Concept Porsche Mission X

Future car concepts, design studies, upcoming tech, and what may come next
And yeah, a more pure manual and naturally aspirated hypercar would've been great too. Unfortunately, ESG score is all too important for these companies to make flagship cars like that.

Not that I think a few 100s of ICE only hypercar is going to materially affect the environment, but if the concern is virtue signalling, by 2027, an hybrid is not going to help you either.

I believe it has to be very different. Basically due to the fact that Porsche’s aspiration as a brand is also way different.

When this car debuts, only the 911 and Panamera will have ICE variants among the line up. So it would be weird to launch an ICE hypercar when the aim of the brand is to be fully electric.

In fact, there were prototypes of 918 successors with an ICE powertrain. This Mission X comes this late as a result of the tech not being ready until 2027.
That's a good point as well. Don't want the flagship of the brand representing "outdated" tech while they're moving to full EV. What a shame though :(

That is more than welcome, after the disaster of the latest 5 Series. Finally something exciting!

I agree with most, though, that if you remove the badges, Porsche isn't the first brand that comes to my mind.

Very interesting!🙂
He's very right that the 918 has aged INCREDIBLY well and still looks really new, interior as well as he points out in the video. The Mission X unfortunately does not move the bar enough visually as a successor to the 918, that's no fault of itself, just the 918 set an incredibly high bar to begin with.

The 918 genuinely still looks like it could be sold brand new in it's current form and still looks fresh.

Sometimes words are utterly irrelevant.

@PorscheFrance

There are those that say that words, like violence, break the silence...

... that words are very unnecessary, and that they can only do harm...

... they say that words are meaningless, and forgettable ...

[Enjoy the Silence]

I know those words very well. '89 Violator album.🙂

Yesterday, Road & Track put out an article with new insights into Mission X, with input from the technical project manager Michael Behr and Porsche CEO Oliver Blume.

https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-cu...-supercar-concept-leads-to-a-brighter-future/

Among other things, they talk about Mission X sharing the wheelbase with the other Porsche halo cars...
“With the 918, we started with 2680 millimeters in wheelbase and coincidentally changed to the same as the Carrera GT, 2730 millimeters, because we had to add some length at the rear,” Behr recalls. Now, for the Mission X, it’s a playful way to connect the concept with Porsche’s past hypercars: “I said to our design colleagues, ‘Let’s do 2730 millimeters so it’s the same.’ It’s ridiculous, but it’s also a little bit of Porsche DNA.”

...simulating the lap time...
“It was really interesting to calculate and simulate the Nürburgring,” Behr says. “We played with all of these factors: weight, grip and stiffness of the tires, downforce, drag, power. You have to find the right compromise, but after a short while, we realized the real thing is downforce. For the Nürburgring, if there’s a lot of power on the car, you have to optimize downforce. We don’t get the numbers of the 919, sure. It’s not a racing car; it’s a street-legal car, so it’s a completely different number, much better than the GT3 RS.”

That massive rear channel directing air under the wing will have a major role in sticking the Mission X to the ground. The concept also has an active front wing and an extendable rear wing.

...saving weight on areas previously restricted to such thinking...
“We talked about saving weight at the rear axle with smaller discs, smaller calipers,” Behr says. Recuperation produces a lot of braking force, and the Mission X marked the first time the team considered taking advantage of a car’s all-electric nature to cut mass by reducing brakes.

...and pros and cons of RWD vs AWD
Behr says, is that the record can be achieved using rear-wheel drive, as the concept is currently configured. “To have a very fast lap time, the front axle is not an advantage,” he says. It’s not better in handling, “just more weight, but if we would like to have two, three, or three and a half laps with really fast lap times—much better than the 918—you have to have a big electric motor on the front axle to recuperate all the energy you need. If ever an all-electric hyper–sports car will come, I think, it will get all-wheel drive.”

Also, some of these newly released photos are absolute fire wallpaper material!
