A3/S3/RS3 [Official] The New Audi S3

The Audi A3 is a small family car (C-segment) manufactured by Audi AG. Production: 1996-
Nice job Audi.

I like: Lighter and more powerful than the previous version. Best interior in class.
Don't like: Quad pipes are overkill for a 2 litre 4 pot.

Time to get the S3 vs M135i (or should that be M135xi) vs A45 AMG poll going.

So this is the same engine you will find in the upcoming Golf R and Seat Cupra. Seat is going to be a really good bargain with this engine.

Without question the hottest hatch on the market. Audi have outdone Merc and BMW. It's light too and the engine is fantastic. 10/10

Without a question it will not stand a chance against M135i. But if you're talking about looks, I agree.

I'd be surprised if the S3 got any closer than the 550ix got to the S6. But the rest of the package more than makes up for any performance deficiencies.

Anyone knows the stock boost pressure?

"The large turbocharger is also a new development. It achieves a maximum boost pressure of up to 1.2 bar for even more spontaneous engine response. A high-performance intercooler integrated into the water circuit greatly reduces the temperature of the compressed air and thus increases the amount of air required for combustion."

Thanks, I didn't really read the press release yesterday. I just posted it here and went to bed :D

So, 300hp from just 1.2 bar. No overboost? It's quite a nice figure.

Just some numbers. It's an interesting comparo. Of course I'm not talking about the exterior, cause I pretty much think everybody agrees which one looks better. But engine and specswise, it will be a close one. The M135i is a little more powerful, but weights much more. It will be a very interesting match. Concidering how good the new S-models are, I think this new S3 will send the previous generation of the A3/S3/RS3 handling nightmare, to the stars.

S3 / M135i
Engine:
2.0T / 3.0i6
Hp:
300hp/380Nm - 320hp/450Nm
0-100 km/h:
5.1(5.4) / 4.9(5.1)
Consumption:
6.9-7.0 / 7.5-8.0l/100km
Weight:
1395kg / 1515kg
Power/weight radio:
212hp/tonne - 219hp/tonne

Yeah, as I wrote above, I think this car will do some magic, that the new S-models from Audi do.

Actually, only the looks is where it shines. For the rest the 'package' is inferior in pretty much every way ;)
It's a remodelled Golf after all :)

Am I missing something, or isn't the power/weight:

S3 300/1.395 = 215 hp/tonne
M135i 320/1.515 = 211 hp/tonne
?

And really on a 300 and 320 engine, you really need to look at the power vs. rpm and gearing. I would assume the auto M135i has an advantage being 8 speed, but don't know how it's shift times compare to the DSG. Manual for manual, will be interesting.

Yup, you are correct. I took that from a website, but they dont seem to get the weight of the M135i correct? Anybody knows for sure what the weight difference between these cars are. I mean S3 vs M135i vs M135xi

The version we should compare is the X-drive 135 Automatic

the 0-100 km/h figure is 4.7 sec (BMW beats Audi by 0,4 seconds)

consumption is 7.8 (13% more than Audi)

weight is 1,590 kg (195 kg or 13,9% more than Audi)

power to weight ratio is 201hp / tonne (11hp/tonne or 5,2% less than Audi)

Based on the above, I am surprised how slowly accelerating Audi is. It should accelerate to 100 km/h in around 4.6-4.7 seconds (S3 has roughly the same weight to power ratio as the old RS3) it may be down to the old transmission that Audi decided to fit to the car.

Otherwise the weight figures that we have been given are not cross comparable.

You should not forget how careful Audi have been with the 0-100 km/h times for their S-models.
Just last examples:
S6 (4.6-3.7)
S4 (4.9-4.4)
RS5 (4.6-4.2)
TT-RS (4.5-3.9)

etc etc

I think the S3 will easily clock the 100km/h sprint in around 4.7 seconds

Yes, you're missing that the weight of the S3 is the dry weight, and the weight of the M135i is the EU weight, including all fluids, 90% filled tank, a driver AND luggage.

We all need to get the exact weight difference of the S3 - M135i - M135xi.
Anybody that is 100% sure?

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
