The new GT is the Porsche 928 of the 21 century.
lol, I understand why you say that, I just thought about the style for a moment and its significance

If there is something this Mercedes has (beyond the fact that it is beautiful) it is the little historical relevance that it will have in absolute terms of design, among other things.

Nope, my point was about the general idea of a hi-powered V8 2+2 GT, not the relevance of the design.

To be honest there's absolutely no reason to "choose" either one over the other. Both are beautiful. The rear aspect on the red car however to my mind is exceptional.

I'm sure as time goes on and specifications are delivered the MK2 will also excel.
Looking at those photos in particular, the new one gives the impression of being a step backwards, not only in "the view" but in the concept

But hey, the exhausts are exactly the same... lazy Mercedes :)

Excactly, that is a good analogy.
The 928 was supposed to be the successor of the 911, but as we know this is not how it went. The 928 was far too bulky and heavy, it was a comfy gran turismo car which didnt have anything in common with 911. So Porsche decided to continue with both as two different series.
Hopefully Mercedes will do the same, introduce a new model as the real AMG GT successor, and continue with this new model - but call it SL Coupe or SLC…. But sadly as we know their plans are clearly not going in this direction.

No, not saying the cars are the same, just the headlight shape is similar and perhaps a little bit too round and lacking in terms of a clear shape definition -- unlike the Z4 Concept and the previous AMG GT before them

The designers likely deliberately rounded off the angles in order to set the GT's headlights apart from the SL's which are clearly (tri)angular.

That first picture though!

Why is the GT so heavy? Is there a fundamental chassis design difference compared to say the 911 and DB12?

Somebody said it was based on the AMG SL chassis and platform which isn't light so far as I'm aware compared, perhaps to others, which would explain some of it.

As others have said four wheel drive will add quite a bit. But still it's heavy(ish). GT I guess now.
