Why does the 40d engine in 2023 with mild-hybrid tech produce more power elsewhere in the brand (335 hp, 516 lb/ft) than in the MY2024 540d xDrive? Emissions?

Yeah, I'm definitely going with the G80 Electrified for this segment. Already been reviewing very well. The G80 does have a bit of a bloated rear, but it wears it a lot better with the stronger defined/creased body lines.
Front overhang is shorter too, at 845mm compared to the 945mm of the i5
^ For this reason, I think the compromise platform excuse is the easy way out of figuring out why the 5er looks so off proportionally... even though I have used that excuse before as well. Clearly other brands like Genesis are able to work around this.

Maybe, but from what I’ve read it seems it’s drive is sub par (saying it sucks isn’t nice, so I won’t). I for one would take an i5 over a G80 anytime, because despite of it’s looks I’m quite sure it’s drive is much better.

Having driven an i4 a few times, I have no doubt BMW likely made the i5 drive really well as is.. they're still incredible chassis tuners... But G80 takes my heart, because of it's style and interior! Haven't heard much negatives too.

So having given myself some time to digest BMW's latest, I see two main problems:
The first is obviously the platform that killed this car, same as the 7.
The second is obviously Dukec. My distaste for his designs are obvious, but I'm trying to be diplomatic here.
When I see the 3/4th view from the front and so forth, I can kind of see what he and his team are for. The staggered lines and geometric surfaces one can especially see in the interior. However, It seems like he has a hard time resolving his ideas; the front, grill, lights, the side view and back.
They don't flow together. They clash in a bad way. I think you would see this near the rear lights (where the L shape happens at the side).
His overall designs are like a story that hangs. It finishes, but you feel like it didn't close very correctly.
In a way, he's like an automotive Zack Snyder. Individually you can see that he has sparks of good design, but his taste isn't developed enough to marry the many ideas together.
