People take heavier, messier cars to the rings just for the heck of it. They'll take this GT to, no doubt.

And as I've said. These are likely the most compliantz easy-going variants of the GT. I'm almost certain Mercedes will do what they did with the last GT and make lighter, more aggressive variants.
I am sure they will, but it doesn’t mean it will be a great track car. Look at Bentley Continental, they made a GT3 variant….

GT3 racing that has BOP to allow slow cars to compete and be competitive, like the bentley.

The AMG GT GT3 racecar is currently one of the oldest in the field and is one of the most heavily BOPPED to slow it down.

I mean fair enough. But those guys wouldn't be taking a base AMG GT round the 'Ring either. They'd probably have any one of a GT R/Black/Track or 911 GT2/3/4 RS or 765LT or something on that order of magnitude. With a big fixed wing and carbon ceramic brakes and the full works.

If you can afford the consumables for regular racing, you can probably afford the track special editions.
765 GT BS and GT2 RS is for the mega rich.

Im talking about the regular performance car guy that has an above average paying job, is well off but not wealthy.

The guys who have graduated from running renault sports and bmw M3’s in their 20’s to now having AMG GTR’s and 991 GT3/3RS in their early 30’s.

The point is, the new AMG GT is now heavier, not as wide, longer, taller, worse weight distribution and no longer front mid engined.

The 30 year olds the previous AMG GT captured are now unlikely to “upgrade” to the newer model because in all effects its a completely different car with a different purpose.

Unless they lose serious weight with the new car, give it 700hp, and some proper aero the current AMG GTR owners will be moving onto mclarens, GT3’s and ferraris.

I see your point.
We'll see what they have cooking I guess.

Oof. The M8 is quicker between the 2-tonners because it has the extra 40 horsepower.
The Porsche is quicker between the lighter cars, I imagine cause of the extra 200Nm of torque across the power band, despite the lower power.
Though I'm fairly sure all these cars are underrated in terms of power. The Porsche for sure is, with the margin by which it beat the M8 and R8.

I always was worried that when Mercedes brought out the SL63 with 430kW/585PS I thought it was going to be underpowered slightly compared to rivals and then was hoping that Mercedes would install the V8 in the GT 63 Coupe with the higher tune version of the same engine with 450kW/612PS. That would made it more than competitive against this bunch of cars, except the 911 Turbo, but now it has to be a loser amongst its rivals, not very good and so unlike of AMG.

It's getting very very positive reviews for its overall driving experience and use as a daily.

Lol, I hopefully should be getting one for a couple of days when they arrive in September.
Let us know how it goes.

But I really do wonder why Mercedes uses the detuned M177 in the GT63. Why not give it the full 612/850Nm or even the 630/900Nm that the 4-door had.

Unless of course they're planning a GT63S or GTS 63 down the line with more power.

I know they have the GT63S-E performance, but that car should be in its own category.

Or the 656hp the aston has

Very likely an emission thing, like we were discussing regarding the BMW diesel engines.

I suppose that makes sense.
Bit of a shame really.

Though given the 180° on the V8s might we'll see that GTS with extra power (and less weight too hopefully).

The engine is definitely capable of far more. They got 700+ out of the M178 (which is the same engine with less torque and a dry sump) with the flat plane crank, though I don't think they need it to achieve that kind of power.
If they put the GT Black engine in the new GT with the FWD set-up, it would be a cruise missile.

The brakes, blimey. Wasn't expecting that given how heavy it is. Must have some seriously overkill brakes.

Also, the GT launches near enough as fast as the Porsche, which is kind of nuts. Must be the torque. But it just lacks the top end power and is obviously much heavier.

Find a way to drop 300+kg Mercedes and tune up the engine and it'll fly.
