^ I just don't like it in pics!
But still havbe to see in person.

So, BMW's new 5-series. A cheap copy of their own G30/31. Main stream design, overloaded with plastic. 'The business saloon". The German car industry is digging their own grave. The Far-East (Korean and more or less Chinese) are better designed and have better specs. American Tesla, look what they have done in the past 5-10 years. from zero to the bench mark concerning BEV's. The German car industry is lost with their current strategy. BMW: premium brand with cheap "non premium" products. Good luck BMW.

LMAO.

Drama much?

There was a time when BMW had reworked and converted the G30 into an electric prototype with the thick side skirts (underneath belly).

In comparison to the plug-in hybrid 5er and i5 G60, and this is because both P.H.E.V. and B.E.V. models are sharing the exact same thick (fat) skirts:

I got my production number and I should be getting the car (540xi, black sapphire metallic, smoke white veganza interior, dark oak high gloss wood trim, luxury seats, B&W audio, premium package) by mid-March.

Woo hoo.
You should’ve waited for the E class. Now you are taking the inferior, in all aspects, option.

Or if he is taking an i5 then consider the EQE lol. It is more than a match for the i5 it seems in this comparison.

Nah, I certainly don't think so though I'd be interested in hearing specific reasons you see it this way.
OK, I'll start.

First let's understand that these are both superb mid-sized sports sedans, probably the best in class. They both have their pros and cons but it's a bit of a reach to suggest that one is "clearly inferior" to the other. In fact, one's ultimate decision may be more a reflection of personal preferences than anything else of a more objective nature.

Exterior design - I think the nod here goes to the M-B as it's smoother, more coherent and less jarring than the BMW. The M-B tail lights are a little weird but overall, it's a much more pleasing design.

Interior aesthetics - Again, this is largely a subjective matter but the MB is just too over-the-top with ambient lights everywhere that cheapens the look and refinement of the interior. The BMW is very attractive with tons of tech and wonderful ambient lighting that still keeps the interior looking refined and purposeful. Fit and finish on both are excellent although each has areas where there is evidence of cost cutting. MB upholstery options and color choices are far, far better than the BMW.

Interior comfort - The interior of the M-B has a rather confining appearance with a huge center console that limits footroom, especially on the passenger side. The interior of the BMW is far more open and spacious both in fact and in feel. Rear seat leg and headroom in the BMW is significantly better than the MB.

Engines and drivetrains - I can't comment about the 4 cylinder options in either vehicle as I would never buy a car in this segment with a 4 cylinder engine. The inline 6 in the BMW is literally iconic. There's probably never been a mass production 6 that's any better than the inline 6 of the BMW. MB made a very smart move in (finally) designing their own inline 6 and shelving the V6. And while it appears to be a competent engine its long term reliability is unknown as it's only been in production for a year or so. Not only is the power and smoothness of the BMW inline 6 legendary, its effeciency is insane with the engine being rated by the EPA as 28mpg overall. That's a crazy number for an engine generating a conservative 375hp powering a two ton vehicle. I doubt you'll see anything close to this from the MB inline 6. Transmissions in both vehicles are superb.

Reliability - This one's not even close. The BMW consistently has proven to be more trouble free and reliable than the MB. This is not even debatable.

The M256 has been in serial production since 2017. So over 6 years. Not quite as long as the B58 obviously, but its been on the market for more than long enough to have proven its reliability. I've not heard too many complaints regarding its reliability.

People cite this "lack of proven long-term reliability" a lot. That might have been true in 2018, but its nearly 2024.

I doubt you'll see anything close to this from the MB inline 6.

I mean the B58 in the G30 540i is EPA rated between 25-27mpg, where as the M256 in the W213 E450 is between 25-26mpg from what I've found.
So the difference doesn't appear to be that big.
The G60 540i is rated for 28mpg, but the W214 E450 hasn't been rated yet, but I assume it'll be close enough once again.

The rest is all subjective.

Not knocking your decision, but a lot of that is pure speculation if you haven't been in or driven both cars. Concerning fuel economy, you should actually look at real world testing, because is there is nothing remotely insane about those numbers. The outgoing E450 achieved 27 MPG in actual real world testing from C&D. The overall EPA rating was 30 MPG. I can't see the new one being less efficient. It's more personal preference at best from what you're describing, you just wanted the BMW. Nothing wrong with that.

There is an Auto Zeitung comparison between the 4 pot diesels on this forum. "In all aspects" is a bit optimistic. For me, if I consider the comparison which is non emotional and only based on test results, the 5er still would be my favorite.

Comparison

What people forget is that the tire choice on the test vehicles is more important than the test results. In this comparison the MB has better braking results, but is equipped with sport tires.

Over the last 20 years BMW's were/are the most efficient, compared to MB (and Aldi).
