k G classes last year alone, which other manufacturer sold that many high power, high emission engines?

They should change name from E53 to E55 if they're gonna whack the E63.

And the S-Class V8 that will be at least 30,000 to 40,000 more?
