"Isn't the next cayenne supposed to be more crossover than SUV?"
Indeed.
Mind that a near future will bring a completely new vehicle segment: a SAC segment. SAC = Sport Activity Coupe.
SAC is a crossover between a SAV and a coupe sports car. Much lower than current SAVs, but still quite high seating position compared to regular cars / sport coupes. SAC appearence will be very coupeish, very sporty compared to SAVs.
BMW are working on their interpretation of SAC which will come out as X6 in 2008 (also smaller X4 is possible later in the future).
Porsche Cayenne Mk2 will follow the SAC formula, not the SAV one anymore - since the SAC fits better in the Porsche portfolio than regular SAV.
Also the next Infiniti FX will be even more coupeish, and will fit SAC segment perfectly.
Also other brands are moving towards SAC segment rapidly: remember the original VW Concept A showcar? And Hyundai HCD-9 Talus concept?
Also there are rumours MB are working on thier SAC interpretation (MLC or GLC perhaps?). Not to mention Audi have already registered the Q6 name in Germany.
This is Cayenne Mk2.
I posted this on CSS in August, 2006:
I just want to add some words to support my arguments: Audi Cross Coupe Quattro Concept is a clear eveidence Audi are looking into SAC segment as well. Entering either with direct X6 rival, or perhaps a segment lower (EX & upcoming X4 fighter). Also the new Mk2 FX is indeed more coupeish & sporty - fitting more in SAC than SAV segment.
Tracing the rumor-paved path of the ‘baby’ Porsche Cayenne is tricky. The vehicle has been confirmed and denied on multiple occasions so whether or not Porsche is actually building a new SUV smaller than the Cayenne is anyone’s guess.
According to a new report, Porsche has ruled out building a new SUV positioned below the Cayenne because of fears that it would steal sales away from its bigger brother.
The information comes from a company insider who revealed to Autocar that Audi is experiencing this problem with its Q5 and Q7 SUVs and if the same happened to the Cayenne it could be disastrous for Porsche’s bottom line. The Cayenne accounts for almost half of Porsche’s profit and with the new 2011 Cayenne set to be launched in the coming months, sales of the performance SUV are now more crucial than ever.
While we’re unlikely to see a new Porsche SUV, at least in the foreseeable future, there is a chance that the sports car company may add a fifth model line in the form of a new entry-level roadster. If it does come, the new roadster would slot in below the Boxster and share a platform with similar models from Volkswagen and Audi.
If that sounds a lot like the Porsche 914 to you, that's because it is, in a way. It has also been seen as a revival of the 356, though it would be in spirit only. But whatever it is, it's at least under serious consideration at Porsche.
LeftLaneNews said:Porsche Says 'no' to Smaller Cayenne
Reports of a sub-Cayenne ‘Roxster’ model have been circling the internet rumor mill for some time now, but Porsche says it has no plans to launch a baby SUV model. Porsche canned the Roxster project in order to put a greater focus on the strong-selling Cayenne.

I hope it's true, there's no reason for Porsche to make this car.
"Roxster" sounds like a name an elementary grade school kid came up with when he drew a picture of his fantasy Porsche.
I hope it's true, there's no reason for Porsche to make this car.
It will be interesting to see if Porsche actually decision to downsize on their SUV project, the only reason why I question this is that the Q5 has stolen quite a big of the sales that originally went to the Q7. Now while you may feel that at least this means that buyers aren't going else where for their SUVs it still means that proportionally Audi are making less profit per switch from Q7 to Q5.
Though there is little doubt there is a better place than to use the Q5 platform to base a future Porsche SUV on, given the marked improvement on handling and more importantly feel that the Q5 has over the Q7, one must assume that Porsche could also make the same inroads compared to the Cayenne.
I think Roxster is more pleased to hear..Porsche Baby Cayenne: Forget Roxster, will be named Porsche Cajun!

Baby Cayenne will not be called Porsche Roxster: the most likely name will be Porsche Cajun!
The name was revealed during an interview of Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Volkswagen’s CEO, with the German “Spiegel”.
Google translated: “On some issues we feel that there “were more financial issues at the center of attention as the product, the car” during the takeover battle with VW. VW wants to “bring more to radiate” the Porsche brand. There will be an additional model, called a new SUV, a little brother for the Cayenne, the Cajun could, “said Winterkorn.”
