Cullinan [Official] The Rolls-Royce Cullinan

The Rolls-Royce Cullinan is the brand's first all-wheel drive vehicle, named after the Cullinan Diamond, the largest gem-quality rough diamond ever discovered. The Cullinan is positioned above the Ghost and below the Phantom in Rolls-Royce's range. Production: 2018-
My personal gripe with SUVs':

Being a representative of the automotive "Old School", I perceive desirable "automobiles" or "cars" as being a.): 2 door coupes and cabriolets, regardless of whether they are 2 seater or 2+2 GT cars. Or...b.): rakish 4 door 2+2 "sedoupes", "saloupes"...Or...c.): Non-extended wheelbase, athletically elegant 3 or 2 1/2 box sedans. Or...d.) Estates based on c.) models + the odd shooting brake. Or...e.) various "Polo/Golf segment" hot hatches.

All else are...well..."trucks".

If I was stupid rich and wanted a cossetting luxury SUV to either drive or be chauffered, I'd probably get the top of the line LWB Range Rover Autobiography (I think that is what it is called). It has pretty much the same accroutements except a V12 and the styling which do cetainly provide a sense of occasion. Or get the new G63 because that thing looks to be a damn triumph. Though the new X7 and GLS both look very promising.

One thing I do wonder, and this was a topic I was going to pose in the Random Thought thread (so you can continue this discussion there if you like)....with all these hulking cars, I am sure they are contributing to a higher rate of deterioration of roads/infrastructure. Especially in areas where the underlying infrastructure is pretty antiquated, i.e. Europe, NYC, as they were not equipped to handle such mass. Would love to get a civil engineers thought on this.

I am not a civil engineer, but a few years ago a lot of 40mph speed limits were imposed on wide open main roads around where I live (i.e. few corners, great visibility, wide enough for 4 cars)... it was said the speed limits were to help the road surface last longer... and therefore save the council money.

The trucks are allowed to have 8 tones per axle, so most probably the weight of these new über SUVs is not an issue.

@Wunderkind I didn't think I was being much of a Drama Queen? I can send you photos to prove I am both relaxed, and have testicles... do you want to see relaxed testicles?

I’m not denying anyone’s right to own a SUV or any other kind of car for that matter. We have a Volvo V70 which is able to do everything a standard SUV does, often even much better. Only thing ‘missing’ would be AWD. Living in northern-west Europe you don’t need that. Unless you live in the Alpes or you are a farmer or hunter. In which latter cases I’d buy a real 4WD car.

Another personal gripe with SUV: most of them are so ugly... Range Rover and the new Touareg are the only ones that come to my mind as being good looking SUVs. (Rant modus off).
Although I didn’t like the Velar’s rear window/roofline at first, I think it is the most beautiful SUV on the market right now.

As a singular concept. Velar does stand out. But now every single Range Rover model now utilise the USP's Velar championed to illustrate its individuality. At launch it stood out. Sadly now it has become some of the background.

What is wrong in demonstrating the same NOBLE bloodline? For other producers this is a privilege and here is a drawback.

Praising Range Rover is simply a hipster move. I liked premium SUV's before they were cool...

Quite the opposite with me. I've always liked offroaders, long before 'SUVs' etc. were even born. My parents owned Defenders, G wagons, and Land Cruisers, maybe that influenced me. In contrast to you, I find many sedans and station wagons to be ill-proportioned (too long in relation to their height) and not 'muscular' enough. At least, that was the case 30 years ago :). Two other functional aspects were also quite convincing to me: ride height and 'compatibility' with family requirements. Installing a booster seat was a pain in the ass in the E32 but in the Range, it was duck soup. Of course, comfort and dynamics are yet another story.

I still remember how excited I was about the reveal of the first M class, and how disappointed I was about it turning out so far less exciting than the Vision AAV. It was the first gen X5 that really got me then.

Really sorry for the unintended 'drama queen' rating given. I don't know how the rating was given, but it sometimes happen when one uses an iPad to browse. Thanks for letting me know.

Rating undone. Sorry.

I do appreciate a well-patina'd, funky old Land Rover, Toyota Landcruiser or M-B G-Wagen. And not to forget the VW Iltis. Worn, dull paint...nicks and scratches here and there...generally a bit untidy. Bags of character.

I obviously didn’t express my opinion clear enough @Busty I don’t like SUV’s and must laugh a little when I see a mommy bringing her children to school in a car she has problems with to get in or get out and can’t park (too big/high). Real 4WD, like the one you mentioned and in addition to those a Pajero or Patrol, I never had a problem with. On the contrary.
I guess I just don’t like trends... ;)

Official config is on line, this is my spec, although I still don't completely accept it's looks.

Youch. By far the worst product Rolls has, but it will undoubtedly be their most popular.

Oh yes they will. This is the first high luxury SUV. Might not be groundbreaking in its execution. But it will be grounding enough for others to venture into this exclusive market. Bugatti anyone?

Nice detail is the glass shield separating the cabin from the trunk in rear 2-seat configuration.

@SCOTT27: That sketch illustrates well what I meant in an earlier post. Little changes to the silhouette (like the roofline here) could have made it so much better. Due to the generally tall greenhouse, headroom might not even have been compromised.

I was mucking about with the configurator, and I was trying to see what other options can be had instead of the box-grain leather in the upper portion. Unfortunately I could not find it. I am curious to see how a machine-turned aluminum trim would look there.

The profile and glasshouse in this sketch is so much better, and realistic. I wonder why they didn't go this direction.
