Comparison tests Porsche 918 vs McLaren P1 vs LaFerrari

Probably means the P1 can't match 918's lap time. Can the P1 handle the dips and bumps at the Ring in race mode?
Lots of race cars seem to manage.

I don't know what to make of the debate on ride height. Porsche say it's unfair because it isn't legal. McLaren say the Hot Lap mode makes the 918 times misrepresentative. But as I see, both manufacturers had an idea on how they could maximize their car's performance and they used it. And I guess if you get caught driving like that on the streets, your ride height will be the very least of your troubles anyway.

not sure what you mean exactly?

The P1 has an active suspension that lowers it to a height where it doesn't become a road legal car. It's the only car in the world to do that from what I've read.

You can tell by the way it scrapes the track in the video:

I'm no expert here, but put the P1 back in road legal height, and the 918 has a chance of beating it. Just like in Alejandro's video.

So I made a laptime-analysis based on the Vbox-data in the video.
The P1 is the slowest in most of the cornerns, but it's a monster at the straights...

Thanks for the great analysis Dede. I am amazed that in full race mode with its suspension lowered so much and rear wing extended to maximize downforce the P1 has the slowest cornering speeds. Most people would think that it would be the fastest. It just shows that how close these 3 cars are on the track in straight line, cornering speeds and braking. The most surprising car for me is the 918 as it supposedly is the heaviest and with the least power.

They must have improved the braking on the P1.

Where's the P1's 1.8g 192kph turn at 12.35 in the video in that data?

I don't understand why people continue to create such a polemic about this track mode : there is a track mode on the car, car is tested on a track so it goes track mode. Seems normal ! Nothing prevents the other car makers to implement a track mode which lowers the car... McLaren has done it to exploit the maximum of their car, let it be used on the track !

I posted the slowest speed and the maximum G of each corner.
I guess the telemetry reading is off then, in the video it reads 1.8g at 12:35 for the P1.

I guess you get strange results that way. Like in turn 17, P1 has highest g but 918 has highest speed. Maybe a single data point for each corner doesn't really cover it, an average would be better.

if you look at the accelerometer the entire lap you will see the P1 peak at 1,8G in turn 10 for a fraction of a second

FINALLY....I saw the CHOC video last night. Just great, absolutely great, very enjoyable from both an entertainment perspective and informative perspective. Couldn't help myself from grinning. Something about Tiff dropping the F-bomb, that cracked me up. Marino Franchitti's description of how each team sequestering themselves in the beginning and then finally mellowing out a bit and start to mill around the competitors' cars...that really speaks to car enthusiast passion. At least Tiff gave a proper answer to which he'd choose, the other two copped out. The (Ex)-Top Gear blokes have a tough act to follow after this video. As Monster so correctly pointed out, this NEEDS to be rewatched...it was so chock full of info.

im leading Russian group vkontaklte and made a couple of articles why 918 is the only one extreme-technological car (that is what I call "hypercar") in the World, even not speaking about clear speed, while McLaren is just highly tuned MP4, and LaFerrari - track-only supercar.

But in conclusion, clear win on track as well for 918 (as expected for me). Here are tests that I count as useful.

Anglesey (evo)
1.12.4 918 (with open-roof, Weissach?)
1.12.6 P1

1:0 918 - P1

Portimao (Chris harris & co)
1.53.57 P1 (propably more laps done + harris knows P1 better + not-legal track mode)
1.53.98 918 (Weissach?)
1.54.25 LaFerrari (worst possible track for Ferrari)

1:1

Thermal Club (Alejandro Salomon)
1.18.44 918 Weissach
1.18.46 LaFerrari
1.18.82 P1

2:1

Laguna Seca
1.29.89 918
1.30.71 P1 (even on semi-slicks, and much more laps)

3:1

Top gear test track
no results, much debats, which means 918 was faster + faster top speed

4:1

Finally, the main test worth all other: Nurburgrind Nordschleife

6.57 918
no result P1 = it LOST. I guess, it can't hold the charge the whole lap + in track-mode you can't go on curbs and loosing the time. Looking at the time of 7.04 in hand of Walter Rerhl, I guess the time of P1 is above 7.10s and under 7.20s.

5:1 (3 clear wins, 2 indirect)

Also, please note no German tests with some figures was done, but many British (where they tried P1 looks better than it is) and couple of independent American (where 918 was dominating everyting else).

+ clear win for 918 on 1.4 mile and not much loose on long races.

So...

@ Portimao 918 was WP
Ferrari is so stupid to offer only the PZC and no MPSC2 (I dislike trofeoR... sometimes rain!!)
about the Thermal Club Raceway, driver was James Sofronas
there was another comparo
Silevrstone short
1 McLaren P1 Mat Jackson 0:58.24 (TrofeoR)
2 Porsche 918 Spyder Mat Jackson 0:58.47
3 Ferrari LaFerrari Mat Jackson 0:58.58
