That doesn't make sense. The Superb looks very different from the Passat. If anything, the Superb is more intriguing to look at. Coupled with its generous cabin and stellar price, you'd need to be a badge snob to overlook it for a Passat.

It looks like there is no CD player in the MY2018 Mazda 6. Same thing happens with the new Toyota Camry. What gives?

You’re right. That’s exactly the point I wanted to make. Skoda is taking sales away from the Passat. That’s why they want to differentiate it (Passat) more and make it better looking.

They need a sexy up the interior too as VW and Skoda interiors are too alike. I am a fan of the Arteon and would be happy to see its exterior design applied to the Passat.

My 2017 MB W205 has it.

A car isn't exactly a place where you can do critical listening, at home is far better. Hi res MP3's from your phone or USB stick are more than good enough, I doubt many if really any people would be able to tell the difference in a car at motorway speeds between CD and MP3.

Volkswagen Passat Facelift Coming in 2018 With Arteon Styling
The Volkswagen Passat has done what many said wouldn't happen, revitalizing the mid-size sedan segment in Europe. This has happened by offering attractive features similar to premium cars, but for slightly less money.

We fondly remember testing the 240 horsepower diesel version and €10,000 worth of features. But interior lighting can't disguise the age of the car. As such, Volkswagen is preparing to launch a mid-life facelift.

According to German magazine Auto Bild. The Passat facelift will be revealed next summer and go on sale in the fall. That means we could start seeing some camouflaged prototypes.

The previous Passat didn't have a facelift. In fact, most Volkswagen cars didn't at the time. But we've seen with the Golf 7.5 that the designers know how to extend the shelf life of a car.

The proposed styling changes can be seen in the video below. They follow the example set by the Arteon and include a bolder grille and headlight assembly. However, it won't be as sporty as the four-door coupe with which it shares its platform.

The technology package will be massively updated with semi-autonomous tech and a new infotainment system grabbing all the attention. Better phone integration, a wireless charging pad, gesture controls and a head-up display might convince the current Passat owner to trade in for the newer model. The dashboard will surely have fewer buttons as well.

The Passat still sets the segment benchmark, but it will update to the new 1.5 TSI engine from the Golf 7.5. In the base spec, this will produce 130 HP (up from 125 HP), followed by the 150 HP version starting with the Comfortline trim.

There's also a BlueMotion mild hybrid version that could replace the 1.6 TDI in the future. As for the rest of the engine range, we will bee the 1.8 TSI replaced by the 2.0 TSI with 190 HP.

Hope that render is not accurate... the face now resembles the ugly Mondeo/Fusion.

Autozeitung info:

- New 1.5L I4 Turbo with 150hp, also as CNG variant
- 2.0L I4 Turbo "EA288evo" for gas
- New diesel with 136hp to 204hp
- 48 v mild hybrid coming

Redesigned 2019 VW Passat Shows Arteon-Inspired Front End In China (Updated)

While the European 2019 Passat is still a few months away from its official introduction, in China, Volkswagen and partner company SAIC have prepared the redesigned 2019 Passat NMS.

Despite some similarities with the European iteration, this model believed to be (or at least related to) the global Passat NMS, which is also sold in the United States. However, it’s too early to say if the North American version will benefit from the same design updates, or if the manufacturer is planning something different.

The D-segment sedan looks to be inspired by both the Arteon and the China-only Lavida. Notice the larger grille that dips into the front bumper, similar LED headlamps, reworked taillights and rear bumper. It also gets the ‘Passat’ lettering on the boot lid, right under the ‘VW’ logo.
At 4,993mm (196.6in) long, 1,836mm (72.3in) wide, and 1,469mm (57.8in) tall, the car has a larger footprint compared to the North American iteration. Its wheelbase is longer, too, at 2,871mm (113in).

Made in China, for China, by the Shanghai-Volkswagen (SAIC) joint venture, this Volkswagen Passat will launch with two engines options: a 186hp or 220hp turbocharged 2.0-liter unit, although a plug-in hybrid derivative is said to come in the near future. Pricing should start at around 210,000 yuan ($32,612) locally when it goes on sale this fall.

What about the (unrelated) European model?
In Europe, the 2019 Volkswagen Passat will continue to battle it out with the Renault Talisman, Ford Mondeo, Peugeot 508 and Opel/Vauxhall Insignia, among others. The German manufacturer will likely pull the covers off in the coming months, while also revealing some engine upgrades. A new turbo’d V6 lump could power the flagship R version, whereas the GTE PHEV might offer an improved zero-emissions range.

North America, on the other hand, will welcome a new Passat next year. The announcement was made during the 2018 Detroit Auto Show by the company’s chief, Dr. Herbert Diess, who also confirmed new products, including battery-powered models.

Facelifted Euro-Spec VW Passat Getting New-And-Improved Powertrains

Passat in 2019 and according to Auto Express, it will receive a plethora of new technologies, including updated powertrains.

One of the most significant changes will be the inclusion of additional plug-in hybrid models across the range. Currently, those looking for a hybrid Passat are forced to purchase the top-spec GTE trim.

In the new model, the plug-in hybrid powertrain will be offered across the rest of the range without forcing customers to dig too deep into their bank accounts.

The existing powertrain consists of a 1.4-liter turbo four with 154 hp and a 114 hp electric motor. Volkswagen will equip the hybrid Passat models with a 13 kWh battery to deliver roughly 44 miles (70 km) of all-electric range. This enlarged battery will also reduce the car’s CO2 emissions down to 36g/km.

Alongside the hybrid system, the current 1.4-liter turbo used by the Passat will be replaced by a new 1.5-liter engine. Modifications will also be made to the remaining petrol and diesel engines to improve efficiency.

A host of styling changes will help the new Passat stand out from its predecessor. For example, the front fascia will adopt a revised lower section, different air intakes and a tweaked grille, while redesigned taillights will probably be on the menu, too.

Inside, limited changes are expected, as the current Passat already shares much of its cabin with the premium Arteon.

Your Next Euro VW Passat Could Be Built By Skoda

If the reports are accurate, the midsize sedan will be made alongside the Superb in the Czech Republic.
As we’re sure you have heard by now, the EV invasion from Volkswagen is upon us. In order to prepare for an armada of zero-emissions vehicles, the folks from Wolfsburg need to reshuffle car production to free up capacity and optimize output as much as possible. This is expected to have an impact on conventional cars powered by combustion engines, with VW announcing just yesterday to turn the Emden and Hanover facilities into electric vehicle plants by 2022.

According to a report published by Handelsblatt, assembly of the once hugely important Passat will allegedly be moved to the Czech Republic and Skoda will be tasked to put together the midsize sedan. While that might upset those who value the “Made in Germany” label, it’s a business decision that would make sense considering the Passat would be built at the same factory as the heavily related Superb.

Arteon.

As pointed out by Automotive News, sales of the Passat has greatly decreased as a consequence of the SUV boom. Market researchers JATO Dynamics say demand for the model dropped by 5.6 percent to 127,325 units through the first nine months of the year.

Updated Euro Passat is coming:
Moving production of the Passat from Emden to the Kvasiny plant won’t be easy since Skoda’s two Czech factories are already operating at almost 100-percent capacity. Handelsblatt reports the more attainable brand of the VW Group is analyzing the prospects of building a third factory in Europe, with Bulgaria and Turkey on the list of possible locations.

Interestingly, while Passat production might eventually be moved to the Czech Republic, the Skoda Karoq (built in Kvasiny and Mladá Boleslav) is also going to be made in Osnabrück, Germany beginning with the end of the year and through 2019. Skoda can’t keep up with demand for the compact crossover and needs to expand production to a third factory. It’s the place where VW assembles the Tiguan and will kick off T-Roc Convertible production in 2020.

VW Passat B8 Facelift Spied Winter Testing With New Face and Taillights

The Passat mid-life facelift, also described by some as the Passat 8.5, was supposed to debut towards the end of 2018 according to internal documents. However, Volkswagen is only now putting the prototypes to work with some winter testing.

The B8 is, in our opinion, the model that revitalized the mid-size sedan segment in Europe, with its premium car features. Having driven several versions, the autoevolution team can tell you that it's not perfect, yet things like driver enjoyment are probably not at the top of VW's list of priorities.

Changing the way the Passat B8, meanwhile, is. For starters, the front end is getting a makeover that's bigger than the one received by the Golf. You have headlights with a chopped inner section connecting to a new grille. Weirdly, it all looks like the 2019 Jetta, even though the two models never meet in either European or American showrooms.

As for the rest of the bumper, we seem to have a bigger "mouth" at the bottom, stretching to sporty-looking fog lights. This could be the R-Line body kit. Meanwhile, the taillights appear to be slightly narrower, which is probably not the case, while the graphics are less pixelated and mirror the new Touareg SUV. No surprises there!

The Passat facelift was probably delayed by all the engine testing VW had to do for WLTP. However, as we published in a recent story, you can already buy a Passat with the 1.5 TSI instead of the 1.4 TSI it came out with. We suspect further changes will include the BlueMotion 1.6 TDI being replaced by either a 130 HP mild-hybrid 1.5 TSI or a new 1.5 TSI.

While the 2.0 TDI will continue to form the bulk of European sales, it's going to get a new 7-speed DSG gearbox and a more competition from the 2.0 TSI with 190 horsepower and that frugal combustion cycle. Also, for those who mainly do city miles, there will be a 1.5 plug-in system offered not on the Passat GTE but as a normal engine available in the two top trim levels.

The 2020 Passat, however, doesn’t hold many surprises.

Unlike the slew of new VWs to hit American roads over the last few years, it doesn’t take advantage of the automaker’s modular structure called MQB. The new Passat really isn’t all that new. Its bones are shared with the outgoing model, which hit the market for the 2011 model year nearly a decade ago.

2020 Volkswagen Passat prototype first drive - December 2018

There’s good news, though. The outgoing Passat is light on personality, but not on refinement. It’s quiet, spacious, priced competitively, and has earned good scores in crash tests. The new model isn’t likely to change any of that.

In the dozen or so miles I drove on terrain ranging from loose gravel to a 114-mph sprint on a banked curve to an undulating paved surface inspired by the world’s worst roads, the 2020 Passat felt unphased. Its 2.0-liter turbo-4 elicited a mellow, distant thrum into the cabin even at triple-digit speeds. The 6-speed automatic shifted smoothly, a pleasant contrast against rivals that do less with more gears.

Last year, VW quietly snuck the latest version of its 2.0-liter turbo-4 under the Passat’s hood. A version of that engine returns as the sole option, boasting the same 174 horsepower as last year and 207 pound-feet of torque (up from 184 lb-ft). In my limited drive time in Arizona, the Passat seemed to accelerate briskly from a stop. VW estimated its curb weight won’t change much over last year’s roughly 3,300-pound figure, so the added torque is nothing to shrug at.

The Passat’s on-again, off-again relationship with VW’s V-6 engine is once again on hold, the automaker said.
