Panamera Porsche Panamera Variants Coming Soon (Hybrid, V6, Diesel, GTS)

The Porsche Panamera is a mid to full-sized luxury car (E-segment or F-segment for LWB in Europe) manufactured and marketed by Porsche. The Panamera name, as with the Carrera name, is derived from the Carrera Panamericana race.

The past couple of months has seen a blitz of stories about the new Porsche Panamera, such as its dramatic 94th story reveal in a Shanghai skyscraper and its official world debut. For now, the four-door Porsche will only be offered in various V8-engined guises, but more economical engines are expected to be arriving soon - including a hybrid model. Currently, Porsche has a Cayenne SUV prototype that uses a 3.0L V6 hybrid engine sourced from Audi, and it wouldn't be surprising if this engine found its way into the Panamera for the more environmentally conscious Porsche buyers out there. Speaking with the Associated Press, Porsche executive board member Michael Macht confirmed that there will be a Cayenne hybrid next year and a “Panamera hybrid soon after."

Porsche purists may balk at the idea, but there is also expected to be a conventional V6 engine for the new Panamera - in other words, Porsche's famed flat-six won't likely be making an appearance in the new four-seater model. Porsche's head of research and development, Wolfgang Durheimer, has previously explained that the flat-six engine doesn't fit in the front of the Panamera because of the particular shape of the engine bay, as well as the fact that the suspension would get in the way.A V6-engined variant will certainly bring down the cost of the cheapest Porsche Panamera, which for now resides with the Panamera S that starts at a little under $90,000. Assuming a petrol-powered V6 becomes the entry-level model, with conventional suspension rather than Porsche's air suspension system, we could see the Panamera drop a large amount of that $90,000 price tag.

Porsche has already confirmed that it will offer a hybrid version of the Panamera after the gasoline Panameras make their market debut later this year (no official date on when the hybrid Panamera will arrive in dealerships). According to AutoCar, Porsche is also planning a diesel version of the new Panamera and is looking to use existing Volkswagen diesel engines.
“There are V6 and V8 diesels within the VW Group that could be used as a basis,” a Porsche official told the UK publications.
That hints at the same 240-hp 3.0L V6 diesel used in the Cayenne, which is also used by Audi and Volkswagen on the A6 and Touareg respectively.

Porsche is also said to be working on an even faster Panamera that will sit above the Turbo model. It will use the same strategy as the Cayenne GTS and will do away with the Panamera Turbo’s standard air suspension and replacing it with steel springs. Badging on the car is expected to be a Turbo S or a GTS.

Porsche to Launch High Performance Panamera GTS & Diesel Models

Porsche's Panamera lineup is poised to expand as the company is reportedly working on a new diesel variant as well as a high performance GTS.

Although little is known about the Panamera GTS, it is expected to be positioned above the Panamera Turbo. This means the GTS will likely boast more than 500 horsepower, which should enable it to beat the 4.0 second 0-60 mph time of the Panamera Turbo. The GTS is also expected to ditch the Turbo's heavy air suspension system, in favor of traditional coil springs.

According to Autocar, Porsche is also considering a diesel-powered Panamera. If such a model were to be built, it would likely adopt a modified version of the Cayenne's 240 bhp 3.0-liter V6 or the Audi A8's 322 bhp 4.2-liter V8.

Imo, this is the ugliest-Porsche-ever built! I'll never buy one of those for me, even with Carrera-Gt's V10 in it!

First Cayenne & now this... I think, Porsche is not good with 4-doors & they should only stick to 2-door performers! :jpshakehe

Logically, a Panamera GTS ought to be a hotted up naturally aspirated 2wd car with coil springs that sits below the Turbo in the model range. Who can say how it'll pan out tho'...

You can say that twice again Martin. On the other hand the engine used by the Cayenne GTS is already in Panamera S which leaves a GTS version of the Panamera with no suitable NA engine. Further more there has been some negatives words spread by journalist regarding the 400hp V8's capability in pulling the car.

I wouldn't be surprised if Porsche headed over to an Audi garage sale for a NA or even supercharged engine. But there is a new Cayenne due next year so who knows if Porsche has developed new engines.

^ Thanks Luw, you brought my attention to something. For whatever reason I assumed Porsche would use the NA V8 in Cayenne S tune and not the GTS level of 298 kW and 500 Nm for the Panamera S. Still, the latter's torque figure is ample enough and that 4.8 litre should be good for another 30-odd kilowatts, at least, with some moderate tweaking.

Being an over-square engine, Porsche can easily up the maximum revs to 7500 rpm to achieve bigger power, whilst the weight-loss gained from the ditching of the air suspension and AWD will also contribute to a meaningful gain in performance.

Could be quite an exciting model, with sporty interior touches like Alcantara-leather combo sports seats, carbon-fibre / alu trim and so on... I just hope they don't decal the flanks with something lame...

I guess the emerging markets will be the main target for the Panny, there you do not have the sportscar culture and, hence, no problematic brand issues from building trucks and large sedans with a sportscar label on them.

with that pricing ? which merging market exactly are we talking about ? in the UAE AFAIK they reduced the qouta to half because of the stupid pricing (requested by dealers).

They will have to slice the quota else where too. Although the economy might stabilise in 2010, unemployment will be a big problem for governments across Europe. Brighter days won't be seen until 2011-2013. Therefore I unlikely see Porsche satisfying the 20,000 target with prices high as that -- at least not next year. We don't live in year 2007 any longer. No one on negative equity is interested in spending 120k on a four seater trophy car.
