Hey eni would there be any images of the clay e65 anywhere? I'm interested in seeing how it looked and what exactly was lost in translation.
All I could find in my archives are the sketches of E65 interior & exterior.
But I remember the early clay models were very much more true to the original sketches. But than all the problems began - since design engineers & development engineers didn't do their job properly IMO - and many details on the front (kidney grille, headlight clusters, bumper / air intake) & rear (boot-lid incl rearlight strip).
Exterior sketches by Mr. Adrian van Hooydonk
The initial proposal (also first smaller clay models) offers more compact grille (less horizontally stretched) with a bit more pointed edges. Air intake was more similar to the one then seen on original E60 5er. Headlights were more angular & more fallen-P-shaped, while production version was more a fallen-B-shaped (due light projector sizes). Also the eyebrow turn signal was initially planned to be the same tech as the rear lights of Z8. But the production solution was quite dorky - since using regular bulb.
On the rear the boot lid was initially more similar to FL version - so, more refined. But developers were obsessed with golf bags & putting them into the boot. Also they tried to produce better drag coefficient therefore the boot was raised. And since it was raised they were forced to reposition the license plate holder & light strip to make the rear visually more balanced.
Btw, initially E65 the main tail light graphics was the same as seen on E63 6er, while the light strip on a boot contains fog lights & reverse lights.
So, quite some changes were made before the car went into production.
Eg. similar case happened with eg. E90 3er tail lights - but the reason why they changed it was different.
