GLS [Renders] 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLS (GL successor)

The Mercedes-Benz GLS, formerly Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, is a full-size luxury crossover SUV produced by Mercedes-Benz since 2006. The GLS is considered the flagship of the marque's SUV lineup, although the body-on-frame G-Class (originally intended for military off-roading but also offered in luxurious trims) is more expensive and has been in production longer.

Look at the previous spy shot below and you'll see it's the same GL formula continuing - same dimensions from the front to the rear doors.

What exactly are you implying here? The current GLS has a longer wheelbase and longer rear doors than the GLE.

The next GLS just is this big. I don't think what we've seen is a "Maybach" or extended version.
If we were, by now we would have seen another to compare to. Instead all we have is this one.

The fact is the GLS needed to grow. The front and 2nd row dimensions were exactly the same as the GLE. The SUV market is going bonkers and the GLS has an opportunity to pick up market share it is loosing to Caddy, Infiniti and others because it is undersized.

Now this I can agree with. While the room was the same for front and 2nd row, the rear doors are longer to aid 3rd row entry/exit.

I like seeing MB geting more expresseive with wheel designs as of late. In the past, MB wheel selection has been noticably weak compared to BMW & Audi.

Interesting- I haven't felt that way at all. That's exactly what I would've said about Audi.

I guess it's me seeing the same standard 5 single or double-spoke AMG-pack wheels over the years.

I really liked the multispokes when the W222 introduced them, but every single MB has it as an option now. So it looks tired, imo.

There are very few MB wheel designs that I like. It's hard to quantify what makes a good one, but a more open design, symmetry, some brightwork, and a forward-propelling design works for me.

Exactly, it seems like MB designers have forgotten to pay attention to the wheel design.

MB used to have uniquely designed wheels for each model range, including the AMG wheels, but now they use the same two or three design across the range, thankfully they gave the Maybach range its own unique wheel design.

When was that? Most wheel designs have been shared with at least one other model since I was born. I haven’t see a change: one group of wheels that can be seen on a multitude of models, another across different body styles of the same model.

Frontlights, shoulder line and rearlights appear to be very similar to the GLE ones.

New Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 Spied Masking Panamericana Grille

The current model has 577 horsepower, but its replacement could easily surpass the 600-hp mark.
It was only yesterday when the next-generation GLS was spotted roaming the streets of Germany and now our spies have sent us a batch of images with a more interesting prototype. Caught undergoing testing in a much colder environment, the fully camouflaged luxobarge had the now familiar disguise at the front grille in a grid pattern. That can only mean one thing: behind it was the menacing Panamericana grille reserved to the hottest AMG models.

This leads us to believe the test vehicle in question was the GLS 63 also taking into account it had bigger wheels backed by beefier tires. Yes, it did not have the typical AMG quad exhaust tips, but bear in mind this is an early prototype without all of the final bits and pieces. Another clue that could reveal the true identity of the large SUV is the bulging front and rear fenders as part of a more aggressive bodywork reserved for the performance-oriented GLS.

In regards to what will power it, our money is on a biturbo 4.0-liter V8 currently available in a plethora of AMG products. While the current GLS 63 has the old 5.5-liter V8 with 577 horsepower on tap, its replacement with the newer engine could have more than 600 hp. The engineers from Affalterbach have managed to extract a whopping 630 hp from the 4.0-liter unit for the new GT 4-Door Coupe, but it doesn’t necessarily mean the next GLS 63 will have the same amount of power. Nevertheless, a significant bump over the outgoing version is expected.

The next generation of the largest SUV from Mercedes will be faster not only thanks to its newly gained muscle, but also because it will switch to a different platform bringing a considerable weight loss. Needless to say, the diet will also pay dividends in terms of efficiency and should also free up more space inside the already cavernous cabin as a result of more optimized packaging.

Considering the regular GLS won’t be out until either the end of the year or early 2019, the spicy AMG-ified 63 derivative is not due to go on sale before 2020.

I really hope they are planning a 65 version with the new 700hp V12 along a MM version to totally dominate that segment.

As much as I don’t wanna believe that, it rings true logically. Though I just can’t see Mercedes not doing a V12 in this thing when Bentley, Rolls and possibly BMW will/might feature one.
