Phantom [Official] Rolls-Royce Phantom (VIII)

Rolls-Royce has used the Phantom name on full-sized luxury cars and limousines since 1925, making it the longest used car model nameplate in automotive history. In the 20th century, the Rolls-Royce Phantom was a very low volume, hand-built limousine, which in its first four generations was custom coachbuilt to the customer's requests, and sometimes extravagant desires. Whilst automobile manufacturing over time became more mechanised and prolific, and vehicles from other manufacturers could be built in greater numbers and at lower prices, the Phantoms remained hand-built, and production of individual cars only began once the order was placed. The use of the name "Phantom" is a long tradition of naming Rolls-Royce models after ghosts or spirits.
Anyone know how much the sales have been impacted by the release of the Cullinan?

I've posted this elsewhere, but seems relevant...

God I hate this SUV fad

I don't think it's as bad at Rolls-Royce. Like I've said before, there's actually nothing about an SUV that compromises what a Rolls-Royce is, or should be. It's not the (understandable) sell out that it is for supposed sports car brands.

I see the points made by @Matski and @Centurion both, though in my mind; if I had to compare the Phantom and the Cullinan, there is no doubt in my mind on which one is the flagship model/epitome of the Rolls-Royce experience

The way I see it, is how different from the Rolls-Royce experience is the Cullinan? It's not flagship material I'll give you that, at least not from what I've seen... but it's way closer to the Phantom than the Cayenne is to the 911, or the Urus is to the typical iconic Lamborghini experience. Same with Aston, though if they've have given the DBX some more unique styling and gone for the Lagonda name, maybe it would have been more acceptable. The Bentayga is probably middling too, depending on your view of Bentley, but that's a bigger afront to the Bentley brand because - rightly or wrongly - it's too commonly seen as a posh Q7 built in eastern Europe. We'll see what the likes of Ferrari bring, or Mclaren, but I'd bet it's not the classic Ferrari experience that people made schoolboys want to grow up and own one.

... but they're popular ... so it is what it is.

I see the points made by @Matski an...
For many buyers the Cullinan will be comfortable and luxurious enough the same way GLE owners don't lose sleep nights about not driving an S-Class even if they can afford one.

Higher seating position always gives a greater sense of safety and isolation/privacy. In countries with poor roads the Cullinan will be a no brainer over a Ghost or Phantom.

The SUV is a licence to print money for any manufacturer. The sad thing is that we will eventually see the demise of other segments as they continue to decline in the face of increasing SUV sales.

Like Great Britain you mean?!

Seriously, I know my local council is basically bankrupt but the potholes are bordering on sinkholes.

Well.... this will be an unpopular opinion, but I saw the new Phantom today, saw it stationary, from every angle, then on the move...

Yes, it's pure elegance, it moves like no other car. Totaly effortless, glides, huge presence.... BUT MY GOD IT'S SO F**KING UGLY. The front is so long and upright, but the back is too short, too pintched, with the whole back pointing down... man... It's the ultimate London taxi. And when people who driven both Rollers and the New Flying Spur, and say the Bentley is "95% the luxury for 50% the money" and it's one of the most beautiful sedans ever built... Man. I know some things are not about the looks. The RR is about being in a car with a history behind the name and the brand, it's a status symbol. It means you are so rich, that you don't care. But unlike the clientel I think the brand should care. And when your new models, especially the Cullinan get mostly reviews saying "it's amazing, but those looks" it's time to take notice. Especially in the Era of global marketplace, rich young etrepreneurs, social media celebs etc. The money is going to younger and younger people, who do care about how things look. Hope The Ghost, next gen Wraith address this.
