2019 Audi A6 spied for the first time

After the new A8 and A7, time has come for the next A6 to pose for the spy camera.
Audi’s design boss Marc Lichte has promised a greater differentiation among models and it seems he’s living up to the promise. The next-gen A8 due to come out later this year will herald a new design language for the Ingolstadt brand and is going to be followed by the sexy A7 Sportback and by this, the all-new A6. All three of them have been captured disguised as prototypes as demonstrated in the trio of spy shots below:

Despite the heavy amount of camouflage, it’s already noticeable the A6, A7, and A8 will be visually distinguishable from the front thanks to their differently shaped headlights. In the case of the A6, an upper character line that sits right below the window line will further set it apart from the other two luxobarges. While the outgoing A6 has the side mirrors sitting next to the A-pillars, the new one will host them lower on the doors.

Images of the A6’s derriere are not available at this point, but from what we are able to see in the adjacent pics, it’s getting a slightly shorter rear end with a smaller overhang. Speaking of which, the front overhang also appears to be a tad shorter. These changes will lend the midsize sedan a sportier appearance as previewed by the gorgeous Prologue concept.

As far as the interior cabin is concerned, expect Audi’s second generation of the Virtual Cockpit premiering this year in the A8 to trickle down to the A6 and we won’t be too surprised if the swanky all-digital instrument cluster will be standard equipment. Although not visible in the attached imagery, better repackaging brought by the new platform could bring extra rear legroom after stretching the wheelbase a bit.

Since we’ve mentioned platform, the next-gen A6 along with its bigger brothers will ride on the MLB Evo set to enable a healthy weight loss that will pay dividends in terms of performance and efficiency. A larger trunk is also on the agenda for the midsize sedan, while those in need of more cargo capacity will have to wait for the A6 Avant (speculatively rendered above) due probably within a year after the sedan's launch with a design teased by the sleek Prologue Avant concept.

First on Audi’s agenda is the A8 likely to arrive in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show, with the A7 and A6 scheduled to go official next year.

It kind of stinks that the lights were projected to be very slim based on the renders and Prologue concept, but the spy shots show that not to be the case.

Lol, it is true the Prologue influence can be seen on the side profile, but the slimmer lights the concept promissed are nowhere to be found. Those frontlights look massive.

It's amazing the little following Audi has now on this forum, where's Tumbo ?

I know. It's rather odd really. There is such little discussion in the Audi forum and little enthusiasm for their launches. For example, the SQ5 has a strong market following, but the interest on here has been non existent. Audi also likely has a younger buyer demographic than both MB and BMW, so it doesn't really add up.

Products are nice & good but the brand (cache, image etc) is still not on par with BMW, MB, Porsche, even Jaguar, Land Rover etc. Have you ever heard of Audi enthusiasts? :D

Also, Audi is too much influenced by VAG corporate policies. It's not a leading brand within a Group, like MB, BMW, Jaguar etc are. It's a curse of playing a second (or even a third) fiddle.

IMHO Audi products are a great value for money but the brand itself still lacks emotions, enthusiasm. It's still too much VW-ish, and too little Porsche-ish. And that's VAG's corporate decision.

Quattro - once a key feature & selling point of Audi - is now reduced to "just another AWD system". Everybody offers an AWD now. And with EV era the system will become standard.

Vorsprung durch Technik ... What has Audi done recently? Anything technically spectacular or groundbreaking? Nope. They are obsessed with developing advanced lighting systems. And even there some have done the same or even better job (MB, Opel, even BMW with LaserLights & OLEDs).

IMHO right now Tesla, BMW, MB, Volvo & Toyota are waaaaay ahead of Audi when it comes to Vorsprung durch Technik. Quite ironic & even embarrassing.

It's not Audi's fault per se ... They are just a victim, a captive of VAG's corporate policies. Audi is just "one of the many" brands & divisions in portfolio. And R&D is getting more & more centralized within VAG, and some products & brands still have priority within the group.

So, despite offering good products, the Audi brand is becoming more & more "Meh!", and even more "Meh!" as a company (Audi AG). Pity.

Very interesting take @EnI.

Isn't it rumoured the next A8 is going to be a technological masterpiece to shame both the 7 and S? Perhaps this will restablish the Vorsprung Durch Technic.

There are also a lot of minor details on vehicles such as the new A4 which try to convey technological progress to customers such as virtual cockpit and LED strips in the trim that flash if you open to door and risk knocking out a pedestrian.

The problem with A8 is that it's coming late. S-class facelift is around the corner, featuring new stuff that will be on par with A8. Same case with 7er: BMW is adding new stuff every new MY (eg. 7er getting some stuff premiered in 5er etc). Rivals are catching up.

Virtual cockpit ... we have seen that before A4. And right now it's featured also in lower class cars like just facelifted VW Golf , Peugeot 3008 crossover etc etc.

Times when Audi pioneered Quattro, or ASF, or matrix LED headlights ets are over.

Sure A8 will come with some new innovative features but the tech won't be as groundbreaking as was initially meant to be. Eg. 2 years ago when some info came out about the new A8 some stuff sounded like sci-fi. But it's hardly groundbreaking in 2017. Sure they innovate but new Audi stuff aren't as special as they once were.

Saying that ... Audi brand is still VERY prestigious; and Audi products are still excellent. Yet the innovation spirit once associated with the brand isn't there anymore. At least not in real life. Although the slogan is staying the same.

What's interesting, typicaly Audis Camoed cars have production lights already on them but under cameo. This is the first one I saw with some weird old mitsubishi lancer look-a-like's. Even the new Q8 already has it's production lights, the same with A8 and A7, from the very first pics we saw the production ready cars under cameo.

These headlights look like an absolute disaster to me, the grille is crazy overstyled and the overall proportions are like a Passat or Skoda.

I have little hope for the final product, but we'll see.

Catching up with cars that don't exist, yeah :D

Be glad, this hype of tiny lights on huge cars is about to die. Like black rims.

This site is full of BMW fanboys who critise anything Audi does, so why should Audi owners bother posting here, ban Klier for good and some might turn up.

After owning BMW and Mercedes products I bought an A1 Sportback then an A6 Avant, it would have to be an exceptional BMW or Mercedes to get me back. My A6 Avant just feels right, it's comfy, economic and still IMO a better looking car then the lastest BMW and Mercedes estates, they haven't moved the game on. Although Volvo has hit a home run with the V90, the next Avant is going to have to be exceptional to better it.

I can say that Audi is above BMW in terms of interior quality and attention to details.

Mercedes is cutting cost like crazy, I think they use some entry level smartphone processor for command system in the new E-Class and they so got so cheap that they don't even bother covering the trunk ceiling with some fabric, even in their flagship S-Coupe which I'm considering buying.
And the large digital cluster is more economical to produce than BMW or Audi style, everything is integrated in that screen, AC info is shown there, not separate like in BMW or Audi.

I drive an A8 D4 for over 3 years and the car is bullet proof, solid fit and finish and best ergonomics.

However they keep missing the right exterior design, I don't know what's going on with their designers, otherwise it would be my favorite among the three.

Current A6 still looks good and the new one might surprise us. But I hope they will hit the right notes with the upcoming A8.

Yeah I was talking more about the rear lights, the're like nothing audi uses on it's camoed cars, wonder why the a6's rear lights are so secret, yet the a8, q8 and a7 were not

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
