Mercedes has been doing huge grilles for well over a decade. 2007 GL550:

I remember how over-the-top the GL550 looked when it first came out with the AMG 21" wheels and the enlarged grille. I believe the star was about 10 inches compared to the 450's 7.

It was a U.S market-only counterpunch to the Escalade, which the GL450 already dominated in sales.

I do wonder if they're going to differentiate the interiors a bit more this time. It would be nice if there was differentiation to drive the E vs. S point home.

Absolutely, if they are calling it as GL'S' then it should be a real S-class of SUVs, or else I would have recommended to retain it as GL & introduce a superior model named as GLS

Not convinced this won't be just another stretched GLE. Which would be a big shame. Why wouldn't they though? They can't make enough of the current GLS's and that's all they are meaning much higher margins.

When comparing spy shots from similar stages with regard to front box length, wheel arches, front door, door handles etc. I get the impression that there is a common basis. Probably, it's more or less the same kind of derivate as the X7.

I really hope Mercedes pulls this off right, because after seeing the horrid and downright repulsive tragedy over in Bavaria, competition should be pretty light.

Looks like the DRL are turned inward like the next gen GLE which might mean it will have a very large inverted grill.
