A4/S4/RS4 [Renders] MY2019 Audi A4 Facelift

This gen A4 is selling way less than both the 3 series and C-class in most markets. I definitely think the too conservative approach on the styling front has made the car date quicker, it needs an extensive makeup both front and rear to make it competitive again, especially now that a new 3 series is around the corner it's got even more of a harder job to do to attract customers again
I always think it’s walking on a thin line, if you’re applying extensive changes to the front and rear. Often tends to compromise the whole design as such.

Luckily looking at history Audi have done some very successful extensive facelifts on some models such as the 2004 Audi A4 B7 FL which totally transformed the front and rear lights and improved the looks of the B6

Spyshots: 2020 Audi A4 Starts Testing Its Facelift, Getting New TDI Engine

Audi has completely redesigned its big car family in the past year, so it's now time to facelift the A4 range. Our German spies captured the first of what's likely to be many images.

Sadly, the A4 won't copy the headlight design of the A6. It's stuck with those controversial units, which look like geometric apostrophes. Naturally, the graphics could receive some changes. But this early prototype doesn't reveal too many secrets.

The front bumper is, however, getting redesigned. We can see the grille, spoiler and the elements right below the headlights have evolved. While those look like a couple of speakers, they are actually the scanners for the ACCadaptive cruise control and active safety systems.

We're not entirely sure what's going on around the back. But the diffuser element with integrated exhaust tips (might or might not be fake) probably belongs to the A4 allroad quatto. The height of the suspension also supports this, but the rest of the body kit is wrong.

New engines? Well, we should see the mild hybrid technology from the bigger A6, A7 and A8 migrating to this executive compact. The technology saves up to 5% more fuel through a coasting function. That's on top of the ultra de-coupling AWD technology and whatever else Audi has planned.

The new EA288 Evo TDI engine has already been confirmed for the A4. This 2-liter offers between 136 and 204 horsepower. By using a 48V mild-hybrid setup, this lowers CO2 emissions by up to 10 g/km compared with the predecessor generation. Meanwhile, the power and torque numbers are increased by up to 9%. For example, the best A4 2.0 TDI currently makes 190 HP.

As diesel refuses to die in Europe, the A4 facelift is likely to receive the 286 HP version of the 3.0 TDI. We expect all these changes to also affect the A5 range about a year after the sedan and wagon.

The A4 facelift is back, and this time, it takes the form of a sedan. Thankfully, all the details that were missing in our previous spyshots are coming together to form a complete picture.

The big one is the exhaust. Most Audi A4 model has always had one or two exhaust tips on the left side of the car. Some say it's a classy and honest way of designing a car, but people paying to dollar or euro want some symmetry.

That's why this facelifted A4 will have a fake pipe on the right copying the muffler tip on the left. Of course, it doesn't need to be that big, but that's there to give the car an air of sportiness.

The bumper has also been redesigned for the facelift, with a long strip of honeycombed plastic making its way back there. For now, the taillights don't look different, but let's give it some time.

At the front, we've already talked about how the new surrounds of the radar system look like speakers. This is probably the design for the S Line body kit. And we're not saying that because of the badges on the sides, but because it mirrors the Q5 S Line to a degree.

Inside, the A4 might get a technology infusion from the A6, A7, and A8. However, the overall layout will stay the same, since the infotainment is still perched on top of the dashboard.

From what the German media is reporting, it looks like some engine versions of the A4 will be cut, such as the 3.0 TDI with 218 HP. At the same time, there might be more g-tron models running on natural gas and even an A4 e-tron, delivering around 252 HP from a mix of 2-liter engine and 115 HP e-motor.

Audi also hopes to power CO2 emissions with 12- and 48-volt hybrid systems while adding particle filters to every powertrain, including TFSI. Expect to see this facelift early in 2019.

I always think it’s walking on a thin line, if you’re applying extensive changes to the front and rear. Often tends to compromise the whole design as such.

You're very right, but the A4 is much bigger problems than the front and rear visuals. The whole 'backbone' is wrong, which is something that cannot ever be changed by a facelift.

The car looks like a facelift of a B5 A4. Pretty horrible.

This is the facelift the thread meant to discuss. Who knew Audi was going to do a small one in the middle haha.

The new gen was pushed back two year as Audi doesn’t have the funds as planned. The facelift will therefore be more extensive but still less costly as a new gen obviously.

The wrath of Diesel-gate, I presume?

The wrath of Diesel-gate, I presume?

Certainly a factor.

Also, Audi finds itself in the midst of the highly significant, highly cost and time consuming BEV development process. "Vorsprung durch Technik" is in dire need of reinvention. Once the VAG flagship subsidiary, Audi has become subjected to a, for the most part self-inflicted, malaise. And while most recent product introductions such as the new A6 and A7 are being received quite well (in their home market in any case), they are arguably stop-gap solutions in the scheme of the companys' "big picture" future.

The eTron Quattro + derivatives will be an immensely crucial product for Audi.

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
