86 [Official] Toyota GT 86

The Toyota 86 and the Subaru BRZ are 2+2 sports cars jointly developed by Toyota and Subaru, manufactured at Subaru's Gunma assembly plant. For the first-generation model, Toyota marketed the sports car as the 86 in Asia, Australia, North America (from August 2016), South Africa, and South America; as the Toyota GT86 in Europe; as the 86 and GT86 in New Zealand; as the Toyota FT86 in Brunei, Nicaragua and Jamaica and as the Scion FR-S (2012–2016) in the United States and Canada.
Toyota 86 14R60 unveiled in Japan
Features a number of styling & performance tweaks
Toyota has taken the wraps off the limited edition 86 14R60.

Inspired by the 86 Griffon concept, the 14R60 has an aggressive body kit that includes modified bumpers, revised side skirts and extended fender flares. The model also has canards, a carbon fiber roof and a rear diffuser. Other notable highlights include a rear wing, a center-mounted dual exhaust system and 18-inch forged magnesium wheels.

The sporty styling continues in the cabin as there's lightweight sport seats, carbon fiber trim and Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel. The car also has orange contrast stitching, TRD-branded sill plates and special floor mats.

Under the hood, the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine has been equipped with an optimized air intake, a high-flow air filter and an auxiliary oil cooler. Despite the changes, the engine's output is still rated at 200 PS (147 kW) and 205 Nm (151 lb-ft) of torque.

While that's a tad disappointing, the engine is connected to an upgraded six-speed manual transmission which has a lightweight fly wheel, a high-performance clutch and a quick-throw shifter.

Other notable upgrades include a strut tower brace, a trunk-mounted V-brace and an adjustable suspension with revised bushings. The car also has beefier brakes and a limited slip rear differential.

Production will reportedly be limited to 100 units and pricing starts at ¥6,300,000 ($57,830 / €45,870 / £36,065).

Toyota exec confirms a second-generation GT 8
Still several years off
The Toyota GT 86 hasn't been living up to sales expectations but the company isn't quite ready to throw in the towel.

In an interview with Motoring, Toyota Motor Europe Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing confirmed the company is "pretty serious about keeping the GT 86 pure and keeping a car like that in our lineup." Karl Schlicht went on to say the company wants to keep fun cars in their portfolio as dropping them would hurt the company's image in the long run.

When pushed for more details, Schlicht confirmed plans for a second-generation GT 86 but said the current model has to go through a "normal lifecycle" first.

it actually looks like it can produce downforce, hope it has a flat underbody

Never in the history of mankind's appreciation of all that is fine about the automobile, never, not once, ever, has so much downforce been accompanied by so little torque.

Since it sits on a modified Imprezza platform it's got to be possible.
Without mounting the engine in front of the front axle and adding 600 mm of nose ahead of the front axle - not a hope in hell. With regard to Symmetrical AWD, there is only one packaging method; the Toyobaru has the engine mounted over the (almost behind actually) front axle but going AWD will see the engine move forward of the front wheels which is completely at odds with the engineered for RWD only BRZ86.

There is only one way to couple AWD with a Boxer engine in a way that isn't preposterously complex; and both ways involve hanging an engine on the outer side of an axle. There's the Porsche way and the Subaru way...

Toyota GT86 facelift due in a year with power hike and other upgrades
Could gain 11 PS
Australian media is reporting next year's facelift for the Toyota GT86 will come with a minor power boost.

In its current configuration, the four-cylinder 2.0-liter normally aspirated engine in the GT86 develops 200 PS (147 kW), but next year's facelift is believed to come with an 11 PS (8 kW) hike in power to 211 PS (155 kW). Aside from the bump in output, the engine is expected to receive a more efficient intake manifold design which will improve fuel efficiency by 7% while frictions are expected to be reduced as well.

The report goes on to specify the 2016 Toyota GT86 will come as standard with bespoke Sachs dampers and a reinforced rear suspension subframe along with additional chassis tweaks developed by Gazoo Racing.

In terms of design, sources close to Toyota cited by Motoring are saying there will be a "major body panel redesign" but not "too radical" since the GT86 shares the same assembly line with the Subaru BRZ which will also get the same array of tweaks. Expect a makeover for the hood, front & rear bumpers, bigger lower grille along with restyled headlights.

The facelifted Toyota GT 86 will be out in April 2016 and will be sold until the end of the decade.

March 17, 2016

TORRANCE, Calif., March 17, 2016
– With its new home comes a new name and more. The former Scion FR-S will debut as the 2017 Toyota 86 at the New York International Auto Show with interior and exterior changes, as well as suspension and powertrain upgrades. The new Toyota 86 will go on sale at all Toyota dealerships this fall.

“When we announced the transition of the Scion models to Toyota we hadn’t planned on changing the names of our cars, but by popular demand, for our sports car, we decided to adopt the global name of 86,” said Toyota Division Group Vice President, Bill Fay. “Enthusiasts have a strong association with the front-engine, rear-drive heritage of the ‘hachi-roku’ and the dynamic performance it offers.”

In addition to the Toyota 86 name change, two other Scion vehicles will have new designations for 2017. The Toyota Corolla iM and Toyota Yaris iA will join Toyota’s small car line-up.

For its move to Toyota, the 86 sports car adopts more aggressive styling with a larger center intake emphasizing the low, wide stance of the car. The front of the car has a new design with re-configured LED front headlamps and turn signals, and revised bumper. The rear now sports LED tail lamps and a new bumper design. The alloy wheels feature a twisted spoke design and 86 logos have been incorporated into a badge on the front fender, as well as inside the front headlamps.

The interior also features the 86 logo on the new “Grandlux” material used on the instrument panel surround. The same material adds a new, soft feel to the door trim. Drivers also will enjoy new seating material with silver stitching and a sporty steering wheel with integrated audio controls and an 86 logo on the center hub.

Enhanced control and agile performance are achieved through revised shock tuning and a spring rate change. On the manual version of the car, additional performance comes from a gear ratio change and a torque increase to 156 lb.-ft, as well as a five-horsepower increase to 205 hp. Hill Start Assist Control (HAC) helps prevent the car from rolling back on steep hills.

The new Toyota 86 also will be featured in Formula Drift with racers Ken Gushi and Ryan Tuerck. The drivers, along with Series Champion Frederic Aasbo, will be defending the SR by Toyota race team’s 2015 Manufacturers’ Championship.

I'm dissapointed in Toyota for not doing more to keep this car desirable. This facelift is as minimal as can be. Even something small as a 10-15hp power gain would have sufficed as a carrot for keeping enthusiasts interested. It's a 5 years old performance car and the facelift gives no incentive to buy new over a used one.

I had it on a test drive for two days. Everything is lovely. Great handling, steering feel, seating position, gearbox, rwd fun and it's even nice to look at. But the engine is real disapointment. No power, no real torque, and even in higher rpm nothing happens. Really joyless engine. They should have put WRX engine in. Just my opinion, but nevertheless nice car...

A colleague of mine just added a Cosworth supercharger to his and find the car to be "perfect" with 270hp now. He's not a power junkie and neither are many who wish for a little bit more power.

I'm considering buying one but will likely buy a Renault Megane 265 Cup, which although is FWD, has an LSD but a bit more punch for confident overtaking on B-Roads and motorways.

That is the point of the 86 I think, Toyota/Subaru designed the car to provide a base for enthusiasts to modify and change it to the car they want.

I think you can take it up to 300hp HP without having to upgrade much but the exhaust. It's not a quite a Supra but nevertheless a capable and durable base car.
