Oh absolutely true. In fact, the Phantom III (from the 1930s) had reliability problems at first which slightly damaged the image of Rolls-Royce for a while. After World War 2, Rolls-Royce became more known for luxury and less regarded for its engineering innovation. It's sad really because Henry Royce was an engineering genius ....and his technical brilliance was what made the brand famous in the first place. Many people don't appreciate that today.Maybe but from the top of my head it was only the V12 which spearheaded the RR phantom whereas MB had many novelties on the (Grand Mercedes) 770's such as sophisticated transmission, supercharged engine and vaccum assisted brakes to name a few..so it was more or less neck to neck back then whereas that is no longer the case today..
Of course, the Rolls-Royce company is still in business, it is a massive company that makes power staions and aircraft engines - as we know, BMW only owns the rights to use the name for cars.
