The Opel Insignia is a large family car (D-segment in Europe) developed and produced by Opel from 2008 to 2022. Taking its name from a 2003 concept car, the model line serves as the flagship model, slotted above the Astra and Corsa in size. The Insignia serves as the successor to both the Signum and Vectra model lines, replacing both vehicles under a single nameplate. The model line was offered in four-door sedan/saloon body styles, five-door liftback, and as a five-door station wagon/estate.

Opel will debut its new mid-size sedan at next year’s British Motor Show in July, a car which drops the familiar Vectra nameplate in favor of the new Insignia title. Prototypes of the car have been spotted recently by spy photographers, revealing its basic shape, but this official teaser gives us a look at the new taillight design for the new mid-sizer.
Europe should see the new Insignia in showrooms soon after July’s launch, however the US won’t get to see its version of the car, the new Saturn Aura, until 2011 at the earliest. The US models will also likely get some minor styling revisions to suit North American tastes.
The new model features a wider and taller body than the current generation Vectra/Aura and will be built on GM’s new Epsilon II platform. This means the car will retain its FWD configuration and will be available in sedan, five-door hatch, and wagon bodystyles.
The larger body will position it better against its main rivals in the US such as the Toyota Camry and new Honda Accord, both of which have grown considerably in size recently. Click here to see a possible rendering of the new car in our previous story.

Opel has released a second teaser for its upcoming Insignia flagship sedan. The first teaser showed the car’s new taillight design, while this latest image gives us a taste of the new grille and headlight design. The new Insignia replaces the current Vectra sedan and will make its official debut at July’s London Motor Show before going on sale later in the year. The car will eventually replace the Saturn Aura in the U.S. but it isn’t expected to cross the Atlantic until sometime in 2010.
The latest version will have a much more premium feel than previous generations and has grown significantly in size compared with its predecessor. The new Insignia rides on a heavily revised version of GM’s FWD Epsilon platform, aptly dubbed Epsilon II, and will be available in sedan, five-door hatch, and wagon bodystyles.
Powering the new car will be a range of four-cylinder and V6 engines including both petrol and turbodiesel units. The U.S.-spec Aura may also be available with a new V8 engine as well as a new hybrid option similar to that used in the new Chevrolet Malibu. Opel Releases New Insignia Teaser Shots Along With Details on the Headlights

Since we’re still a few months away from the Insignia’s debut that will take place at the London Motor Show on July 2, Opel decided to give us a second set of teaser shots following an initial picture of the car’s tail-lamp that was released last November. The Insignia will replace the Vectra in Europe while it’s speculated that the mid-size sedan will most possibly succeed the Saturn Aura in the U.S.
Along with the darkened front-end, GM’s German subsidiary published a few shots of the Insignia’s headlights that feature Opel’s new generation AFL technology that automatically adjusts headlamp beam distribution to the prevailing road profile and visibility conditions. The AFL headlamps, which will make their debut on the Insignia, also boast innovations such as LED daytime running lamps as standard, which require considerably less electricity, and therefore, less fuel .
