The Smart Fortwo (stylized as "smart fortwo") is a two-seater city car manufactured and marketed by the Smart division of the Mercedes-Benz Group for model years 1998–2024, across three generations - each using a rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and a one-box design. The Smart Forfour (stylized as "smart forfour") is a city car (A-segment) marketed by Smart over two generations. The first generation was marketed in Europe from 2004 to 2006 with a front-engine configuration, sharing its platform with the Mitsubishi Colt.

We looked at the technical data for the 52KW version of the new smart fortwo and forfour and list the differences below.
The smart has 3 cylinders, manual transmission and 999cm3 in the 52KW power version. A look at the technical details of the smart fortwo coupé (C453) and the forfour (W453) show the differences.
71 hp, 91 Nm of torque at 2,850 rpms
The torque of the 71 hp smart is 91 Nm at 2,850 rpm (engine series M281 E10R, inline three cylinder petrol engine, governed speed 6500 rpm, compression ratio 10.5:1), acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 14.9 and 16.9 seconds (C453 and W453), while the top speed of both models is given as 151 km/h. The smart fortwo consumes 4.9 liters per 100 km in the urban cycle, or 3.7 liters/100 km on the highway, and in the combined cycle 4.1 liters per 100 km for the 2-seater, and for the 4-seater it is 4.8, 3.8 and 4.2 liters per 100 km (CO2 emission 93 and 97 g/km). The tank capacity is 28 liters, including 5 liter reserve, and the empty weight is 880 and 975 kg respectively, with a payload of 270 or 425 kg. The total weight comes out to 1,150 or 1,400 kg.

The final drive is 3.56:1 in the fortwo and 3.73:1 for the forfour with a transmission spread of 4.18.
The smart fortwo is slowed down with solid disc brakes at the front (259mm), and with a rear brake drum (203mm). The drag coefficient of the smart fortwo is 0.38 (drag area 2.25 m2), and the smart forfour has 0.35 (drag area 2.22 m2), the frontal area is 0.85 in the 3-door and 0.78 m2 for the five-door hatchback.

Smart ForFour Electric Drive confirmed, slated for 2016 release
ForFour Cabrio already announced
A Mercedes-Benz representative has confirmed an electric variant of the Smart ForFour will be launched.
Last month Smart announced plans to produce aForFour Cabrio and also acknowledged the company is taking into consideration a stretched ForFour designed specifically for the U.S. market. Now, Thomas Weber part of the development team at Mercedes-Benz says an electric version of the ForFour is in the works.
Likely to wear the Electric Drive badge, the zero-emissions ForTwo and ForFour will probably come out sometime around 2016 at the earliest. Until then, production of the previous-gen ForTwo Electric Drive will continue, a decision which shouldn't come as a surprise taking into account deliveries of the model began in May 2013.
Technical details about the 2016 Smart ForTwo and ForFour have not been released but we remind you the current ForTwo ED comes with a 55 kW magneto electric motor working with a 17.6 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. This hardware setup grants a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) run in 11.5 seconds and a 78 mph (125 km/h) top speed, with a maximum range of approximately 90 miles (145 km). In UK the ForTwo ED costs 12,275 GBP while in the United States it kicks off at 25,000 USD.

Someone has to be smiling at Daimler’s HQ both this month and last as the smart Ed almost took out the BMW i3 for sales during both months.
Previously, an astounding 278 fully electric smarts were sold in June.
In May, sales of the smart ED just edged out April’s result (203) with 206 units moved…which bested March’s 186 sales.
The smart EV is now technically available nationally, although there isn’t inventory yet spread out across the country to make physical sales everywhere. However if you are looking for a cabrio edition of the little smart after months of being out of stock, a recent small shipment of those has them available at select locations.
The smart ED is the first plug-in for America to be offered with a “battery rental” option, which brings the cost of the Smart ED down to $19,990, but adds a $80 month battery rental payment, as well as includes a wider (and longer) battery warranty.
