The only thing I’m not liking is the hood shutline. Why couldn’t they line the bumper up with this?
I actually prefer the hood shut line the way it is now, I think a straight uninterrupted horizontal line across the front of the car will look quite ugly and cheap.

Agreed, but I think @domleo is talking about the shutlines of the 997/991?

The engine of the 718 is still a boxer, which makes it rather unique (Subaru put aside)

True, however the 718 4 just sounds horrible for a car in this class. The previous Boxster/Cayman was much more desirable with the 6 in my view. Porsche neutered the car and changed the model to 718 in an epic marketing fail. So sad!

I think that they had to go in the turbo way in order to reply to the emission requirements and keeping the 6 would bring the Boxer/Cayman too close if not even in front of the 911. Otherwise the Boxer/Cayman have by far the better layout with the mid engine being in boxer cobfiguration- resulting in an exelent weight distribution and very low CoG

I actually think that Porsche did the best they could. They had to go 4 and named it 718 connecting the car to history and aligning it with nomenclature for the sports cars.

@CrunchSlaughtered and @tristatez28lt1. Have you driven both the 718 and the previous incarnation? We owned a Cayman S Boxster 6, manual tranny and it was just sweet. I test drove a 718 GTS Cayman and although faster, the sounds from the 4 ruined the emotional desirability of the car for me. I really can't stand the argument that Porsche had to "protect" the 911. How about adding a few ponies to the base Carrera? Close the gap between the base and S guise and keep the 6 in the "718". They could have iterated that engine. So then, it only comes down to mileage and emissions, ugh! This is a damn sport car! I think that would have yielded a far more desirable Boxster/Cayman. Does anyway have any sales figures for the 718, I bet they took a hit.

Sorry to have thread jacked. Back on point, I really love the look of the 992 Carrera. It really looks old-school in these photo's and I look forward to seeing it IRL.

Yes, I have driven the 718 Cayman S. I wrote about it here somewhere as I was just as disappointed as you. But my point is on the name, not how good or bad the car is. I think naming it the 718 was as good as they could have done.

So what did you think of the interior, quality of materials, fit and finish, overall exterior aesthetic compared with the 991? I really don't know what to make of your caricature and vibe comments. And what is your comment that the 992 911 variant is now a fast and comfortable GT based on? The pictures are appreciated.

Quality was pretty good with the exception of the shiny black plastic on the transmission tunnel. It collects fingerprints and scratches.

The fast and comfortable GT comment is based on the fact that the car keeps getting larger and heavier. It is wider than the 991. The wider the car, the harder it is to place on road and track. Weight affects all areas of performance while increasing HP is a one-dimensional performance increase.

The tech data seemed too familiar to me, so I made a little comparison:
