Looks like they are building it from the VW Phaeton platform...

STUTTGART, Germany — The fourth model in Porsche's car line, now scheduled to hit the market in 2009, will carry a hefty price tag of between $125,000 to $175,000, Inside Line has learned.

Code-named Project D1, the successor to the controversial 928 incorporates distinctive styling elements from the Cayenne SUV and the Carrera GT sports car. The roof is tall for easy entry and exit, and the rear end is high enough to swallow a set of vacation luggage.

Despite its pragmatic proportions and bigger-than-expected dimensions, the Panamera is instantly recognizable as a Porsche. Trademark cues include Carrera GT-type headlamps, large lateral front air intakes borrowed from the 911 Turbo, a wide tailgate à la Cayenne, and a four-light boomerang greenhouse to avoid that slouchy SUV/wagon look.

It blends a front/midengine layout with a choice of rear- or all-wheel drive.

The major question remaining is who will help Porsche develop and build it. Volkswagen is the likely partner. If that plan proceeds — a big if, as some at VW are balking — the joint project could spawn four different rear- and all-wheel-drive model lines — D1: Porsche Panamera, a four-door, four-seater hatchback coupe; D2: VW Phaeton replacement, a high-roof, theater-seating full-size luxury coupe-van hybrid; C1: a new five-door VW sportback to be positioned between the Passat and the Phaeton; and the E1: Bentley Arnage, Azure DHC and Continental coupe replacements. What it means to you: Porsche is riding its recent success and the reward is new products for enthusiasts. If VW chips in, we might have a handful of new Porsches on our "To-Do" lists.

It seems as if the same thing that happened to Bentley is happening to Porsche!

They get more money, and want to increase production, a bad idea in my mind because it makes the brand less 'special'!

Pretty sure they want to make money as well... i think the price tag will keep it pretty exclusive... They are still strictly an enthusiast's car. Most people wont just spend that type of money unless they know what they are buying. Price tag is well above an average buyer's affordability.

So are you saying this car is going to be more than a CLS 55, how much is one of them in America BTW?

According to the article above yes ...

"STUTTGART, Germany — The fourth model in Porsche's car line, now scheduled to hit the market in 2009, will carry a hefty price tag of between $125,000 to $175,000, Inside Line has learned. "

As for the CLS55 AMG, you can get a brand new one for $87,375. 2006 CLS55 AMG - Click Here -

So this Porsche is way expensive, it looks like S600 money or Bentley money!

I can see now that it isn't going to be a huge seller!

Probably not huge, but for someone who was getting a Bentley or even a S600, or a 760 or a A8 W12, might consider this being its close to their mark. So for the most part it still will be pretty exclusive.

is this a real picture or is it a PS ...?

Its a pic of the concept i believe, most realistic, its a computer enhanced image of the real thing. The actual pic, and sketches are as follows....

Porsche have thought about a four-door model for many years (at least 20), so this is not some impulsive reaction to the CLS - I have absolutely no doubt this car will be amazing and amazingly successful for Porsche.

Agreed, a few of my friends that have Porsche Cayenne's and such are excited to have this in production, and many are considering ordering one asap. They have familys and love Porsches and were forced to get the SUV. They all preffer cars, and this is an answer..... I think it will be pretty succesfull too.
