Phantom [Official] Rolls-Royce Phantom (VIII)

Rolls-Royce has used the Phantom name on full-sized luxury cars and limousines since 1925, making it the longest used car model nameplate in automotive history. In the 20th century, the Rolls-Royce Phantom was a very low volume, hand-built limousine, which in its first four generations was custom coachbuilt to the customer's requests, and sometimes extravagant desires. Whilst automobile manufacturing over time became more mechanised and prolific, and vehicles from other manufacturers could be built in greater numbers and at lower prices, the Phantoms remained hand-built, and production of individual cars only began once the order was placed. The use of the name "Phantom" is a long tradition of naming Rolls-Royce models after ghosts or spirits.
I think it's fantastic.

Finally a shot of the rear:

Whilst I'm not one for berating the lack of leather on the steering column.. I can't ignore the fact that the sharkfin antennae makes me think of the E65 7 Series.

Well..what can I say, it's majestic in the truest sense, I would say that it is a quintessential top end luxury saloon - a perfect combination of yesterday and tommorow..the sublime exterior, albeit similar but has been cleverly modernised and the interior is a luxury haven especially the glass gallery which is absolutely novel..a brilliant job RR:eusa_clap

The level of sophistication has definitely reached new heights in a quiet way.
The bumpers, overhangs, minimal side details, ect. I like it a lot.
For a Rolls, this is new in my book.

I would agree with that. The detailing though is stunning. I don't doubt it is the best luxury car money can buy, it outpaces the Mulsanne and nothing else even comes close. I just think they could have moved the exterior forward a little more.

I really, really like this design but I do wonder how it's going to last 14 years.

Deep down I quietly hope it won't last that length of time and we'll get a reskinned model with a different name on this platform after 8ish years.

It exhibits absolutely classic Rolls-Royce proportions, and to be honest, next to the VIII, the old model ages 20 years instantly.

I think they should have kept the upward kick in the lower character line, behind the front wheel, I think that really helps give it a purposeful gait... but other than that, the evolution of every line, curve and surface has been judged astonishingly well in my opinion. The style of the car is somewhat of a contradiction, in isolation each detail is very subtle, but together they give a very powerful look.

6.75 liter V12 with twin turbo charger,570PS(563hp)/900NM(664lb ft),0-100km/h is 5.3s.

Size 5762mm(-77mm) x 2018mm(+29mm) x 1646mm(+8mm),wheelbase 3552mm(-19mm).

The stance is less horizontal and more downward, that coupled with the new greenhouse shape and neat details offer a more fluid and less heavy silhouette, well done. Same story with the interior who is now more cohesive. As or the gallery, i think it's another proof that they are really taking personalization to unprecedented levels after their recent coach building efforts. I also love how well integrated are the new screen and the semi digital instrument cluster, some shold take note on how to properly do this. All in all, this car moves the luxury game to new unexplored heights.

Mixed feelings about the new gen:

- body appears too low, especially the front
- rounded, integrated grille lacks grandeur of foregone pediment-style grille
- rake of c-pillar for aerodynamic efficiency is too great
- greenhouse extension weakens visual strength, presence of c-pillar
- tail lamps appear to be facing outward...previous shape was more composed
- headlamps appear oversized

It's funny how many countries have abolished monarchy but yet many want to live out their fantasy of being a King/Queen by travelling in a throne for a car or stay in the top suite at the Ritz
....and yet it is so entirely 'un-royal' in so many ways. This is all pizazz.

I feel Rolls-Royce has back-tracked on its philosophy a little bit with this new car.

When The Phantom VII was launched in 2003, there was great effort made to reassure the world that Rolls-Royce was all about "tradition" with an emphasis on simplicity and "purity". Now we see how that has changed completely - whereas the Phantom VII's interior held to the "less is more" philosophy, this new Phantom VIII clearly adheres to the belief of "more, more, more"

look at these promotional images - the walnut dash is replaced by black lacquer and the "gallery" - beautifully done - but some more conservative potential buyers might find it a little gauche.

It is a clear indication of who Rolls' customers are. Rolls-Royce has designed this car to cater to the tastes and attitudes of their very wealthy (and ostentatious) customers - but this is not a car for lovers of traditional luxury. This is in every way a 21st century limousine - Rolls-Royce has redefined what a luxury car can be - and it unashamedly caters to 21st century billionaires - not 20th century aristocrats.

I would agree with that. The detailing though is stunning. I don't doubt it is the best luxury car money can buy, it outpaces the Mulsanne and nothing else even comes close. I just think they could have moved the exterior forward a little more.

I don't think the Mulsanne is even appealing to the same market necessarily.
In fact, I think the distinction between Bentley and Rolls-Royce has not been this stark for a long time.

For me, the Bentley Mulsanne is the most aristocratic large car in the world today. It feels traditionally British in every way (with the heritage of the Crewe factory behind it). This New Phantom is much more international - it is designed for Shanghai, Dubai, Miami, etc.

A simple mental image is this: The Mulsanne looks perfectly at home driving through the Scottish countryside, on gravel roads, to a very old family estate - the Rolls would be completely out-of-place.
